The volcanic cave reeked of acrid fumes. But Luke caught a different scent—something burnt. The smell roused him from sleep.

He groggily scanned his surroundings.
A lamp cast a circular glow over the space. His waking mind slowly pieced things together. He had been sleeping against the wall. If he recalled correctly, he was fighting those limbs just moments ago, but his memory of the end was hazy. The fact that he was still alive meant only one thing.
We pulled through, huh?
He let out a long sigh. He had narrowly escaped death numerous times before, but that last battle was especially close.
