I clink glasses with a man well past sixty, no, an old grandfather past sixty.
The place is the grand dining hall of the Kōshien Hotel, one of Japan’s top luxury hotels, newly opened.
At our table, it’s just me and the old gentleman.
He looks every bit his age for this era: a bald head, round reading glasses, deep wrinkles. But he’s a sharply dressed gentleman in a well-fitted suit.
As for me, I’m wearing a dress that’s a little too mature for a child, along with some very expensive accessories.
If this were the twenty-first century, people might call it “papa-katsu” or “compensated dating,” but since I’m only ten years old, this is nothing more than a bourgeois granddaughter’s dinner with her grandfather.
