【Episode 1 Part A: Sister and Legend, Part 4】
After I reported all that has happened during my summer trip to my sister, nothing worthy of mentioning happened for about a week.
Summer supplementary lessons were finally over, but I was still going to school every day to act as senpai’s guardian and escort… but that was only a pretext I was using to keep spending more time with her, since she was spending everyday in her suite inside the clock tower belonging to the Librarian Committee. Until one summer evening I received a peculiar phone call.
The caller was Yahata Yorugao. A girl whom I met during Shiinamachi-senpai’s 「Dangerous Day」 that happened during our stay at Hachihoukan, a former doll indistinguishable from normal human created by Yahata Yugao’s 『Angelic Gift Azrael’s』 power. Before she was posing as Yugao-chan’s older sister, Asagao, but after the events that transpired during our stay there she finally chose (after some gentle persuasion) to become her own person.
「Yahoo, Monjiro-san! How are you doing? I’m sorry for calling you so suddenly.」
「No no, it’s fine. It’s great to hear you so full of energy. So, what are you up to now?」
「Still working my butt off in the mansion but together with Yugao we’re thinking of going back home to have a little vacation. Even maids need to recharge their batteries every once in a while.」
「I see. By the way, thanks for everything you’ve done for us during our stay there, short as it was.」
「Ahahaha, you’re thanking us while we’re supposed to be the ones thanking you? You did so much for us that we will forever remain in your debt.」
「I don’t really feel like I did all that much, but if you say so then I won’t argue. Anyway, why are you calling me so suddenly?」
「Ah, that’s right! I have some huge, juicy info for you!」
「Juicy info? And what might that be?」
「Listen to this! A Legendary Knight is coming to the town where you, Shiinamachi-san and Shiki-sama live!」
「A Legendary… Knight?」
「That’s right! A super strong, super elusive, super legendary figure!」
「All right, I get it, I get it, the guy’s super amazing.」
「Great, that makes things a lot easier. He’s supposed to be so OP that he’s even supposedly able to kill a Lord even on a Safe Day!」
「Really? Even if there shouldn’t be any risk of dying on that day?」
「That’s basically it, but as with every rule, there are exceptions to it. Take what Yugao and I tried to do for example. Creating a separate space and fighting a Lord there is just one of the many ways to defeat him.」
「Ahh, I see. So essentially it’s like an exploitable loophole in the system or a game-breaking cheat?」
「That’s exactly it! And since it can also be used to bypass your Gift of immortality, I’d advise you to be extra-super-duper careful from now on, all right? Be sure to stay away from him, you hear me?」
「Thank you for calling me just to tell me that. I’ll be sure to keep my guard up at all times from now on.」
「Glad to be of service! Actually it was Yugao who was supposed to give you a call, but as soon as I suggested that to her she went all red and had one of those adorable little freak-outs of hers so the responsibility of carrying out that task automatically fell onto me. I’ll have to tease her about it later.」
「Maybe you should cut her some slack and be nicer to her for a change?」
「Nicer you say? Can you wait just a sec, Monjiro-san? Oi, Yugao! Don’t 「What is it?」 me here! Here, hold the phone for me will ya!?」
「Hyawawawawawawawawa?!!!!! Um, I, I mean, well…..!!!!!」
「Ah, is that you, Yugao-chan? Good evening.」
「G, G-G-G-Good evening, Monjiro-san! I… I…」
「Don’t force yourself, Yugao-chan. Just take a deep breath and relax.」
「A, All right. *Inhale*… *Exhale*… *Inhale*… *Exhale*…」
「Good. Were you worried about me too, Yugao-chan?」
「Y-Yes, that should be obvious! After all, both Yorugao and I, we’re very… so very grateful to you, Monjiro-san! If something were to happen to you…!」
「I’m also thankful to you for all you did for us. Next time when you’ll be in the area make sure to drop by so we could hang out and have some fun together, all right?」
「Yes! We’ll do that for sure!」
「And thank you for the information. About that 「Legendary Knight」 fellow, I mean.」
「But of course, I’m glad we were able to be of use to you in any way! Also, I heard he commands some dangerous abilities like manipulating people’s consciousnesses or altering their perception of reality, so please, be extra careful!」
「I will. I’ll also consult Shiki about it so we could come up with countermeasures against him together, just to be on the safe side.」
「Yes, that will be for the best. And, well… it was nice, to hear your voice again, Monjiro-san.」
「Same here. Now be sure to enjoy your vacation with Yorugao to the fullest, okay?」
「Y-Yes, hyaaaah?!!!!」
「Okeydokey then! Bye, Monjiro-san, and stay safe! *Kiiiiiiiiiiiiis!*」
「Yeah, stay safe as well, Yugao-chan, Yorugao.」
I end the call and stare at my smartphone’s screen.
「A legendary Knight, huh?」
I coughed a few times, since the staircase where I went to answer the call was somewhat chilly in the evening. If something like that ever set its sights on Shiinamachi-senpai, it would be quite bothersome.
「Manipulating the consciousness and altering the perception of reality… talk about an overpowered combination.」
Was he using some kind of illusion to do that? Or was that simply mind control, an ability similar to the one Fujisato possessed?
If you disturb the brain’s recognition, it is possible to harm and even kill your victim without them noticing and running the risk of getting harmed yourself.
Like an illusion of being stabbed with a knife, for example. Even if you’re not really stabbed, as long as your brain perceives the damage as inflicted you’d die from said wound as if it was really there. In other words, the illusion that produces the fake effects that are indistinguishable from reality, the results of said fake effect will become reality.
「If he commands illusions that are capable of killing, then I will really need to be on my guard and possibly finish him quickly in the worst case scenario where we’d be forced to fight each other.」
Because the way I am now, I’d have no way to defend myself against illusions or mind control.
My mother’s words inadvertently come to my mind.
Because I now have something that I didn’t have when I was being trained.
That something is 「the heart」. It can prove to be both my downfall, since it can be used against me to create an illusion that will capitalize on my biggest fears in order to break me, but it could also be my greatest countermeasure. After all, it is said that a strong will backed with unshakable conviction and a mental image of what one holds the dearest can be enough to shatter any illusion into a million pieces, or so the story goes.
「Anyway, I have to tell senpai and Shiki about it.」
However, since Shiki was Yugao’s cousin she probably informed her about it already, so all I had to do now was to go back to the suite upstairs to speak with Shiinamachi-senpai.
