【Sam’s POV】

“My, how rude of me to not properly introduce myself. I’m Selica, this guild’s manager.”

Hmmmm.

Fuck.

Here goes my dream of going on a normal adventure at least once. Goddamnit! Where did I go wrong this time? It was definitely killing those bandits, even though I wasn’t the one who killed them. Maybe we could have killed them but should have not taken their belongings. Or maybe we should have gone to a different city.

No, the last one would have put a damper on my plans. Good grief. Well, enough thinking about impossible possibilities; let’s take care of the problem in front of me.

“Well, colour me surprised. Who would have thought that the pretty receptionist would be the guild master herself?”

“You’re exaggerating.” She brushed off my compliment like it was nothing. “I’m sure that you noticed it the moment we met.”

Noticed that she was the guild master from the moment we met? Wow.

“You’re clearly overestimating me.”

“But your all-seeing eyes say otherwise.”

All-seeing eyes? What does she mean by that? And before that, how can she even see my eyes clearly when I’m wearing this mask?

“What do you mean by that?”

“Oh?” She was surprised. “Have you perhaps not noticed that?”

“I’m not sure what you’re talking about.”

“Your eyes. They seem as if they can see through everything.”

Huh. Where have I heard that before? Ah, right, it was her. Fuck, I completely forgot about her. Goddamnit.

“I’m not sure what you’re feeling from my eyes, but I can confidently claim that you are wrong. There’s no way a novice adventurer like me could have those kinds of eyes.”

I don’t understand why people say that to me. It’s true that I can predict things to a certain degree, but it’s difficult to see through everything.

“Uhuh, the same novice adventurer who wiped out a band of 10 bandits, even turning them into minced-meat in the process.”

Oof. That certainly sounds OP if she words like that. But as I thought, she knew that we had killed those bandits. Was it truly because of those coins?

Or…….. were those bandits part of a greater ploy?

“That was the work of this lady.”

Anyway, I decided to clear up her misunderstanding as I pointed to Phiria who was silently listening to our conversation. Selica, on the other hand, seemed truly confused.

“Sorry?”

Did she think that Phiria is incapable of such a feat as she is a healer?

“Being a Healer doesn’t mean being unable to fight. It can also mean that that person simply likes to heal.”

#technicallythetruth

Selica started at us in stupefaction for some moments.

“So….. Ms. Mary was the one who killed those bandits?”

“Yes. I didn’t even move from my position.”

I’ll refrain from mentioning that she did so in 7 seconds. Though saying that I let a lady fight alone goes against chivalry, but chivalry was mostly related to fighting so I don’t think anyone really cares. Not to mention that the gentleman’s code of Hell states that women shall be treated as equal, and that also includes fighting.

“She killed those bandits, which usually require a party of at least three Emerald adventures, alone?”

Ahhhh, now I see the problem. Those bandits seemed pretty weak to me, but that’s because they were up against Phiria, the Goddess of Life. Normal people would have trouble handling them.

“Of course. Despite how delicate she might appear, this lady is nothing short of a monster- ouch!”

“How rude!”

Phiria retorted as she leaned in and pinched my arm. I’m sure that she wanted to pinch my cheeks, but couldn’t because of the mask.

“How can you call a beautiful delicate girl like me a monster?”

“All right all right, I’ll amend my words. Even though you are a healer, you are really strong.”

Selica still seemed dazed.

“B-but, if she’s strong enough to defeat those bandits on her own, maybe I should reevaluate your test and give you a higher rank……..”

Hmm, that’s an interesting proposition, but I feel that we would end up in trouble later on so let’s pass on that for now. After all, getting the Guild Manager’s favour so early on might attract unnecessary attention to me.

“Nah, we don’t need that right now. I don’t want to lose my precious Healer anyway.”

I mean, since Phiria killed those bandits alone, she alone would be promoted, wouldn’t she? On the other hand, Phiria’s eyes sparkled after hearing the word ‘precious’.

“If you’re worried that Ms. Mary alone would be promoted, then it’s just needless worry on your part. But I shall respect your choice.”

Hmm? She agreed more easily than I thought. Anyway, time for the next question.

“But Ms. Selica, how did you know that we were the ones who had killed the bandits.”

The smile on her face changed once again.

“It was as you predicted; I knew because of those coins. The coins on those bandits had special magic formations inscribed on them. So as soon that formation reacted to my mana, I knew that you had killed those bandits and taken the coins from them.”

Well, fair enough, I guess. Since the bandits would never give us the coins of their own volition, the only other way for us to get them would be by using force

But that raises another question.

“But why did the bandits have those special coins?”

Had the coins been somehow delivered to them to somehow track and capture them? Or was there some other reason.

On the other hand, the smile on Selica’s face vanished.

“Unfortunately, I don’t have the authority to answer that question.”

“Then who does?”

Her eyes narrowed a bit, in what seemed to be…… pleasure. It was as if we had finally reached the true heart of the matter.

“Well, that was my reason for approaching you today. There is a way for you to get the answers to all your questions; why you are being treated specially, and what connection we have with those bandits. You simply need to win in the upcoming tournament.”

The tournament? The one where the winner gets the chance to marry the third princess?

“Would you give me the answers then?”

“I wouldn’t need to. You’ll simply get to meet the one who has the authority to give you the answers you desire.”

Well well well. Now that’s interesting. I guess I have a general gist of the situation now.

“I see, so the third princess is involved. No, perhaps she’s the one controlling everything from behind the scenes?”

“Who knows?”

She smiled.

“Fair enough.” But it would leave a bad aftertaste if I leave things simply like this. “So I guess ‘Sir Lantz’ is also involved, right?”

Her eyes widened in surprise for a moment, but that moment was enough for me. And Selica also realised that.

“As I thought.” She gulped. “Your eyes really see through everything.”

“You’re exaggerating. I’m just a novice adventurer, you know?”

“Hmph. Anyway, will you participate in the tournament?”

“I’m not sure. I still need some time to think about it.”

Not to mention that I have other methods of getting the information I want. For example: force.

“The tournament would start in a month, so you’d better make up your mind by then.”

“Yeah, I will.”

With that, she left us alone.
