Chapter 301 Part 2

 Karkinos Lv.8
 Monster Enemy Target Active
Battle Position: Underwater, Ground Water Attribute

Did you know?
Incidentally, those at the top also know.
But two of them, huh?
We can fight two of them.
I’ve also sparred with Taylor before, so I think we can take them on.
Maybe Taylor, our own Karkinos, isn’t up to par with them in terms of level.
However, his stats have been buffed up with my spells.
I can’t hope for him to be at an overwhelming advantage, but I don’t think he’ll be at a disadvantage.
And he’s got his friends right behind him as well.

Lower ATK and Lower DEF.
After using Gravity Bullet to throw one of them off balance, I hit it with my staff.
Then I hit it again.
Over and over.

That worked out somehow, but as expected, its carapace is very strong!
Even though it had been weakened by my spells, it was still a bit of a hassle.
Well, I was already partially confident that I would win.

As for the other Karkinos, Goukame challenged it from the front, Taylor had caught it from behind, and Strand had coiled himself around it.
Helix and Couturier provide support from the air.
Although it fought hard at a 1 to 5 disadvantage, it was defeated.
I ought to pay respects for its bravery.
However, to the outside looker, this might have looked like we’ve ganged up on it, so I’m a little disappointed.

The problem is?
I wonder what can be taken from these guys’ corpses.
Out of the two Karkinos, only one had an Item.

【Material】 Giant Crab Egg Raw Material Grade C+ Rarity 4 Weight 1
Karkinos egg. It is pinball-sized and is usually cooked and eaten alone.
It is popular as a delicacy.

Hey.
Nothing but food, huh?

However, I will take what I can get.
Food items are nice.
You guys can keep dropping more of these for me.
I’m counting on you!

Next I’ll probably have some crab miso!
No doubt about it!

 Great Horseshoe Crab Lv.3
 Monster Enemy Target Active
Battle Position: Underwater, Ground Water Attribute

Is it okay to turn national protected species into monsters for a game?
I guess it’s fine.
Even so, it’s huge.
In terms of width alone, it’s larger than Taylor.
And that armor looks nasty.
Having three of them in front of us isn’t making things any less troublesome for us.

How does it attack?
They just try to ram into us.
That’s all.

But they’re pretty quick for their size.
If we fail to avoid them, we’ll be in trouble.
But we deal with them the same way we did those Karkinos.
We hit them.
Then we hit them again.
That’s what we ought to do.

We managed to kill three of them.
It’s also clear why taking care of them took more time than the Karkinos.
These guys were healing themselves during the battle.
They were easy to deal with, but this alone turned them into a hassle.
But there was still fun to be had.
What can we get from these guys?

【Material】 Crab Shell Raw Material Grade C+ Rarity 5 Weight 3
The shell of a Great Horseshoe Crab. Light and durable.
 Has self-repairing properties.

This one definitely looks like a more useful drop.
Only one out of the three of these crabs dropped this, huh?

C’mon, Mr. 【Disassembly】, can’t you put a little more effort into it?

Let’s hurry.
Run south!

I also check the surroundings with Call Monster.
I seem to be able to recognize every new monster I encounter.
Thank goodness.
The problem is?
The Argentavis, without a doubt.
I’m grateful that none of those have come to attack us yet.

However…
There’s another new monster!
Was this one trying to ambush us?

 Brawny Warasubo Lv.3
 Monster Enemy Target Active
Battle position: Underwater, Underground Water Attribute

Warasubo?
It has a weird appearance, but it’s delicious.
No, wait, that’s not what I mean.

Let me say it again.
What I’m trying to say is that that’s what it looks like.
This monster looks just like a real-world warasubo.
However, this one’s the size of a large snake.
What’s up with that?

Were we spared from its surprise attack by the fact that there was only one of them?
No, I was saved by Strand.
This guy is really slippery, and runs away from us from time to time.
Moreover, it’s in the mud.
Neither Goukame nor Taylor were able to catch it, but Strand managed to bite it and wrap himself around it, preventing it from moving.
No, are they wrapped around each other?
I can’t tell which one is constricting which!

But this is an opportunity for us.
Taylor holds down the monster’s head and Goukame holds down the torso.
And me?
All I had to do was hit it in the head.
It went down surprisingly easy after that.

Still, this one had managed to set up an ambush on us.
Helix hadn’t noticed its presence.
And my Call Monster had failed to detect it as well.

It’s like this monster exists only as a trap for players.
What’s more, it drops no items.
It’s quite the unpleasant opponent in many ways!

Let’s keep moving.
Are there any problems?
There are.
There are bigger worries.

The Argentavis.

Those are monsters I encountered on the map four grids away from this one.
Was it N2W2?
I’m concerned that their Levels might be a little high.
And for some reason, there are some Lesser Gryphons here as well.
Three of them, to be exact.

No way.
Majins?
But they don’t seem to be coming this way.
Can’t they see the traces of my Ice Field from the air?

There’s also a place that looks like an island floating in the middle of the swamp.
Let’s try extending the Ice Field and heading over there.
It’s a proper piece of land.
But it’s small.
It’s not a relay portal… Maybe just a rest area?
Although it seems possible to deploy an Instant Portal here.

Should we make a pause now?
There are some troublesome-looking monsters around here.
Let’s prioritize moving.

We hurry ahead with a combination of Ice Field and Skating.
What is the movement speed of Goukame, Taylor, and Strand?
They’re moving through the swamp faster than my skating over the ice.
Or rather, in their case, they are probably adapted to this kind of place.
Goukame also maintains the same speed while on the ground.
Not so different from Taylor’s.
That helps a lot.

So what about me?
Skating’s effect makes it possible for me to potentially move faster than Goukame and Taylor.
However, the frozen surface is not uniform.
The frozen pathway made by this Ice Field is uneven, and its width isn’t constant.
Going too fast here is too dangerous.
I could end up getting covered in mud!
So I moderate my movement speed to match Goukame and Taylor’s.

By the way, what about Strand?
He’s fast.
I feel like he’s gained an advantage over us.
However, I just want to say this.

Jumping is fine, but please do it from a distance!
You’re splattering mud all over the place!

We’ve been using every trick in the book fighting as we moved forward, but…
Have we been finally caught?
Argentavis.
There’s two of them heading our way.

 Argentavis Lv.7
 Monster Enemy Target Active
 Battle position: Mid-air

They’re really big!
It almost makes Lesser Gryphons look like a small fry.
However, I don’t think these guys’ mobility in the air is that high.
The sight of it gliding towards us exudes the dread of a true bird of prey.
A hunter.
It has the commanding presence of a predator in the sky.

However…
These ones should also be stronger than those other Argentavis I fought before.
Let’s see if that’s the case!

「Gravity Prison!」

My spell comes right after my target is thrown off balance by Helix and Couturier’s attacks.
Did it work?
There were definitely some tangible results.
The first Argentavis has crashed into the swamp.
It’s covered in mud.
It had tried to target me for an attack at a low altitude, which seems to have spelled its doom.
Strand has already started his assault.
Goukame and Taylor were also on their way.
I can leave that one to you.

The other one is coming!

「Thorn Fence!」

This time it’s a wall.
The monster plunges straight into it and actually ends up breaking through.
Its entire body gets ripped to shreds.
Its HP bar has already been reduced by 20%.

Helix, Couturier, and I give chase.
Of course, we can’t let it fly away from us.
To that end, the fastest way to do it would be to destroy its wings, but…
It’s no good.
The Argentavis is already getting a good distance from us.
The ice makes it difficult for me to keep up with it.
So it ends up flying high into the air before I can catch it.
We couldn’t break its wings.

「Branch Bind!」

Next, I try to restrain it by making the branches of nearby trees grow around it.
But it’s just to buy some time.
This is the real deal!

「Gravity Prison!」

After forcing it to fall to the ground, I start attacking it with my staff.
And so I hit it.
Again.
And again.
Now this is starting to be fun!

I keep hitting it without any sort of contest until I finally get rid of it.
I took zero damage from that fight.
Helix and Couturier haven’t faced any problems either.
Hmm?
What about the one that fell into the swamp?

It seems that it has already died in the swamp.
Goukame, Taylor, and Strand are hauling the monster’s corpse.
Just as I expected.
I had imagined that it would be easy to neutralize airborne monsters by forcing them to fall on the swamp.
The three of them are also unharmed.

What’s surprising about this is that the first time I encountered this type of monster, I thought I was going to die!
The item obtained from these two Argentavis’ corpses was 1 Magic Crystal.
That’s right.
A single one in total.
【Disassembly】 seems to be far from doing its best.

So, we’ve found a way to fight on this map, haven’t we?
It would be nice if there was a better way for us to move, but…
Looks like there’s nothing I can do about this.
Let’s keep going steady.

《【Staff】Level Up!》
《You have acquired the【Staff】weapon arte【Intelligence Attack】!》
《【Endurance Run】Level Up!》
《【Magic Effect Amplification】Level Up!》
《【Magic Range Expansion】Level Up!》

Things have continued to go well for us, but facing three Argentavis at the same time has also proven to be quite tough.
Their talons have found me several times, and I’ve taken quite a bit of damage as a result.
However, the balance from these fights is still positive.
I’ve leveled up several skills.

And I’ve also learned a new weapon arte.
Intelligence Attack, huh?
According to the explanation, its attack power is based on the user’s INT level.
Hmm.
It certainly seems useful.
However, I feel that it’s far from the effect of Boosted Power.
Besides, since this can only be used with staves, its use will be limited.

Still…
I’m still quite happy I got this new weapon arte.
Using Boosted Power comes with the steep cost of not being able to use other weapon artes or any spells for a set period of time.
Being able to increase your attack power by attacking is something to be grateful for.

By the way…
None of those three birds dropped anything at all!
What’s up with that?

What time is it?
11:30 AM.
I’ll have to think about lunch soon.
However, it seems that the area portal is still far away.
What about Lesser Gryphons?
Found them.
There’s only three of them.
We may or may not be within their detection range, but they’re still out there.
I think there’s a pretty high probability that they’ll have Majins with them.

Oh well.
Let’s take care of lunch with a Portable Food.
The center of the S1W4 map is far away.
So it’ll be a little longer before we reach the other half of the map.
At this pace, I believe we’ll be reaching the area portal by around 3 PM.
Well, this should be fine.
The hunting itself is going well.
I also tried Intelligence Attack, but it doesn’t seem to be as good as Boosted Power.
But I can use Intelligence Attack to my heart’s content here.
Let’s just think about what we’ve won here so far.
The only thing to be careful around here are the surprise attacks by those Brawny Warasubos.
Dodging their first blow is quite hard.
We’ll probably get hit by about half of them.
But they’re not so difficult to defeat.
So we can afford to get hit a little.

No, wait.
Can we really afford that?
Those things don’t even drop any items.
They’re really annoying.
