“I’ll ask you one more time. Give me an honest answer.”

Aria’s eyes peeked through her hair, watching her every move. Cecily was frozen, unable to look away.

“Who am I to you?”

Who are you to me?

An answer came to her immediately. But her throat froze. She hesitated, afraid her answer would hurt Aria again, and the words refused to come out.

Still, another thought clawed at her. Silence would only disappoint Aria more. And if she tried to gloss it over, Aria would see right through it. So Cecily had to say it. She had to give her answer, clearly and sincerely. An unchanging truth.

“A comrade in arms.”

It probably sounded hollow. Even so, Cecily had to say it.

“Because we made a vow.”

That day they met again. On the roof of a speeding carriage, they made a promise.

“Be my comrade in arms.”
