As soon as he saw Reya charging over at them, Muteki shouted.
“Watch out!.”
As soon as he said it he and the others quickly fled backward at their highest speed. If Reya ran into them at the same speed she had on the ground, they would be nothing more than stains falling out of the sky. Reya flapped her wings and accelerated forward but once they saw her movements, they were full of doubt at what they were witnessing.
(Can this be true. On the ground, she’s like that of a speed demon but in the sky, these movements are…slow.)
Muteki’s thoughts were his own but everyone else in the sky with him was thinking the same thing. As they watched Reya’s speed, they all found it to be drastically different from her ground movement. It was almost like night and day. Muteki lowered his flames until they were about 50% of what they were and found that he was still faster than Reya with this amount of power, though barely. Varia, Byki, and Abura all noticed this as well and they shared a knowing glance.
The fear they had only seconds ago changed into relaxed confidence. Their fleeing frames turned and faced Reya. Muteki ran through many scenarios in his head before he raised a palm up at Reya. A fireball materialized in front of his palm and he shot it forward.
*Fwoosh*
Reya saw it coming but felt no fear toward it. With a backhand, the fireball was smacked away and sent hurtling toward the ground below.
“Hmpf, how weak.”
Reya’s words were meant to sting Muteki’s ego but instead, he and the rest of his squad smiled at one another.
Muteki’s confidence fully returned and his fear fell away as though he were reborn.
“I don’t know what kind of Magic Beast you are but it seems you have no magic at all. I don’t know how that’s possible and I don’t really care but this changes everything.”
“No, this changes nothing. I’m still going to kill you, except now it’s going to take a few minutes more, that’s all.”
Muteki felt there was no more need to explain. He along with his squad members would kill Reya and then they would finish their mission properly. Muteki raised an empty hand near his shoulder and a sharp spear of metallic-like rock material formed in his hand.
“She can’t use magic and her aerial speed is half of mine. Not only that but her movements seem clumsy with those wings, probably because she’s only changed partially so watch out for another transformation. Besides that, it means we can keep our distance while firing magic at her.”
Muteki raised his spear and took aim at Reya before shouting.
“Everyone! Attack!”
Muteki threw his spear with perfect form and with a slight spin from its base, the spear tore through the air, its aim true. At the same time, Varia threw several fireballs, Abura punched out and a wall of wind followed behind Varia’s flames. Right behind his attack, Byki gathered a line of dark energy that moved like a snake and launched it as well.
Reya eyed these attacks with interest.
(The attacks are fast but because they are not all of the same element, they can’t be launched from the same direction at the same time, otherwise, their attacks may cancel each other out.)
Reya didn’t sit still and moved forward. Although her speed wasn’t half of Muteki’s he was wrong about her having clumsy movements. As the spear came flying at her face, she folded her left-wing inwards and flapped her right one at a certain angle with a bit of strength. This caused her body to start to rotate. The spear whizzed past her face and she caught the tail end of it. With the momentum already in her favor, she spun completely around and batted all of the incoming fireballs away with the spear. The spear may have been hastily made but it was sturdy and tough.
After the fireballs were sent flying in different directions came the wall of wind. Instead of fighting the wind, she used it to her advantage. Opening her wings up to their fullest extent, she gave them a hard flap and the wall of wind simply pushed her back instead of causing any actual damage. Last but not least was the snake of dark energy. As soon as it came near, Reya thrust the spear into its center and shattered it before smiling smugly.
*Shwick*
Byki gave her a twisted smile. The dark energy that was shattered didn’t dissip[ate and instead reformed behind her and slashed toward her back, aiming at her wing.
*Clinck*
The sound of metal scraping metal rang out. Reya looked behind her and saw the dark energy run out and fall away before she stared at the source of where it had come from.
“Hehe, that black stuff is strong but it ain’t nothing compared to my body. You’ll have to use something a lot harsher if you want to tear into me.”
Reya spun the spear in her hand in amusement.
“Come now, that can’t be all right. Here I’ll return this.”
Reya leveled the spear and threw it back several times faster than what Muteki had dished out. As the spear came racing toward him, he didn’t even dare try to catch it and moved out of its path. The spear zoomed past his face and the wind that followed it left a small scratch upon his cheek. The spear continued off into the distance until it could no longer be seen.
A bit of blood ran down the side of Muteki’s face. Muteki felt the blood and wiped it away. At the same time, he used his earth energy to speed up his healing. It took not even a second for him to wipe the blood away but when he did the bleeding had already stopped and the wound was healed.
He couldn’t help but admire Reya’s pure strength but what she said next triggered something inside of him.
“Come now, all of you attack me at once. Maybe then it will actually be a challenge.”
Muteki felt his heart race in his chest.
(A challenge, that’s right, this should be a challenge.)
Muteki grew excited and his eyes became hungry with battle.
Muteki’s ring flashed with purple light and an emerald green glaive landed in his hands. Its length was just over nine feet and the blade at its end curved slightly. Several inscriptions written with magic gold ran up the length of its body giving it an almost art-like nature. Green and gold body with a black blade, Muteki couldn’t quite remember the last time he had to use this weapon.
Varia and Byki’s eyes widened in shock seeing the glaive. Varia could barely contain herself as she shouted.
“No, not that blade! You know what it does to you.”
Muteki shook his head, a fire burning in his eyes.
“If this is to be a true challenge then I’ll have to go all out. Who cares if I regress a stage or two.”
Varia wanted to say more but Muteki glared at her with determination. Byki though smiled with a toothy grin.
(Yes, use that cursed magic weapon. I’ll be there for you when you weaken, hehehe.)
Reya raised a brow.
“Just because you’ve now armed yourself, don’t get cocky. A mere blade can never harm me.”
Muteki said nothing.
(We shall see, Magic Beast.)
Muteki pointed the blade’s edge toward Reya threateningly. With a bit of concentration, he willed his magic forward and activated his glaive. As soon as he did he felt a burning sensation in his chest and felt his energy being devoured by the weapon in his hands. At the same time, he could feel the strength within him growing. Every inch of his body became stronger, faster, more agile. Power was coursing through every muscle, every cell.
Without saying a word, Muteki launched himself forward.
His body became after images and his speed was comparable to Reya’s when she was on the ground. Reya was stupefied.
(How did this human’s speed increase to such an extent.)
She barely had time to think before Muteki was upon her. The blade came racing toward her neck and she threw any useless thoughts away and raised her arms to defend herself. At first, she had wanted to try and grab the blade, snatching it away from Muteki but the closer it got, the faster it seemed to be and she had to give up on taking it. Right as the blade came near her neck, she just barely put her arms up.
*BANG!*
Once more the sound of metal colliding with metal echoed out and sent vibrations into the air. Reya was thrown back nearly 100 feet but still, she felt fine.
“I told you a mere blade…”
Before she could finish what she was saying she felt a liquid running down her arm. Muteki as well spotted a purplish-black liquid flow down her arms. A large gash had torn into both of her arms. Reya reflexively backed away, creating even more space between the two. Before even a drop of her blood fell to the ground, however, it was as though time reversed as the blood went back up her arms and into her wounds. The wounds both healed at a rapid rate and sealed themselves closed in only a second or two.
Muteki and the others were a little stunned at first but they had seen many weird and odd creatures with incredible healing. One thing though, seeing that color of blood, they confirmed that Reya was actually a Magic Beast, or rather they now knew for sure, that she definitely wasn’t human.
Reya looked at her arms and gave them both a small rub, testing them out.
“That blade, what is it?”
Reya questioned. Muteki though wouldn’t bother answering. As more power was devoured from his core, Muteki flashed forward once more, tearing the air apart as he moved.
