A little earlier.

After parting ways with Cecily, Luke headed to the mayor’s office. The moment he stepped inside, he got straight to the point.

“Lend me some clothes.”

Since their builds were similar, Hugo had once lent Luke formal attire for the ball. That suit—his personal favorite—was returned in tatters, stained with blood. Naturally, he was reluctant this time.

“Old man Hannibal told me to come to you if I was in trouble,” Luke said.

“I suppose that wouldn’t be an issue. Are you in trouble?”

“I’m in serious trouble.”

His trouble? A lack of formal attire.

In the end, Housman lent him one, grumbling all the while. It was a ceremonial outfit from the Militant Nation—fine fabric, intricate embroidery in places most wouldn’t notice. A high-quality piece, but apparently the only spare in the mayor’s office.

“Make sure you return it.”

“I will compensate you, of course.”
