Volume 5 Chapter 104

My name is Lilia.

I’m a canine beastman working for the Imperial Capital Defense Force in Bestia. I started working as a soldier last year, and this year I was assigned to the Imperial Capital Defense Force.

Oh yeah. Before I started working as a soldier, I attended a soldier training school for three years. Because of my good performance there, I was assigned to a prestigious department called the Imperial Capital Defense Force. The promotion happened quickly, because that’s the kind of hardworking type of person I am.

One of the tasks the Imperial Capital Defense Force has is to screen applicants for admission to the capital at checkpoints. I was entrusted with this. Before the Imperial Capital’s checkpoint, there is also a checkpoint for entering the country where most of the disruptive people who would rebel against the country are rejected.

Because of this security system, we were living rather peaceful lives.

However, about a month ago, a calamity that destroyed the peace of the Imperial Capital descended on this land.

A majin attacked this country.

The root of all evil in this world is the Evil God. There are devils working under him. Furthermore, there are majin under the devils, and the majin employ the demon race and demons to do their bidding.

It seems there are some in the demonic race that are stronger than others that don’t take orders from demons.

In short, demons are like middlemen for those who are connected to evil…, but their power is overwhelming.

The two-horned demon that suddenly appeared in this country destroyed a company of the imperial army that was training. So many beastmen were injured and died…

In fact, Sally, a feline beastman who was a classmate of mine at the soldier training school, was there. She confronted it, and her right hand and both legs were destroyed. She didn’t even know how it had happened to her.

Although she survived, she was no longer able to fight as a soldier. She was injured so badly that it was difficult for her to lead even a normal life.

When I went to visit her, her condition was stable, but when she saw me, she started to cry.

“Lilia, I …… can’t fight anymore,” she said.

Having said that, large tears fell from her eyes. For beastmen, who are a people who come from a battling lineage, it is during a fight that their souls shine the brightest. They are a race that gets delight in the act of fighting.

I could only hug her as she sobbed.

Sally has always been stronger than me. For someone like her, who hadn’t experienced anything like this before, sustaining such heavy damage must have been unbelievable.

The majin who had caused Sally’s despair was somehow repelled by the Beast King and his strongest soldiers.

However, the king also fell due to the demon’s curse. There is no stronger force in this country than the king and the king’s soldiers. This is because the strongest beastman can be the king.

Despair and fear spread through the country.

If the demons came again…

The military leaders believed that the demons would come back to attack the country. We, the soldiers, were notified to prepare for the attack.

Even though we were prepared, what could we do against the demons that even the king couldn’t defeat?

I was scared, but I couldn’t run away. I had to protect the civilian beastmen in the Imperial Capital.

Because I was a soldier.

It’s been a month, but the demons still haven’t come. It seemed like the king had inflicted a lot of damage. However, we continued to be vigilant.

Then one day.

I met him.

Since the demon attack, the country had been more vigilant, and most of the soldiers were in anti-magic formation, fortifying key locations.

To be honest, the security at the checkpoints was thin because it was not expected that the demons, who can appear anywhere using the gates of the other world, would simply enter through the gates of the Imperial Capital.

Many of the soldiers who were usually in charge of the checkpoints were taken away to guard other places, so we only had the minimum number of personnel here. So we were running the checkpoint with a total of four soldiers: the person in charge of the checkpoint, myself, and the two beastmen who were absent that day.

Well, there were not many people coming to the checkpoint in the first place because of the restrictions on entering the city in preparation for the attack of the demons. My job was to issue temporary residence permits to merchants who came to the city, and to turn away tourists.

That day, I was working with the person in charge of the checkpoint. He is a powerful man who takes his responsibility seriously, but he also treats new recruits like me with open arms and takes the initiative to do even the hardest jobs.

The person in charge of the checkpoint called me. He said that there was someone who came that wanted to take the “test”.

“Well then, come with me.”

I took a young man from the human race and a cat-like beastman who was wearing a hood over his head to the testing center where the Invincible Target had been set up.

To tell the truth, I didn’t have high expectations for these two.

The use of magic was forbidden in the trials, and I couldn’t sense much fighting spirit from the young man of the human race.

However, if he had requested to be tested, he would have to muster something up.

The person who will be tested – although it’s just a matter of destroying a fixed target – must be asked about his country of origin and name.

The young man’s name was Hurt. He said he was from a country called Glendale. What is he doing here from such a distant place?

I wonder if the beast girl with him anything had to do with it.

Hmmm, I thought I’d smelled this girl somewhere before… but I couldn’t remember where.

While I was thinking about this, Hurt suddenly made a spear of flame appear nearby. Naturally, the magic detection crystal reacted violently.

“What are you doing? I told you, no magic!,” I said.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I wanted to know what would happen if I used magic,” Hurt replied.

My caution was brushed aside lightly.

“I’ll reset the crystal ball for now, but if you use magic like that again, I’ll fail you immediately.”

That said, I reset the crystal ball.

Good grief. I wondered if he thought I wouldn’t find out.

I decided to watch him closely to keep him honest.

Hmm? I wondered if his fighting spirit was increasing.

I felt that Hurt’s fighting spirit was more powerful than that of the king.

A few seconds later, I was even more astonished. Hurt had blown away the Invincible Target. The magic detection crystal hadn’t reacted either.

“What was going on here?” I thought to myself.

I wasn’t sure what to make of this. Hurt was a thin human, and I’m sure he hadn’t used any magic.

Despite that, he had blown away an Invincible Target that was several meters in size. By the way, the target weighed several tons, too.

After that, I checked the record of the magic detection crystal again and again.

“You had to be kidding me. There were no traces of any magic ever being used…,” I mused.

What was particularly strange was that there wasn’t even a record of the use of physical enhancement magic. Here in Bestia, only physical enhancement magic was allowed to be used during the testing. Therefore, the magic detection crystal didn’t react to physical enhancement magic.

It doesn’t react, but it does keep a record of the use of physical enhancement magic.

There wasn’t a record of it though.

In other words, without using any magic at all, Hurt had blown away the Invincible Target. Did he truly not have any special talent?

There were many questions I wanted to ask, but soon afterwards, the person in charge of the checkpoint came and took them to the inner part of the Imperial Capital according to Hurt’s wishes.
