“I’m fine,” Ewen said, turning his head toward him. “I already know I’ll be slowing you down, so I can’t afford to start complaining over something like this. I’ll bear with it.”

The rims of his glasses gleamed in the lamp’s light. His bravado was already looking questionable.

“I get that the heat is making you lightheaded, but conserve your energy.”

“As you command!”

“Get a grip.” Luke smiled dryly.

Their silly banter, however small, did lighten the mood. The harsh environment, the encounter with his foe, the rough terrain—his spirit was drained, desperate for some kind of relief. Worse… Luke touched his right eyelid.

Lisa’s Infernal Bladecraft had worn down his soul. This situation was far from ideal. Too much stress would drain his stamina, and before long, impair his vision. His right eye was holding up for now, but in case things went south, it wouldn’t hurt
