Once, Lisa had this conversation with one of her apprentices.
“Master, have you ever had any talk of marriage before?”
“No. I never had a partner to begin with.”
“So you never had a lover?”
“That’s right. I didn’t.”
“But you’ve fallen in love with someone before, right?”
“Never.”
“Really? Not even once?”
“Really.”
“Not even with your own master?”
“Um… Luke was your ancestor, you know.”
“I know, but I figured you might’ve felt something for him at some point.”
“Nope. None.”
To Lisa, Luke Ainsworth was the man who saved her life, the master who taught her the craft of blacksmithing, both strictly and gently, and a troublesome child. He was an irreplaceable family. She held deep affection and respect for him, but she never once thought of him as a man.
