Looking back on the continent’s long history, it was clear that most wars had been fought on land.
Men took up swords, donned armor, mounted horses, and charged across the battlefield. They darted through hails of arrows on foot and clashed blades with the enemy face to face. This was the time-honored way of war. With territories shared within a single landmass, and seafaring largely reserved for trade, close-quarters combat on land remained the dominant style of warfare even in the modern day.
Even going back to the last great war, attacks from the sea were so rare they were almost nonexistent. Most of the continent’s ports reflected this reality. Aside from the enormous water city, the Imperial Capital, nearly every port had poor defenses. They weren’t built with invasion in mind, only for the purpose of commerce.
The port town Cecily visited was no exception.
