【Sam’s POV】

“Sir Lantz!”

The Gatekeeper A who was looking at Phiria with disgust because she was disguised as a Rabbitman shouted in a fluster.

In return, ‘Sir Lantz’, with a slight smile that didn’t reach his eyes, asked again.

“What’s with this commotion?”

“Ah, it was because of them!” Gatekeeper A pointed to us. “That shady man was planning to enter this city with a Demi-Human without keeping it on a leash!”

Lantz’s gaze travelled to us. Surprisingly, he also managed to remain unfazed by Phiria’s beauty, but even he had quickly turned to see me.

He stared at me for a bit, perhaps because a man wearing a mask was definitely suspicious. He then turned to that Gatekeeper again.

“And?”

“Yes?”

“I asked, is there anything else that causes you to suspect them? Except the fact that she is a Demi-Human?”

The Gatekeeper was initially at a loss for words as he didn’t understand the intention of Lantz’s question.

“……………N-no……………”

“Then follow the normal procedures.”

The Gatekeeper became flustered at this order.

“B-but sir-!”

“Hmmm.” Lantz murmured. “You seem to be no good.”

That single sentence was enough for the Gatekeeper to freeze. Desperation coloured his face as he tried to say something in his defence, but at that moment Lantz touched the sword on his waist. The action was enough for the Gatekeeper to shut up and hang his head in shame.

As silence surrounded us over this unprecedented(?) event, Lantz beckoned Gatekeeper B to come over to him.

“Take this gentleman and lady inside and complete the procedure. Let them in if nothing suspicious turns up. Also, personally escort them to the place they wish to be at.”

“Yes!”

The Gatekeeper answered enthusiastically. Lantz then turned to us.

“I would like to apologise for the Guard’s rude behaviour towards you. I’ll make sure that he never does something like that again.”

Oh? That means Lantz is in a position that allows him to directly order the Guards. Is he a noble? Or maybe someone with a high position in the army? But why was he dressed like a commoner?

“Thank you.” I decided to accept his apology. “But why did that guard behave that way?”

His face donned a troubled expression as I asked that question.

“That’s simple discrimination. A certain part of the populace believes humans- no, themselves to be the ‘Chosen Ones’. They are of the mind that any race other than humans is lower, and so they discriminate against them.”

That wasn’t just simple discrimination though. I can’t help but think that there’s more to it. But I don’t think Lantz would answer any other questions from me.

“I see. We’ll keep that in mind.”

“Please do. I’ll be taking my leave then.”

With that, he left us and entered the city through the gate. Gatekeeper B, noticing that our conversation was finally over, beckoned us to enter the station beside the gate.

“I’m really sorry for the commotion earlier.”

The Gatekeeper B who seemed to be in his early forties apologised.

“Don’t worry about it. It wasn’t your fault anyway. But is everyone like that?”

Well, might as well gather some information.

“No no!” He waved his hands in a frenzy. “Those looking down on other races actually belong to the Noble Faction.”

“Noble Faction?”

“It’s the faction formed by the nobles of Asmaria. They’ve been the ones who were recently spreading rumours that other races were inferior and all that bullshit.”

Hmm, gotta stay the fuck away from the Noble Faction then.

“I’ll remember that. So, can we enter the city?”

“Ah, do you have any identification paper with you?”

Would passport work? I looked at Phiria and she shook her head.

“I see. Then it would cost you 10 silver coins to enter the city. And even then, you’ll have to get an identity proof from one of the guilds or the church and show it to us.”

Well, fair enough, I guess. I took out 10 silver coins from the pouch that belonged to the bandits and handed them over to that guard. After counting them, he put them in his pocket and led us inside the city.

As we entered, we were met with the hustle and bustle of a city. Even though it was night, there were people moving around, shopkeepers and vendors shouting to attract customers. The paved streets were lit up by lamps, and through the corner of my eye I could make out a pair of soldiers patrolling the streets. As a bunch of children ran across us, the guard asked.

“So, where do you guys want to go?”

Well……

“The Adventurer’s Guild.”

“Alright. Follow me!”

While resisting the mouth-watering aromas of various food items lined up on stalls, we made our way towards the central part of the city.

And there it was, a large building with ‘Adventurer’s Guild’ clearly written on its boar, beside which a symbol of sword crossed over a shield was drawn. In fact, on my way here, this was the only building with four floors.

Why do they even need four floors anyway?

We wave goodbye after thanking the guard and promising that we’ll show our ID proofs as soon as we get them. But before we entered that building, I grasped Phiria’s hand and led her into a dark alley some distance from the guild.

“W-wait, where are you going, Sam? Don’t tell me, you want to do it here?!” She started blushing furiously. “I-if it’s with you…………………”

What the hell is this woman even talking about? Almost makes me feel like bringing her along was a mistake. With the way she’s acting, she might even attack me in my sleep.

No, wait, that’s not possible haha.

Probably.

“That’s not what we are doing, you horny woman! I want you to use illusions to hide those ears and change your race to ‘Human’ in your status window.”

“Eh? Then wouldn’t it be better to just transform into a human?”

“No. Just do what I tell you to.”

Or I won’t be able to enjoy the bunny ears anymore.

“If you say so……………”

She muttered sounding taken aback.

Not to mention that those guards have seen her as a Demi-Human, so it would be suspicious to change my partner suddenly. By using an illusion to hide her ears and changing her race, I can just claim that she was simply cosplaying earlier and wasn’t actually a Demi-Human. Or that’s the basic gist of it.

While I was thinking that, Phiria did what I told her to. So, she was now reduced to a silver haired luscious beauty. Hmm, now that I think about it, that also attracts unnecessary attraction. But I don’t think we can do anything about that.

Just for confirmation, I grabbed the air above her head. Even though invisible, the soft fluffy feeling in my hand confirmed that the rabbit ears were still there.

“Mmhn!”

Phiria moaned again.

Are those ears that sensitive? Wow.

“Let’s go now.”

We walked towards the guild and entered. Even though it was already night, the guild was still open. On my right was the reception area where they probably handled quests, while on the left was the tavern area and bar. The bar was currently open, and many adventurers were currently sitting on the counter and downing their ales, beers et cetera.

The moment we entered, everyone’s gaze travelled to us. Normally, they would have quickly returned to whatever they were doing after giving me a brief glance, but this time, the eyes of every single person in this guild were glued to the place behind me. They were staring at Phiria.

“H-hey look at that………………”

“How beautiful……………”

“Aaah, goddess!”

Wait, that last one was oddly specific.

I turned my gaze in that direction, but it was just an old bald geezer who looked like he had never even held hands with a girl. The glint in his eyes was enough proof that he didn’t know Phiria’s true identity.

Ignoring those harmless(?) fools, I headed towards the reception. There was a beautiful elf girl sitting there. She had blue hair and blue eyes. She was working hard to stifle a yawn when we had entered, but now her eyes were burning with admiration for Phiria.

“Welcome to the Adventurer’s Guild. How may I help you?”

She asked with a practiced smile.

“Me and my companion here wish to register as Adventurers.”

“Is this your first time registering?”

“Yes.”

“Then a processing fee of 1 silver coin per person will be charged. Please fill out these forms.”

She handed two forms to us and a quill. The fields on the form were Name, Race, Birthplace and Class.

“Excuse me, but what is this Class?”

“Class here refers to your job, that is, whether you are a healer, kunoichi, swordsman, tank et cetera.”

I see. Well, I can use any kind of weapon, but for the time being I’ll chose swordsman.

So, I put my name as Samael, race as human, birthplace as Gundia and class as swordsman. Phiria put her name as Mary and her class as Healer.

“Oh, so you are a party of a swordsman and a healer?”

The receptionist exclaimed in admiration after going through the forms to check for any inconsistencies.

“Yepp.”

“Now, this is the final step.” She said as she suddenly got serious and took out a magic globe. “This is a lie detector. It’ll glow red the moment you lie. Using this, I’ll be asking you a few questions to determine your initial rank.”

Huh?
