Tsura slowly opened her eyes in a daze.

(This is…Where am I?)

Sitting up her mind was unclear and she felt the ground next to her and noticed something missing. Seeing that most of the sky was still black, a cold panic ran through her. Her eyes darted around and she yelled hysterically for her daughter.

“Mei! Mei! Where are you!? MEI!”

“Mama!”

Tsura’s gaze finally focused and she spotted Mei carrying something on her back. With a large thud, Mei threw it to the ground and ran over, leaping into her mother’s embrace. The two hugged one another and tears flowed naturally. Kazuki’s sudden yell interrupted the two’s sweet moment.

“Mei! Didn’t I tell you to be careful with the bodies, what’ll you do if the cores degrade faster?”

Mei smiled playfully at Kazuki and apologized.

“Sorry big bro, I’ll be more careful next time.”

Although Kazuki yelled at Mei, Tsura could tell that the atmosphere was much more relaxed.

(Bodies.)

It was only now that Tsura noticed several large bodies lying side by side. It was the Mangshi that had been killed. Tsura was thrown for a loop and had no clue what was happening anymore. The last thing she saw was a blazing fire from the forest and after it died out, a terrifying agony struck her and her mind consciousness fell away. From what she remembered, the fight was not going so well and then she was out. Now that she awoke, however, it seemed that that vicious battle was merely a distant bad dream.

Tsura separated from Mei and stared at her with absolute seriousness.

“Mei, just what in the world happened, tell me everything.”

Mei tried her best to explain but since she was only 8 and she was unconscious as well for most of it, most of what she said made little to no sense. Finally, Kazuki got annoyed and stepped in.

“So that’s how it all ended. To think even Abah wouldn’t relent.”

Tsura looked up in the air at the mostly darkened sky. The only light available was a small bright orb from Kimi hovering high up and a nearby campfire.

“Ryuta, you said you killed Abah but then why is the world still nearly pitch black?”

Kazuki waved his hand and the ring on his finger glowed momentarily with a dim purple light. A black stone tablet fell into his hand and he showed it to the two.

“Ah, that’s the Jiaqin Codex. You mean to say it’s still working, but if Abah is dead how can that be?”

“Before the old bat died she put plenty of her life force into this tablet so even with her gone, it continues to stay powered. It seems she had some type of mantra or spell she recited to activate it. Without that, I can’t turn it off the traditional way. I was going to destroy it and remove this darkness for good but first I wanted to see if Mei or Kimi could find a use for it.”

“My daughter and Kimi, why?”

“Hmm, to control darkness to such an extent that it can snuff out most any light, that would be a powerful asset if one could master it. Kimi’s main elements are equally light and dark, so she is probably the best suited for such an object. Mei is a Mangshi who will become very powerful in the future and maybe she can learn to use it. Realistically speaking though, without knowing the proper way to activate and deactivate this magic tool, the learning curve goes way up and the usability goes way down. I figure if it isn’t easy then the two should probably not even consider it. After all, once we all leave this forest, it would be incredibly inconvenient to constantly be in a shroud of darkness.”

Tsura’s ears perked up a bit.

“You said once we all leave this forest, are you including the two of us in that statement?”

“It seems to me that the bad blood between you and the rest of the villagers can no longer be settled. That’s why I’ve come to the decision to take the two of you out of here.”

Mei began to jump up and down in excitement at those words.

“Mama mama, did you hear, big bro’s taking us out of here, hurray hurray!”

Tsura’s heart quivered.

“Ryuta, please don’t joke like this. We have already been through so much. Your words, can I take them to heart?”

“As long as you follow my one condition, I will take you two away from here.”

Tsura leaned slightly closer.

“Wha…what condition.”

Kazuki stirred up the fire with a nearby stick before tossing it into the flames.

“The outside world is incredibly dangerous. Not just for regular people but for special creatures as well. As you know, even Nunully with her exceptional beauty is treated as a demon that needs to be put down. The only real difference you can tell from looking at her are her pointed ears, yet this is enough for them to despise and hate her. Not every place on the Feya continent is so prejudiced but it does run rampant and deep. As you know, I and my friends can only do so much to protect the two of you. Originally I wanted for Mei to grow stronger and come out ten years later but it’s no longer safe for her here. If Mei were to stay here in a place where everyone hates her, that could severely damage who she is while growing up. On the outside, though, it’s a different story. As long as no one knows who or what she is, she’ll be seen as a simple little girl and will be treated as such. Once more though, the danger and risk outside are high. Therefore I see only one way for this to work out.”

Kazuki paused for a moment to let his words sit for a bit before he finally stated his condition.

“For me to take the two of you out, my condition is simple. You two will do exactly as I say when I say it. I don’t care where we are or what the situation is, the two of you will follow my every word down to the letter. If you can’t do that then I will have no choice but to give up on you and abandon you to the world. This will continue until Mei has reached sufficient strength, after that you’re free. What is your answer?”

Kazuki didn’t really intend to keep them at his side for ten years. If all went well he could reforge his Mage core and regrow his strength within 2-3 years. Once that was complete, he could return to the dark continent and finish what needed to be finished. Kazuki’s goal came first. As far as Mei was concerned she would merely be a backup in case things fell through.

Tsura didn’t hesitate in her answer as she stood up and confidently answered.

“Yes. I, Tsura of the Mangshi clan, agree to your condition.”

Tsura bowed her head before she grabbed a confused looking Mei and forcibly bowed her head as well.

“Mei, repeat to Ryuta what I just said.”

Mei was still a little confused but repeated her mother’s words, word for word.”

“Yes. I, Tsura of the Mangshi clan, agree to your condition.”

Tsura panicked a bit and pinched Mei on the back of her neck causing Mei to yelp in pain.

*Ow*

“Mama, why did you pinch me?”

Tsura hurriedly pinched her once more.

“You little dummy, agree to Ryuta, you’re being disrespectful.”

Mei finally realized what her mother wanted and spoke with a pout on her face.

“I, Mei of the Mangshi clan, agree to Ryuta’s condition.”

Kazuki could already feel a headache coming on from all of this and simply went back to fiddling with the fire.

Kimi and Asuna both giggled and ran over hugging Mei and rubbing her head while praising her.

“Little Mei is just too adorable and cute.”

Kimi pat her on her head and said.

“I know, right, the way you agreed with that pout on your face was too much for me, hahaha.”

Mei didn’t really understand but enjoyed the shower of praises from the two kind big sisters.

“Ah, you two, please don’t spoil my child too much, you’ll turn her rotten.”

The three women enjoyed a laugh from that. Danny though couldn’t understand the way things were flowing. None of it made sense to him logically.

(One minute we were all enemies, the next, everyone’s smiling like things never happened. I just don’t understand women.)

Sam sat up slowly as he watched Kimi laughing and smiling, a bit of the pain in his body subsided from watching this scene. Either that or Nunully who was right beside him healing him this entire time was very effective. Sam, though, chose to believe in the first reason.

“Asuna, Shin, Mei, I have a job for you three.”

Asuna stopped laughing and got serious real quick. Shin was simply curious and walked over, while Mei tilted her head questioningly. Only after Tsura pushed her forward did she realize Kazuki wanted her to do something.

Shin crossed his arms over his chest. After he found that he could sense objects without sight, he had found even more confidence in himself, making him come off slightly full of himself.

“Yeah, Ryuta, what is it?”

Kazuki ignored Shin’s self-assured attitude and pointed into the forest.

“It’s time to hunt.”
