CHAPTER 116: TENSION GROWS HIGHER

The party turned completely around with the arrival of the Archduke, the festivebatmosphere that was present before has completely died down and the only point of focus was my mysterious man and the King with me between them. To say it was a tense situation was an understatement. Even though the guards were not currently pointing their weapons just having them around was uneasy. Even Vitou-sama with Nakamura-kun and Ishikawa-kun looked ready to fight at a moment’s notice.

The King and the Archduke were probably the only ones not nervous. I could understand why my mystery man would not be nervous as he is super strong and all, but seeing the excitement in the King’s eyes was something I didn’t expect to see. I could swear I could see his eyes sparkle when he heard I was this man’s sister, although not actually true, but he must have thought about something at that moment.

“I had no idea she was your sister. If you want, I can appoint her any rank you want, since you do have the authority to ask for it. But if that is the case, why didn’t you already claim a Duchess or even lower rank before today. She clearly told me that she is not a noble when we met.”

What is he planning? I know he is always looking to gain something out of every situation; he wouldn’t be talking about this if he didn’t have a plan to get something out of. I had a bad feeling about this.

“No, she and I are not related by blood. However, certain circumstances made it so that we are brother and sister. That is why I referred to her as adoptive little sister when I talked to Vitou-kun last time. That is why technically she does not belong to my house… yet.”

Not yet? Does he plan on bringing me to his house in the future? I kind of like the sound of that. The bells ringing, a choir singing and birds chirping me wearing a beautiful dress and him wearing black clothes as usual, ah the future looks so bright right now. And while my expression was turning brighter the King’s was becoming dark.

“So it was a situation like this, I must have misunderstood. Vitou dear, you have met the Archduke before, tell me should I let our Naoko-chan be under his wing. I can’t help but worry, you see she is very important to us.”

He motioned Vitou-sama to come closer and speak up. It finally clicked who Vitou-sama was mentioning when we met last time. No wonder he was afraid all of a sudden. It was like having a strong cousin at school and nobody wanting to mess with you because they are worried about the cousin. Honestly I like having that kind of backing. And since Vitou-sama is so against the marriage between the two of us, I am sure he would agree.

“Archduke, please forgive me for not recognizing your rank before, I hope you don’t hold it against me. While I can understand your concern regarding Naoko-chan, I can assure you that right now she is more than capable hands. I believe you are aware of her strength and in my honest opinion, staying near Earl Orzak would be more beneficial for her growth, since he can help her become more proficient in her skills.”

What?! I can’t believe that you have betrayed me! Why don’t you just let me go? Isn’t this the best way to get your father off your back? We also wouldn’t have to marry this way. What’s with this sudden change of mind?

“So you refuse my proposal? It is truly a shame. May I hear the real reason why you don’t want her under my house? And I want to hear it for your father’s mouth and not yours. Just like you, I can also tell when someone is lying to me and trying to crawl around the real truth.”

I gasped. There was so much tension in the air and with these words that he had spoken it was like the fuse has been lit. Several nobles began protesting, standing on the side of the king demanding for more respect and to punish my mystery man. The guards that relaxed just a moment ago raised their weapons once again.

“Boy you sure speak confident even with so many standing against you. I have no obligations to obey you. Your title may be strong but in the end you are still under my rule in this kingdom and that means that you obey my rules.”

Oh, oh this is turning really bad for all of us. Nakamura-kun and Ishikawa-kun both stood before the Crown Prince shielding him in case that a fight breaks out. The guards also tightened the circle around the few of us and separated us from the rest of the nobles present. Subconsciously I moved closer to the Archduke. I should probably say something to try and calm things down.

“King Erik-sama please, there is no need to take such drastic measures over me. I am extremely glad you have given me a noble rank as a reward for my contribution, but having my brother next to me is truly something I wish for. As the family situation is complicated, I could not inherit the noble rank. As he is willing to come out it means things are calming down at home.”

I decided I should go with this brother-sister act since he started it. Adding more background to the story will only make it more believable. Since I was the one being discussed, I thought I should say something before I truly regret it. Besides maybe, just maybe, if I go along with the Archduke I could meet him more often.

“This is a matter of men; women should not meddle in politics!”

I swear I heard something snap loudly inside me. The moment I heard that, the little respect that I still held for the King, came plummeting down. Why should I give him respect just because his ancestors sat on the throne and now it his turn? I am not of this world in the first place. I let out all my killing intent and filled the entire hall with it. I will definitely not tolerate others treating me like this.

I saw the two heroes back away pulling the Crown Prince with them. Several noble ladies screamed out and fainted, their partners or family members dragging them out. Even the guards began to sweat and their hands started trembling.

“You shouldn’t have said that. Even I can’t guarantee your life now that she is so angry. You see, when she goes all out nobody can predict what will happen. She tends to come up with some really unusual ideas to obtain victory. Nao-chan, don’t do anything rash and calm down.”

I felt his hand on my shoulder. Even though he was standing right next to me he was completely unfazed by my bloodlust and show of power. The King on the other hand did not seem as calm anymore. He must have realized that he said too much and was firmly grasping the sword hilt preparing to pull it out at a moment’s notice.

“Naoko-chan, you know better than to go against me. Not even you could defeat everyone here. Even with that pet of yours you weren’t able to harm us and that time I didn’t even enter the fray. Stop this nonsense immediately.”

“Father, stop… don’t provoke her anymore!”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I willed Sapphire to appear in my hand and immediately the King was ready with his sword as well. There was huge oppression that I felt when I stood opposite him. I don’t think I have ever felt this nervous and it all came from the swords.

“Nao-chan you found yourself a good weapon, but please lower it. This is for your own good as well as most of us here. Nothing good comes out of pinning these two swords together.”

I looked at the Archduke with surprise. I did not think that he would be able to realize just what these two swords were representing. I guess he also has a skill similar to mine that lets him see the information about items. When I looked back at the King, he no longer had his calm expression, for some reason he was terrified instead.
