Rubania, a village at the outskirts of the Kartne Plains.

“Whew, that was refreshing.”

Robius let out a content sigh as he pulled up his pants and fastened his belt. He donned his chainmail, then his armour. After fastening the sword around his waist, he finally put on his helmet.

He turned around and prepared to exit this dark room, when something caught his ankle.

“P-please…….. spare my d-daughter…..”

Came the hoarse voice from the naked woman lying at his feet-

Correction. From the naked demon lying at his feet.

“Aaah?” His eyes twitched and he took out his sword. “Being able to satisfy this Great Lord Robius’ desires should be worth the life of your entire generation, and yet you have the impudence to demand more? Such insolence!”

Taking the sword in a reverse grip, he thrust it into the hand clutching his feet.

“Gaaahhh!”

The demon screamed, but Robius held her hand at its place by his sword and twisted it around, enjoying her pained shrieks. No matter how he looked at it, this demon was one the highest quality materials he had ever encountered. Her pain filled shrieks were comparable to the finest opera; perhaps that was the reason why he had worked extra hard to impart every kind of wound onto her body as he had his way with it.

“What are you doing?”

As he was relishing in her ‘song’, the door behind him abruptly opened and a man entered. Robius turned around, ready to lash at the man who had dared to interrupt him, but quickly shut his mouth when he saw the face of the intruder.

“A-ah, I-I was just preparing to leave, your Grace.”

Robius instantly stood up and saluted.

“Then do so.” Then that man looked behind him. “As I thought, it was a mistake to let you do her first. You went too far this time, Robius.”

“P-please do not worry.” Robius gulped. “I’ll heal her right away.”

“Then do so and come outside. We are starting a new game.”

Robius’ fear was swiftly replaced by glee as heard about the start of the new game. The man who had entered left, and Robius turned to the demon.

“Be glad that His Grace has such a magnanimous heart.” He took back his sword and cast his healing magic spell. “If it was me, then I would have skinned you, rubbed salt all over your body and hung you into the middle of Sia.”

After making sure that the demon was healed, Robius Mantony, adjutant of the Elite Battalion, left the room after locking it and came down to the large hall. Eyeing the chandelier hanging above which he was sure would fetch a good price at the black market, he left the mansion through the broken gate and proceeded towards the town square.

Avoiding the corpses strewn about in the streets, he finally reached the square, in the middle of which the soldiers of the battalion were standing in a circle, loud laughs and cheers arising from them.

Weaving through the soldiers, he finally reached at the very front of the crowd, only to see a lone demon girl, stripped naked and standing in the middle of the circle of soldiers.

That demon which seemed to be around 7 years old was the sole heir of the Incul family. The daughter of the demon he had just left in the mansion, she was the only survivor besides her mother.

“Now, go ahead, run.”

Ah, found him. Robius thought as he saw the Major of the Elite Battalion and the heir of the Montchat family, Aluis Montchat.

Aluis was the one who had given that little demon the offer of running away.

“R-really….?”

The demon stopped crying and looked up at the face of Aluis, who, with the same warm smile that had captivated the hearts of many women, replied.

“Really.”

The demon nodded, and looked around her to find an opening to slip out of the circle of soldiers.

“Here, here!”

One of the soldiers waved his hands and called her. That demon’s expression brightened and she trotted over to that soldier. The soldier picked her up, and with a bright smile, threw her back inside the ring.

“A-ah!” Tears gathered at the edge of her eyes after she hit the ground. “Waaaaahh!” And she started bawling.

“What happened?”

Aluis strode to her, squatted and asked.

“H-h-he threw me.”

That demon said while pointing to the soldier who had thrown her.

Hmph, truly a demon. Robius cursed. Her mother has become our plaything, and all she cares about is to get out of here.

Robius was neglecting the fact that the girl was only 7 years’ old, and was led to believe that her mother and father had already escaped, but there was no one here who would bother to correct him.

“Don’t worry.” Aluis flashed a smile. “Try again.”

The demon, after wiping her tears, nodded and stood up. She looked around again, and this time, a different soldier waved to her. The demon hesitated, apprehensive because she had already been betrayed once. She looked behind her, at Aluis, who nodded in return.

Taking that as the cue, that demon slowly walked towards that soldier. Just like the one from before, that soldier took her up and held her in his arms. He stroked her small pointy horns, nodded with a smile, and then hurled her inside again.

The demon landed on her head and rolled a bit, and started crying again.

Aluis marched towards her and with a smile, said.

“Try again.”

“I don’t wanna!” But that demon resisted between her cries. “They just throw me!”

“Try again.”

Aluis repeated, this time strongly.

“No!”

The demon rejected his word with a shout and started waving her limbs around while lying on the ground.

“I said TRY AGAIN!”

Aluis’ shout shook everyone around them, so much so that Robius felt a chill go down his spine. Aluis was pissed at the demon for ruining his fun.

The demon stopped crying for a moment, and as if she finally understood the gravity of the situation she was, her expression contorted into dread.

Taking that as the cue, Aluis gently smiled again.

“Now, little demon. Try again.”

She stiffly nodded as tears streamed down her eyes. She stood up with wobbly legs and looked around again, and another soldier waved to her. Resolving herself for the worst, she walked towards that soldier.

The soldier picked her up with a smile, wiped her tears and then hugged her, patting her back to calm her down. But before she could feel at ease, the soldier, after locking eyes with her for a moment and giving her a wide disgusting grin, threw her again.

As she hit the ground, the soldiers around cackled in laughter. Robius was among the loudest of them, and while laughing he looked to the sky only to notice that dark clouds were still hanging over them.

But they had been there since this morning, so he paid them no mind and then looked back to where the demon was.

Aluis walked towards the demon and repeated his words.

“Try again.”

The demon burst into tears.

“I-I’m sowwy- hick– pleeze let me gooo…..”

“Try, again.”

Aluis repeated with a cold smile.

“Mother….. father…..”

While bawling, the demon cried out for her parents, but of course, her wish wasn’t going to be granted. The heavens had smiled on the Elite Battalion today, and so they had managed to wipe out every filthy demon from this village. That demon’s father was the most troublesome foe, but his corpse was lying in the hall of the mansion where the demon’s mother was locked.

At the demon’s words, Aluis’ eyes twitched.

Ah, he’s pissed. Robius smiled wryly.

Aluis decided that instead of using words, he’ll give the girl a physical demonstration. He slowly raised his hand so that the demon could understand what was coming for her, which that demon did. With a smirk, Aluis brought down his hand.

Just then, a red pillar of light fell down from the skies, right between Aluis and that girl.

“Wha?!”

Something crashed, and Aluis was blown back due the impact.

“Good grief.” A deep solemnly voice caught Robius off guard. “That Solomon really is a slave driver.”

He did not know why he could hear that voice despite the commotion happening around him, but it seemed he wasn’t the only one. The pillar of light quickly vanished, and from it appeared a young man.

Tall and handsome, with black hair and black eyes. He looked at those around him, and then sighed again.

“I don’t like this job.” Then he smirked. “But at least I’m paid to despise it.”

From the pocket of his white shirt, he took out a small white and golden box. He shook it once, and a small pipe-like object appeared from it. That man took that pipe and held it between his lips and put the box back in his pocket. He then snapped his fingers below the end of the pipe outside his mouth, and a small flame lit on his fingers which then lighted the pipe too.

It seemed that the pipe was made of paper and there was something wrapped inside it, which Robius instantly understood was tobacco. The man took a deep breath, and when he exhaled smoke came out of his mouth.

He then looked back, as if just noticing the presence behind him.

“Hmm, a child?” He took another puff. “Why are you crying, brat? And why are you naked?”

The man snapped his fingers again and a black cloth appeared out of nowhere and fell on the demon. He squatted down, wiped her tears and asked.

“What happened? Here, take this if you like.” The man tried to offer the pipe in his mouth, but then stopped. “Ah, right. Minors can’t smoke.”

Meanwhile, Aluis stood at some distance and silently watched the man and the demon. He did not know where he came from, but the fact that he fell from the sky could not mean anything good. So, while keeping his guard up, he signalled the soldiers around him to get in formation.

“Who are you?” Aluis started. “And what are you doing here? Do you know the meaning of disrupting our work?”

The man stood up again and turned to Aluis.

“It is to my understanding that you guys came here to annihilate this village, which you unfortunately succeeded at.” He then looked down at the demon. “Was he the one who made you cry?” The demon nodded, and the man turned back to Aluis. “And you were also trying to traumatize this poor girl. Am I correct?”

“‘Girl’?” Aluis scoffed. “That abomination there is a demon which does not deserve to live. Really, all I have done is pass judgement in the name of our God.”

“A psychopath?” The man sighed. “The God you are talking about, is he Meteron?”

“Who else is fit to be called a God than Lord Meteron?”

The man chuckled.

“Fair enough.” He shrugged. “Now.”

The man looked around again, and abruptly his eyes met with Robius’. As the latter gulped while his instincts screamed at him to run away, that man averted his eyes with a sneer and looked back at Aluis.

“Now, in accordance with the- You know what? Fuck that shit. My heroic lines won’t matter if there are no survivors.”

A chill, as if an ice blade had impaled his heart, froze Robius’ body when he heard those words. Alas, the others did not possess his disaster management skills.

“Heh.” Aluis sneered while the other soldiers laughed. “No survivors? True, your words wouldn’t matter if you are dead.”

The man shook his head as if he had given up on something, and looked down at the demon.

“Brat, close your eyes.” The demon blinked. “Hurry up, I don’t have all day.”

“A-ah… yes.”

The demon complied and closed her eyes.

“Are you ready for your death?”

Aluis brandished his sword which had a pale blue blade. The treasure of the Montchat family, it was counted in the strongest swords ever created.

“Are you sure you should be saying that?”

Robius could not even blink because his mind failed to register the absurdity in front of his eyes.

“Eh?” Aluis groaned and looked down, at his chest, only to find a gaping hole from where blood was spurting out. “Y-you….”

That was all he could mutter as he fell down on his back, never to arise again. His heart, which was in the man’s hand, was crushed by him and thrown away to the side, where a soldier almost caught it.

But before that soldier could scream or make sense of the situation, his head was already flying off as his body fell down limply and twitched.

That head fell towards another soldier, and as he tried to step away from it, his head was also sent flying. The process kept repeating, but none of them even knew where the attacks were coming from. After all, that man hadn’t even moved from his place.

With the cries of the soldiers as the background music, Robius continued to stare at the man with an agape mouth and wide bloodshot eyes. He could not understand; why was this happening to him?

Robius Mantony, the heir of the Mantony family, was one day supposed to inherit the title of ‘Viscount’ from his father and become a great man. From there he would have raised the power of his house and advanced his ranking, to one day become the backbone of his country and take it to new heights.

Couldn’t this man in front of him understand that? That he was in the presence of a talented man who would go on to become the greatest man the world had ever seen? That man should right now be kneeling in front of him and kissing his feet.

However, to Robius’ chagrin, that man did not seem to know that.

“Now.”

The man’s words brought Robius back, and he found that he was the only one left standing. His soldiers had been mutilated so badly that only an expert would be able to recognise them as human corpses.

And the perpetrator of all this was now standing in front of Robius.

“It seems I’ll have to leave you alive, so let me announce this. I….. am the Dark Hero, the shield of demonkind. Now.”

That man, the Dark Hero, smiled, and Robius instinctively understood that death would have been preferable to what was about to come.

“Let’s have some fun, shall we?”
