【3rd person’s POV】

The moment Reishu felt the severance of his contract with Ishmael, he hurriedly jumped off from its back and used flying magic. He came in front of his dragon and hovered there.

The dragon was flailing about, clearly suffering from the abrupt severance of the contract. Reishu gazed into the dragon’s eyes and saw pain and suffering in them. Shortly after, it was replaced by madness. Its eyes were bloodshot and there was not a hint of intelligence in there. Ishmael had been turned into a mere beast looking for prey to kill.

The dragon growled at the prey in front of it. It could only see a hazy figure floating there, and a voice in his head was commanding it to kill the figure. It was fighting its hardest to keep hold of its reason, but with every passing second it was losing.

Reishu realised that the current condition of his dragon was due to the roar from Bahamut earlier, and that his dragon was clearly struggling to maintain its sanity. Reishu knew what had to be done.

He took out his sword.

“Forgive me Ishmael…….”

He apologised, aware that the berserk dragon couldn’t understand what he was saying.

He raised his sword high up in the air, and brought it down towards Ishmael’s head. The sword’s hilt hit it hard making him unconscious and falling down. The soldiers beneath quickly got out of the way of the falling dragon. The dragon’s fall created a loud explosion and large clouds of dust rose up from the place it had fallen.

Reishu sighed in relief, because Ishmael won’t be able to interfere now and make him kill it, which he would because he was doing this for his daughter. Nothing could interfere with the resurrection of his daughter.

Just then, Reishu cancelled his flying magic and started falling down. A moment later, a fire breath attacked the place he had been at before. He started his magic again and saw that the one who had attacked him was one of the dragons belonging to a Dragon Rider. The dragon, who had missed its target, didn’t pay any mind and went off to attack someone else.

He looked over the entire battlefield from his position, and saw that all of the dragons were now attacking their riders and the soldiers beneath. At the rate this was going, their entire army would be wiped out before they even got the chance to fight the Demon Army.

He hurriedly contacted Alicia and issued his command.

“Tell everyone to kill the dragons attacking them! And ask Azell to order the archers and magicians to aim at the dragons and kill them!”

“Huh? B-But why…?”

Alicia, unaware that their own dragons were attacking them, asked in confusion.

“JUST DO IT! And tell the Commanders to handle the dragons as well!”

Reishu roared in anger as he had no time to explain everything in detail.

“Y-Yes!”

Alicia acted on Reishu’s command.

“William, Karzark, Reygus and Olivia. You are ordered to kill the dragons! And Azell, command your troops to fire on the dragons with the intentions to kill them!”

Obviously, none of them objected to this command, because the dragons’ atrocities were already in front of their eyes.

“Everyone! Swiftly kill the dragons attacking us! They are our enemies now!”

Reygus and William ordered the troops under them, while also moving to take on the dragons.

“Archers! Fire! Magicians! Fire!”

While Azell issued order to his soldiers.

There were around 3000 dragons, and it would take 1000 soldiers to kill one dragon, if they were lucky. Not to mention the number of casualties that would be incurred while killing the said dragon. The odds were overwhelmingly against the army of mankind.

Only the Commanders- with the exception of Azell- could fight the dragons one-on-one. Even among them, Reygus and Olivia were adept at handling the dragons and keeping them away from the humans and elves, while Karzark and William were barely holding on in this pandemonium. Although William was rumoured to be on the same level as Reishu, he still lacked experience- he had never been in the midst of Hell before. This wasn’t a war anymore- this was a slaughter.

Humans and elves were dropping dead like flies.

Ed, a soldier who had previously been a farmer in the countryside, had participated in this war because he wanted to protect his daughter and wife in the village. He was ready to risk his life for his cause, yet his life was about to end as the dragon in front of him prepared to fire his signature breath.

“Shit! I refuse to die like this!”

He exclaimed and ran towards the dragon to make a last-ditch effort. Alas, the dragon was faster with his breath and Ed was frozen to the very core of his bones. The only saving grace was that he died immediately.

Tina, the daughter of a declining baron. Overshadowed by her genius elder sisters and brothers, she had led a pretty mediocre life. But her father still loved her, so using his family’s influence, her father had her drafted as the commander of a platoon to let her achieve victories and make a name for herself. After this war, she was supposed to retire, marry the first son of a powerful count’s son and settle.

Yet here she was, riding her horse and trying her damndest to stay alive in this hell. The moment her platoon was assaulted by a fire dragon, she had turned heels and fled. A reaction expected from someone who had never even been in a fight. The despair in this Hell was too much for her.

“Fuck! No! I don’t want to die! Father! Mother! Please save- Guhaahhaaa!”

And that’s when her life and dreams were cut off. The proud fire dragon would never let a prey escape from its clutches, so it had hurled a large fireball in her direction. Both the horse and Tina had been caught in it. Her flesh had been melted and stuck to the insides of her armour, her blood had been boiled and her stomach and intestines had spilled out from her mouth as they were unable to handle the intense heat. Her death had been slow and painful.

Reishu now understood why the Demon King didn’t bring her army with her: because she had Bahamut on her side. The Dragon Emperor’s single command had turned their dragons against them.

Reishu fended off the attacks of a dragon, and sliced its head off using his sword. He was perhaps the only one who could handle more than one dragon at once.

But the dragon he killed was now replaced by two, and he had to evade and parry their claws and breaths and magic spells. Dragons were excellent magicians in their own rights, and it spoke of Reishu’s might just how he could kill them in a few moments. It was only natural that Simone would argue that Reishu should have been the Hero.

And that’s why he had to give it his all, for his daughter. Reishu was now surrounded by ten dragons at once, and as one might expect, he was having a hard time just surviving against them.

Feeling lost over what to do, Reishu parried the claws of one dragon with his sword and gathered mana in his other hand to kill it. But just before he could punch it, he had to back off as another dragon attacked him from behind.

The dragons’ coordination was perfect, and Reishu was unsure of whether he would survive. His biggest handicap was that he couldn’t use any large-scale annihilation magic spells, as those spells require a large casting time- a luxury the dragons wouldn’t allow him to enjoy-, and would also spell doom for the army. Forced to use only intermediate spells and his sword skills, there was only so much Reishu could do.

Just then, on the battlefield where the sounds of explosions were coming from every side, a really loud explosion bellowed, followed by a huge shockwave which shook the dragons beside him.

At that moment, every dragon stopped moving and looked in the direction of the source of the explosion.

Reishu also followed their gazes, and found a lone figure floating in the air where Bahamut used to be with large black wings on his back. And then he saw the figure of Bahamut being sent flying back as if it was hit in its face by something.

Reishu recognised that back.

“Jack?!”

Following his shout, all of the dragons on the battlefield screeched in rage and flew towards Jack, ready to pounce on him and tear his flesh asunder with their own claws as a punishment for laying a hand on their king.

“Shit!”

Reishu cursed and followed the dragons, because he feared that Jack wouldn’t be able to handle so many dragons at once.

Of course, his fears were unfounded.

Jack turned around and stared at the dragons with a bored look. The two dragons nearest to him raised their claws with the intention to kill him, but-

They couldn’t even scream as their bodies were cut into tiny pieces and fell down. The Ancient Dragon Shiggurath had slain two of her brethren without even batting an eye.

Shiggurath and Jack talked some more, before they exchanged their positions. Jack was now facing the numerous dragons who were nastily waiting to make a move and be the ones to kill the mongrel who hurt their sovereign, while Shiggurath faced the still recovering Bahamut.

Jack splendidly ignored the dragons waiting to kill him, and looked around till his eyes met Reishu’s.

Reishu suddenly received a message.

「I have a job for you.」

Which was clearly sent by Jack. This was the beginning of the second Act of this war.
