Chapter 316 Part 1

Should I change my lineup?
We seem to have returned to the prairie in terms of terrain.
Wait, there are some woods growing here and there, right?
There seems to be a small mountain as well.
Hmm…
The sun is already quite low, but since I only want to take a look around for now, this should be enough.

And there’s a herbivore crossing the road right in front of me?
Its marker is yellow, not red.
It doesn’t look strong at all.
Well, let’s just ignore it.

Well then.
What kind of monsters will we find here?
I could change my lineup now, but it’ll be night soon.
I can keep it unchanged for now.

Let’s check the surroundings using Call Monster.
It detects nothing.
That’s right!
I was already expecting this to happen…!

 Baobab Ent Lv.2
 Tree Spirit On Alert
 ??? ???

Whoa, it appeared so out of the blue!
It caught me by surprise, but this guy is different.
Again, its marker is not red.
It’s yellow.
I was scared there for a second.
No matter how you look at it, it’s bigger than Senki
It’s like an actual giant tree.

I can’t see anything resembling a face.
Even so, I feel like it’s giving us a glance.
But I ignore it.
We continue heading north.

What was that anyway?

So it’s a spirit?
Well, I guess you could definitely call it a tree spirit.
An Ent, huh?

Things are starting to look somewhat dangerous around here, aren’t they?

Let’s check my surroundings with Call Monster again.
Found some.
There are others besides the one from earlier.
But there aren’t too many of them.
Two of them as far as I could see.

Are there other monsters like that one around here?
This is definitely starting to look dangerous…

 Ogre Lv.5
 Demon Enemy Target Active
 Battle Position: Ground

There they are.
And there are 3 of them.
This is awful.

「True Fighting Spirit!」 「Bless!」 「Meditate!」 「Intelligence Attack!」

Let’s give it our all here, shall we?
I still want to be able to use spells, though.

I’ll be taking care of the one in the lead.
Senki will handle the one on the right.
My remaining Summoned Monsters will deal with the last one.
That’s right.
Had there been only two of these Ogres, we would be having a very nice chance at winning, but…
With three, the only thing we can do is try to defeat them early on.
Unlike Senki, these guys don’t have any fancy equipment.
I’m sure we’ll manage, right?
No, we have to do something about this!

I throw my Kukris even if the distance between us becomes too short.
There will be no benefit from Intelligence Attack, though.
I don’t expect to deal much damage in the first place.
What I hope is that this will create enough of an opening for a pre-emptive attack.
Here we go.
Let’s slice through them!

《【Tree Magic】Level Up!》

So, did we just manage to beat them in the end?
No, we did something about them.

As expected, having to deal with three of them at the same time is tough.
We can only have a somewhat easy fight against up to two of these guys.
No doubt about it.

Using Boosted Power would have been too risky.
After all, it prevents me from using Spells to back ourselves up.
I think being able to use Thorn Fence was a big help in this battle.

Anyway…
They dropped no items whatsoever.

《【Javelin】Level Up!》
《【Lava Magic】Level Up!》
《【Throw Object】Level Up!》
《【Mental Reinforcement】Level Up!》

Come on, Ogres!
I wonder if there are only a few of them around that could come and attack us.
No, there’s definitely a lot of them in the area.
I’ve been able to detect several readings with Call Monster.
I’d like to deploy an Instant Portal and take a break, but I can’t seem to find the opportunity to do so.

Let me have my meal in peace!

 Sprite Lv.1
 Fairy Enemy Target Active
 Battle Position: Mid-Air ???

 Shade Lv.10
 Spirit Enemy Target Active
 Battle Position: Mid-Air ???

Look here.
A troublesome bunch is coming at us, isn’t it?
One Fairy.
And five Spirits.
I just don’t like this at all.

《【Darkness Resistance】Level Up!》

In a sense, they were troublesome.
However, it only takes an instant to defeat them.
These guys are too much!
No matter what, our attacks wouldn’t connect!
They just kept on dodging over and over again.
Even Obsidian was having a hard time hitting them.

The Wind Blades Tigris unleashed served as a hint.
It turns out that the only way to hit them is with AoE offensive Spells.
Then you can attack them as soon as they drop their guard.
In fact, if you look at the results, it seems fighting this way wasn’t so inefficient.
As long as Senki’s attack hits, they will be checkmated.

The Shades seem to be impervious to damage from all sources except blades that have been imbued with magic and offensive Spells.
This was also true for the Sprite.
Attacks aren’t very effective even when they do hit, and with darkness starting to cover this area, Black Strips are a nuisance.

I wonder if these are the type of monsters we’ll find in mid-air.
Looks like they are.
It seems that this is going to take us a lot of time.

After successfully sneaking into my Instant Portal, we can finally have our meal.
Let’s recall Obsidian and bring Bunraku in so that it can prepare it for us.
I have some ingredients left over from the cooking showdown with Cerberus.
Adele and Irina gave them to me.
There’s some seafood here, so I thought I’d have it made into a stew.

In the meantime, I replaced the Summoned Monsters, repaired some equipment, and updated my jewels.
And then, I started to wonder…

There is still one slot left for a Summoned Monster.
What should I summon next?
And I have to think about my lineup for this Map as well.
If it’s only against Ogres, I don’t have to worry about it much.
If it’s only against Sprites and Shades, I don’t have to worry about it much either.
But having to account for both enemy types at the same time is what worries me.

There are probably other monsters that I haven’t seen yet out there.
And this is my first time on a Map 7 squares away from Remut.
It makes me feel a little anxious.

What about our meal?
It was delicious.
Shellfish are so good.
The stock had a nice flavor and just the right thickness.
I used my bread to soak up every last drop of it so I could savor it all.
However, with this meal, we have now run out of seafood.

Now, what should I do?
In the end, I brought back the same lineup I had.
Volff, Obsidian, Senki, Ninetails, Tigris.
I actually wanted to add Telomere here, but Tigris’ contribution against the Sprite was huge.
Also, he can team up with Volff to keep Ogres in check while also dealing damage.
So I guess he can stay with us a little longer.

After all, there’s prey right in front of us.
Ogres.
Again, it’s three of them, huh?

An ambush after dispelling the Instant Portal.
This is delicious too.

《【Spacetime Magic】Level Up!》
《【Endurance Run】Level Up!》

Still, that was a lot.
These Ogres…
Well, that’s what makes fighting them so delicious.
And these ones actually dropped some items!
It was only Magic Crystals, though.
Not great, huh?
Not great at all.
I would’ve liked something a little more valuable…

「Grraaaah!」

Once I close the Info screen, Volff suddenly barks.
A warning.
Maybe more Ogres are approaching?

 Troll Lv.6
 Demon Enemy Target Active
 Battle Position: Ground

Turns out I was wrong.
This time it’s a single monster.
In terms of size alone, it would probably even surpass an Ogre.
And this one actually has a weapon in his hand.

It’s a log.
That’s right.
It looks like a club, but it really is just a big log.

「True Fighting Spirit!」 「Bless!」 「Meditate!」 「Intelligence Attack!」

Doing this is a bit reckless considering the size difference.
Is this a desperate move on my part?
Maybe if it was just me.
But my Summoned Monsters are with me.

Senki quickly approaches the monster.
The Troll may have a big body…
But now we can actually compare them.

Senki’s head doesn’t even reach the middle of the Troll’s chest.
I feel like my attacks can probably reach the Troll’s waist area.
After all, my own head doesn’t even reach the Troll’s knees.

I can’t help but laugh at the fact that there is such a difference in size.
Is there any way for me to damage it at all?
Of course there is.
There are several places I can target for attacks even from the waist down.
I only need to hit those places.
That should be good enough.

《【Staff】Level Up!》
《Summoned Monster『Tigris』 Level Up!》
《Please add 1 point to a desired stat.》

I chose to attack its right leg.
Volff and Tigris took care of its left leg.
In particular, Tigris was going all out, like in some sort of beast mode.
I can agree with that.

Tigris DEX increased automatically upon leveling up.
Huh, that’s an odd one…
Let’s choose INT as his second stat increase.

Tigris Sturmtiger Lv8 → Lv9 (↑1)
 DEX 12 (↑1)
 AGI 26
 INT 12 (↑1)
 STR 26
 VIT 26
 SPI 11

 Skills
Bite Roar Sense Danger Night Vision Conceal Wind Attribute

I can’t help the fact that his numbers will be thrown out of order, but…
Whether or not they grow to a point where three of his stats match each other depends on luck.
There’s nothing I can do about it.

However, I should reconsider my lineup at this point.
It seems that Ninetails got a little too excited in the last battle.
His MP seems to be running low.

Is this an appropriate time to be making any decisions?
Although it may seem unassuming when it comes to dealing with Trolls, I think Obsidian’s active participation is important.
That’s right.
I can even say that it’s because of his constant attacking the Troll’s head from the air that my and Senki’s attacks were effective.

Let’s bring Telomere in.
I suppose I can keep Tigris with us.

By the way, what kind of item did the Troll leave behind?
It’s wood.
I guess I could also say that what it left behind was its club.
I have obtained oak logs several times in the past, but this is the first time I have obtained one in almost full size.
It’s pretty heavy.
Moreover, as I check with Call Monster, there seem to be quite a few of these Trolls around!

So what is the theme of this Map?
Is this a lair of large humanoid power fighters?
Come to think of it, it’s also a problem that I’m not detecting any Sprites with Call Monster.
This place is starting to feel a bit plain.

 Orion Guardian Betelgeuse Lv.4
 Heroic Spirit Enemy Target Active
 Battle Position: Ground ???

 Orion Guardian Rigel Lv.4
 Heroic Spirit Enemy Target Active
 Battle Position: Ground ???

 Orion Guardian Bellatrix Lv.2
 Heroic Spirit Enemy Target Active
 Battle Position: Ground ???

 Orion Guard Mintaka Lv.10
 Heroic Spirit Enemy Target Active
 Battle Position: Ground ???

 Orion Guard Alnilam Lv.10
 Heroic Spirit Enemy Target Active
 Battle Position: Ground ???

 Orion Guard Alnitak Lv.10
 Heroic Spirit Enemy Target Active
 Battle Position: Ground ???

More Heroic Spirits, huh?
Moreover, there are some high Levels here.
So, will this inevitably be a hard fight?

The fight itself certainly felt like an uphill battle.
Not only were their Levels high, but the cooperation between these guys was amazing!
The three lower-ranked Guards were lightly armored and attacked with small swords and hatchets.
There is no doubt that these guys showed a better fighting style than the Guardians.
It was a hard fight, but it was really fun.

But what about the Guardians?
Senki trampled over them.
He attacked them violently, as if he was trying to vent out after what he had to suffer in his previous battle with the Troll.

Telomere killed Bellatrix, who had the lowest Level among the Guardians.
That one also seemed to be the only female among these Heroic Spirits.
Since it was positioned in the rear with her bow and arrows, I left her to Obsidian and Telomere.
Yeah.
Sorry for going two versus one on you, Bellatrix.

But I myself was one versus all three Guards!
That was some good grappling practice.
These guys look like they’ll be fun no matter how many times I play against them.
I’d like to have a rematch while using a different weapon.

However…
It seems that a party of Heroic Spirits cannot be summoned using Call Monsters.
That’s just a shame.
