【Sam’s POV】

“Get out of the way, Sam!”

Shiggurath screamed from behind me and jumped. Everyone’s eyes turned towards her. She started gathering mana in her right hand which in turn started glowing.

When the amount of mana required was gathered, Shiggurath fired it like a laser at Regina who was nonchalantly standing in front of us. The beam was very fast, but Regina slightly moved and the beam hit the ground beneath her.

“No, wait you fucking idiot!”

Do it now, Hargreave!

At the same moment the laser hit the ground, Jack lifted his leg till it reached his head, and then smashed it into the ground. The only difference was that his action was too fast for anyone to see.

The moment his foot hit the ground cracks started appearing on the floor.

“Fall back everyone!”

However, it was too late. The ground beneath us crumbled and we started falling in the abyss that opened up. I started falling, and due to the debris that was falling along with me, I couldn’t make out who was falling where. I was worried about Chloe, but I’m sure that Jack would handle her.

Soon, I could see the ground and prepared myself to land safely. However, the moment I touched the ground, I heard a ‘thump’ beside me, as if something or someone had fallen there.

When I turned my head in that direction, I saw that Regina had also fallen down with me, and she was looking in my direction. I quickly looked around to see if anyone else had also fallen along with us, but fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, we were the only ones.

I looked up to see if we could climb our way up, but the opening through which we had already closed. This is one of the inherent functions of a dungeon: if by any chance, a hole opens in the ground or ceiling of a floor, it is automatically and immediately mended.

“It seems that we are the only unlucky ones to have fallen.”

She spoke with a sigh.

“Yeah, no shit.”

“So, would you be interested in picking up from where we left off last time?”

She giggled after saying that. And the way she said that was putting some lewd thoughts in my head. However,

“Doesn’t seem like we can do that though.”

“Yeah.”

However, we were currently surrounded by enemies on all sides.

“Did you set up a trap beforehand?”

“What a coincidence, I was about to ask the same thing.”

Then, there’s someone out there who wants to kill both the Hero and the Demon King. What a cruel world this is.

The place we were at was dark, except for the place we were standing at. By some mysterious mechanism, only the place we were standing at was lit up. We couldn’t see anything around us, but I could still feel the presence of a lot of living beings.

Soon, in the darkness around us, red glowing dots started appearing. They first appeared in front of me, and like a chain reaction, the dots started appearing everywhere. Those red specks seemed to be the eyes of the creatures surrounding us.

Soon, one of those pairs of eyes spoke in a croaky dead voice.

“Toetem.”

The pairs of eyes beside him also said the same thing.

“Toetem.”

The pairs of eyes beside them also repeated the same thing, and soon, every creature in this place, aside from me and Regina, was chanting the same thing.

“Toetem. Toetem. Toetem. Toetem.”

But what I found the uncanniest was the voice which seemed dead when a single pair of eyes had spoken, now seemed to strangely melodic when all of them were chanting simultaneously.

“Toetem. Toetem. Toetem. Toetem.”

Toetem. It is a word belonging to the ancient language of Ruina, and it means ‘Kill’. In this entire universe, only a selected number of species know it. Those are the species which have survived for a really really long time.

That means that either these creatures belong to one such species, or that someone from the said species is using these creatures.

In other words, I’m fucked. The plans I had carefully and painstakingly concerted have been severely compromised. I thought this was going to be a walk in the park, but it seems that I’ll now have to fight for my fucking life. Fuck.

“T-These are, wraiths?!”

Regina almost shouted in what seemed to be disbelief.

Huh? Wraiths? This world has wraiths? What the fuck?

“Hey Regina. Are these really wraiths?”

“H-huh? Uh, yeah. They really are wraiths.”

“Why the fuck does this world has wraiths?”

“But I don’t understand, they should have been wiped out five millenniums ago, unless………………”

She started muttering to herself.

“Sam, I’ve a proposal to make. Let’s enter a temporary ceasefire and act together, because that’s the only way we can survive this situation.”

A temporary ceasefire, huh.

I once again looked around me at the pairs of eyes which were still chanting Toetem. Killing them would be easy, but the real problem is their leader. Wraiths never follow someone, unless that someone is overwhelmingly stronger than them. With the wraiths here, I’m more than sure that their leader is aware of our presence.

“Fine. We’ll be making a temporary truce to survive. But in return, I want to know everything about this situation. You said that wraiths should have been wiped out, and yet here they are.”

“Consider it done.”

She agreed to my proposal immediately, as if she was afraid of something. I know for a fact that wraiths cannot scare the Demon King, so I guess it must be their ruler.

“Good. Then, what should we do right now?”

I should probably heed the advice of the one who’s aware of the situation we are in.

“I’ll directly cut to the chase. There’s only one way to kill a wraith, and that is to pierce them with a physical or magical attack right in the middle of their eyes.”

“Understood.”

Time to go J*hn W*ck mode, I guess. But before that.

“Regina, these wraiths. They are weak to light, I presume.”

“Yeah. But why do you know that?”

I hurriedly raised my hand and created a ball of mana on it. Then I threw the ball upward. It started flying up, after reaching a certain height, hovered for a moment, and then burst thus creating an explosion of light.

Light filled the entire room for about 10 seconds, and that was all the time I needed to check the wraiths’ appearances and learn their positions. The wraiths had covered their eyes with their hands and arms to escape from this blinding light.

The wraiths are ghost-like creatures. Its entire body is robed in an ashen coloured tattered cloth, with only their bony hands poking out from the sides. Even their head is hooded by that robe, and their entire face was covered by a veil of darkness with only two shining red dots visible which probably were their eyes.

Their hands resembled the hands of a skeleton, and their fingers were very long with long pointy nails at the end, which are used for physical attacks. However, they had no legs: they hovering just a few inches above the ground.

Yepp, they are mostly like the wraiths I know, except mine were robed in ashen red coloured clothes. From what I know, a wraith’s main weapon is his magical attacks. His magical spells lie in the illusion category: they cast spells which can cause confusion, dizziness, hallucinations, stupor etcetera. After that, they physically attack the target with their claws.

Interestingly, their hands have a mana draining feature. That means if they touch the target, they drain some amount of mana from his body, thus making him weaker. And if all of the mana is drained out, the target dies.

8 seconds had passed, and I had memorised the position of each and every wraith, and just how they would move after the light would fade. I took out the two guns holstered at my waist. The wraiths numbered around 200, and I had more than enough bullets for them. But before attacking, I glanced in Regina’s direction.

Perhaps she had already understood my intention, as she had already taken out her sword and was lunging at the wraith by her side.

Well, I guess it’s time to massacre some bitches.
