Chapter 228 Part 2

But you know…
As much as Bunraku was convenient when it came to cooking, she was not fit to moving fast at all, so I’ll just call her back.

Volff, Obsidian, Tigris and Ninetails were called back as well.
In their place I summoned Helix, Zangetsu, Rig and Naias, my classic on-the-move formation.
Yup.
Not to mention that Naias’s cute face was always a welcomed sight. After all, I summoned her sorely because I wanted to add some eye candy to my roster.
Hey, don’t look at me with such contempt in your eyes! You know as well as I do that we man are simple, easy to understand creatures!

While we are still on the move, let’s check the map again.
Now, what is the topography of the S4W1 map?
Looks like there are more hills than plains here.
I thought that such a difference in terrain might make it bothersome for Zangetsu to move, but thankfully those turned out to be just needless concerns.
If I had to name one disadvantage though, it would have to be that I couldn’t see very far ahead of me.

But that also shouldn’t be too big of a problem for as long as I will remain careful and vigilant.
The weather is also pretty nice today, and Helix patrols the land ahead of us from the air.

Thanks to that, we immediately noticed when he was attacked.
But even so, it was still quite unexpected.
If he was hit while he was still in the air, then that must mean there are other flying enemies nearby.

Pteranodon Lv.2
Monster Target Subjugation Active
Battle Position: Air

Now wait just a goddamn minute!
This is a straight up dinosaur!

「Gughe?!」

When it noticed us, it made a high-pitched squeal, and I won’t lie, it sounded kinda cute.

Pteranodon.
If I remember correctly, this is one of those dinosaurs that always appear in those illustrated books for children.
A real representative of the pterosaurs.
It has this uniquely long back of the head and a set of giant, bat-like wings.
Yes, everything about this bad boy screams, 「look at me! Look how big I am!」
I think it might be the same assize as the Argentavis from the N2W2 map, the one where Mammoths appeared.
Oh, but that’s bad.
Like, really bad.
Not for us, since we were relatively safe here on the ground, at least until it won’t decide to dive towards us, but Helix might be in grave danger!
The pterosaur’s method of flying was similar to that of a kite, that is, it actually glided through the air. That gives Helix the mobility advantage, but that is as long as it won’t get hit by this Pteranodon. If he actually gets hit, there’s no telling how much damage he is going to sustain!

I was racking my brain whether to order Helix to retreat or not, but that dilemma solved itself the moment the Pteranodon left Helix alone after that initial mid-air tackle.
But if its aim is not to make Helix its prey, then that must mean…
That we, the group on the ground are its target!

「Wind Cutter!」

My attack spell hit it straight between the wings.
I thought it was going to do good damage, but its HP bar did not decrease all that much.
What the hell dude?!
Is this guy actually tougher than Argentavis?!

Zangetsu’s running speed was nothing to scoff at, that much was obvious for me.
But the Pteranodon gliding through the air was undoubtedly faster.
I have selected the next spell to be executed, but is it really going to hit this guy in time?

Meanwhile, Naias also started shooting water arrows towards the Pteranodon.
All of them hit their mark.
Still, our enemy does not stop.
Helix launches blade of wind after blade of wind at its wings, as well as attacking it with his beak.
As a result, the direction of the enemy who was charging towards me slightly changed.
That bought me the precious time.

Once Helix detached itself from the Pteranodon, it dove towards us once more.
However…
The casting of another one of my spells was already finished.

「Wind Shield!」

The Pteranodon crushed into the magical shield, taking heavy damage right to its ugly mug and falling onto the ground.
Volff latches onto him at once in an attempt to break the membrane on its wings.
Still on top of Zangetsu’s back, I ran towards it.
But I missed my shot by a few centimeters.
The Pteranodon used that chance and fled back to the sky.

Fuck!
Should we try attacking again with exactly the same strategy?
I mean sure, we can try, but the Pterosaur’s increasing its altitude as it’s flying together with the updraft, and even though Helix tries to chase after it, it doesn’t look like it’s going to amount to much in the end.
Damn that fucker.
Even though it’s a monster, it is surely looking down on us here and laugh its ass off.!
The best of our previous attacks managed to deal a great deal of damage to it, but it was still only around 30% of its total HP.
It pains me to say this, but if this was a game of D&D then it rolled higher on the initiative roll and still had the advantage over us.
Is there really nothing we can do? Are we just going to let it get away from us?

No, wait.
I was watching the movements of the pterosaurs from atop Zangetsu’s back when I noticed that besides us and them other presences were also near us. Could they be more Pteranodons that aimed to launch a surprise attack at us?
Should we go for those instead?

「Cursed Shadow!」

The spell cut through one of the shapes moving along the ground. It was another Pteranodon indeed.
How about that!?
Taking the damage from my spell, the other Pteranodon tried to take flight and escape just like the other one, but its wing got bent, so it ended up crushing back onto the ground, having its HP bar reduced to less than half of its total value.
Could this be an opportunity we were waiting for?

There is no doubt that with that previous attack the Pteranodon threat has dropped significantly.
The initiative in offense and defense has been completely reversed.
But even so, the enemy still tries to go back into the sky, despite our attempts at intercepting him from doing so.
It might be nothing more than a rampaging beast now, but still, I have to at least admire its tenacity.

Naias’s spear pierces its wings time and time again.
With that, its aerial properties should have been dealt with in their entirety.
All we have to do now is to finish off the helpless enemy as it thrashes around on the ground.

「Enemy Burn!」

The Pteranodon’s left wing was now crushed with spear thrusts and burned with my spell.
So you can kiss the sky goodbye, buddy.
But still, the damn thing does not give up.
It tries to poke me and Zangetsu with its beak.
In its current state however, it would be utterly humiliating for us to actually get hit by such a weak, randomly thrown attack.
All Zangetsu had to do was to step to the side a little and that was it. Problem solved.
Since it left itself wide open with that desperate attack, Volf jumped behind its back and bitten into its neck.
Good thinking, Volff, that’s my good boy for you!
Since he moved behind it and utilized its blind spot, the Pteranodon will not reach Volff with its beak attacks no matter how hard he tries to thrash around.
Out of pure desperation, it started swinging the claws in the middle of its torn wings, but I think we already know where all of its vain efforts are going.

To the middle of fucking nowhere, that’s where!

Not to mention that I was still riding on top of Zangetsu, where none of the standard attacks would be able to reach me!
So I made Zangetsu rush towards the Pteranodon at full speed.
Out of all of my offensive spells, there is one spell in particular that can deal unspeakable damage as long as the distance between me and the enemy will be reduced as much as possible.
That’s right.
I’m going to use this!

「Pulse Laser Burst!」

The laser beam that shot forward from my cane hit the Pteranodon in the torso, right where its heart should be.
And to add to it, Zangetsu tramples all over the remains of its wings as he run over it.
And Naias continues to turn it into a swiss cheese with her spear.

Then, for the first time since the current battle started, Rig descended from Zangetsu to join the fray and munch on some delicious wings, turning himself into a jelly shield whenever a beak attack was coming towards Zangetsu’s legs.
After that, it was time for Rig’s signature move.
He attached himself to the enemy’s beak and forcefully poured himself down its throat to drown it, putting an end to our struggle.

Heh, guess who’s having dinosaur meat for dinner tonight?
