Chapter 180 – The Villain Is Me
Spring, 1931.
This spring was full of incidents and upheaval.
For me personally, the only real change was moving up to the sixth year of elementary school, having entered a year early. But the world, and Japan along with it, had begun to shift rapidly.
For the Ootori Group, large-scale factory construction projects, and all the groundwork for them, were advancing at full speed across Japan. Partly in tandem with this, the preferential tax system and public-works spending established under the Tanaka administration had set off a nationwide boom in civil engineering.
Road construction, development of industrial zones and residential land, installation of water and sewage systems, every kind of social infrastructure imaginable. In Japan, where everything was in short supply, once you started working on one thing, you’d find there was no end to what needed building.
