「Unlock!」
Did the spell succeed?
At the very least, I knew it probably did something…
I knew that because of the info screens that suddenly appeared in front of me.
《Punishment awaits for those who disturb the time of peace.》
《Sinners may proceed no further.》
《For beyond this point awaits death.》
《Or perhaps… Hope.》
《But no matter… Here you die.》
And, as expected, the stone statues began to move.
Thought so… Looked like it was time for another battle.

Oh!
Up to this point, we’ve been encountering and slaughtering these monsters… But they were always at best, Level 4. It would be our first time having to deal with a Level 7 pair.
Ah, and there were a pair of them too…
It was going to be a fight well worth fighting.
I had fought a pair of Spinks and Sphinx before while I was doing some night-time hunting.
But it would be my first time doing so on horseback.
Was there a risk to that?
Yep, of course.
But I wasn’t going in blind. I knew my chances were alright.
I was very excited to see Gengetsu’s Special Skills on display.
No, in this case, I was especially looking forward to the Spacetime Attribute attacks.
Gengetsu could use the ‘wall’ skill a lot faster and accurately than I could use a spell like Dimension Mirror.
The range of the skill was a bit short, but I wasn’t about to complain.
It wasn’t going to make that much of a difference, at least in the upcoming battle.
A Spinks and a Sphinx…
The Sphinx was the first to launch a Special Skill.
In response, I faced the Sphinx and started charging at it.
Several bands of darkness came flying at me.
Leaving all my defences to Gengetsu, I devoted myself to shooting attack spells.
「Whirlwind!」
「Enemy Burn!」
Those attack spells were enough to rob one wing off of the Sphinx, causing it to fall to the ground.
I actually wanted to keep going and drop the Sphinx into a pitfall…
But the other Spinks was quickly there to relieve the pressure.
It was almost like it intervened especially to help out its friend.
Huh…
It was definitely something to admire.
We were all still using Summon Monster teams that were prioritising mobility.
But as a result of that, our fighting strength was definitely lower than usual.
But… I was still quite confident.
We did have one ace on our team, after all.
The song of a Mermaid started echoing around me.
It was a song sung by two Mermaids, actually.
I felt power flow out from within myself.
Zangetsu started running at a higher speed too.
But suddenly, a new ally appeared in front of the two monsters we were fighting.

Spirit In Battle
Battle Position: Air Spacetime Attribute
A spirit that governs spacetime.
It was Hyodor’s trump card.
Wow…
Zoom’s figure was a floating sphere of light and dark.
The surface of the sphere was a mix of white and black.
The light and the dark were spiralling into each other, and mixing so that the sphere’s surface was always changing.
Hyodor said he had only used the Spirit twice up to this point.
What a waste!
It looked like a very useful skill.
Why didn’t Hyodor bring out this Spirit more often?
The Spirit completely blocked the attacks coming from the Spinks and Sphinx, and some of them were even reflected back.
The Spirit didn’t really do much attacking…
But its defensive capabilities definitely made up for that!
The chance to breathe that the Spirit gave me let me look at what the two monsters were shooting at me more.
Bands of darkness.
Small but fierce sandstorms.
Several bullets of fire.
Bullets of hardened dirt.
Blades of wind.
How many attributes did these guys have!?
I thought two attributes were the most that these guys could have…
But could it be that they just weren’t using attacks from the other attributes?
「I’m going to use Pitfall! Don’t panic, keep your distance and keep dealing more damage!」
`『Roger!』
In the sky, Helix and the other birds danced around the enemy.
Of course, all of them were shooting blades of wind.
There were some water needles too.
The other Summon Monsters also continued attacking aggressively.
But for some reason, the two monsters did not move.
They were looking for an opportunity to attack us while we were scrambling around on the ground.
Or maybe from their point of view, there were some terrifying monsters on our side too.
The Orthros used a fire attack to try to cover the two monsters at every opportunity.
It was a good opportunity!
I started charging at the two monsters.
The Sphinx again threw out a number of dark bands, but they were deflected by Zoom.
The Spinks had not yet noticed me coming up at all.
「Pitfall!」
I was aiming for the Sphinx, right as it was on its back foot, unable to take to the air.
The lower half of its body fell into the hole.
「Pulse Laser Burst!」
This time, I aimed at the wings of the Spinks.
The imps flying about also started focusing their attacks on the wings.
Soon enough, all the flying Summon Monsters had their eyes on the Spinks.
Ooh!
Good cooperation!
It helps.
I could have used an attack spell to take off its wing in one burst…
I have time.
「Lower DEF!」
I cast a spell at the two monsters.
I didn’t have the time to check their markers.
I kept charging in on Zangetsu’s back.
As the Sphinx was trying to crawl out of the hole, I thrust a spear into its face.
It landed not only with my own force, but also with the force of Zangetsu’s charge.
This Sphinx unintentionally removed its front legs from the edge of the hall and then fell entirely into the pitfall.
Yep.
I could leave this guy for later now.
「Seal Attribute!」
This time, I want to focus down the Spinks.
I could go for a more traditional style of fighting.
The Spinks was already down to just one wing, after all.
That was because all the imps were attacking it, even while I was focusing on the Sphinx.
Its beautiful face was full of anger.
Flames started appearing above the Spink’s head.
It seemed to grow bigger little by little.
But… I wasn’t afraid of any giant fireballs heading my way.
I had something to counter that attack, after all.
Yep, the counter to that attack was Gengetsu.
「Whirlwind!」
I stopped caring about the Spinks’s attacks.
I had attacks of my own I wanted to try.
Right as the Spinks released the flames in my direction, I saw the fire rush back at the Spinks.
In no time, the flames were starting to burn the Spinks.
Oh! Very nice!
That skill that Gengetsu had was very good.
But it wasn’t a tactic I could count on to work all the time.
Gengetsu’s MP bar was suddenly at less than 50%.
「Branch Bind!」
Ivies sprung up out of the ground and wrapped themselves around the Spink’s left front foot.
It only took a moment.
But it was definitely very nice, getting to stop its movements.
Zangetsu started to accelerate.
We were heading straight to the Spinks’s belly.
I held the Swordfish Spear in my hand, and prepared myself for a heavy impact by tucking it against my waist.
In moments, a great force came through the spear.
But that force soon subsided.
The tip of the spear easily pierced the Spinks’s belly.
「Gisheee!」
An indescribable cry echoed around me.
It was a very beautiful monster, so it was a bit of a pity to hear it make a sound like that.
Again, flames started appearing above the Spinks’s head.
But that time, it was multiple balls of fire.
I suppose it was trying to overwhelm me?
「Gaaaaaa!」
Volff growled at the Spinks.
It was beyond just the air shaking at the force. The air felt numb.
The flames floating above the Spinks disappeared.
Oh! It did that just because of the shock of getting howled at?
It was almost like it was hesitating to attack.
In any case, Volff bought me some more time for a follow-up attack.
I spotted a gap in the Spinks’s defences.
