CHAPTER 131: BUSTED

***LUCA’S POV***

It has been a month since I arrived at Orzak. I know that my mission to infiltrate this team and Dragon’s Descent Clan is a tough one with a lot of danger, but so far there hasn’t been a single test that would cut the numbers. We were all told that there would be a special test which only those that pass can enter the clan, but so far all we did was study and practice. At first I thought this would be a waste of time and that His Highness was worried about Naoko-sensei for nothing, but with more time passing I realized I was able to improve drastically. Not just me, but everyone else as well.

Tomorrow, she said that something will be different and that there would be no lectures, but a special event. That is why I decided to call everyone to the inn hall.

“Luca, do you think tomorrow is that test that will cut off some of us?”

“I don’t know Simeon, I can’t read her at all. I was shocked when I first saw her. From what I heard about the leader of Dragon’s Descent I was expecting someone majestic and grand. But, seeing that she is not that much older, came as a surprise to me especially when I think about everything that she did, including defeating the golems and contributing to the understanding of Creation Magic.”

“Actually I wanted to leave when I first saw her, but she is on a completely different plane. I am extremely proud of my ability to hide and my tracking skills, but one time I was paired up with her in a game of tag. She had 30 second advantage over me and I couldn’t find a single trace of her. It’s amazing. I heard you had a similar experience.”

“Don’t even mention it, my sister and I both went against her and she had our asses handed to us without even breaking a sweat. But yeah, she really is amazing.”

I was annoyed since I admired her power and I had to spy on her. Moreover, I felt that if I stick around her I would be able to achieve my dream of rescuing my mother. The only reason why Ina and I entered the knight’s order is to gather enough money to free our mother from slavery.

“Right, she even showed me a cool trick with my magic. Since I am a healer she gave me a book she specifically wrote for me to help me improve my knowledge of humans and to be able to heal better. Man that book is amazing, it has so many detailed information about the human body and how it works. Whenever I don’t understand something she would explain it to me. Naoko-sama is a true genius.”

I looked at the most monstrous person among us all. Since we were travelling together we learned a lot about each other and even then, when this petite girl showed her skill by completely reviving a monster that lost all its limbs and was on the verge of death in mere minutes she had every single one of us petrified in shock. I worked with several healers, but none were as strong as her, and she just said she was improving her healing ability. It honestly scared me to hear that.

“About the event…”

I don’t think we need to worry about that.”

I looked at the guy acting as a ranger. His skill with a bow was quite good and he had a steady hand. He usually kept to himself, but when he did speak it was always something important. He was simply one of those guys that didn’t bother with small talk and only spoke when they had something to tell.

“What do you mean Tomaz?”

“Think about it objectively, why put so much time and effort into training all of us only to drop us at some point. If this was some elimination test she would have given us the task like hunt a dragon in the next two months if you can’t you would be cut off and not spend hours of your free time teaching us and making plans for future lectures. If you ask me the real test was the notice that there will be a test to weed out the weak-minded people too scared to join the ranks. Also if you take into account all 24 of us with senior members included, we make for one extremely well thought out and balanced party.”

I paused and thought about what he just said. He really did have a point there. Both with spending the time to train us and that we make for one well balanced party, why didn’t I see this before?”

“Then what about that special event tomorrow she mentioned?”

“Who can tell, knowing her it could be anything. I’m sure you heard the same rumors about her as I did. I don’t know if they are true, but if I were to believe them, then tomorrow’s event could be anything from fighting monsters barehanded to chasing air.”

I think we all heard those rumors, especially the one where she beat the crap out of Byakko and then tamed him. I cannot help but feel pity whenever I see him. Other stories include her famous drinking ability, the lightning walk through the town and crazy chase of invisible things. Either way, ever since she arrived in this place became livelier.

“I hope it has good food… I tried her cooking that day and I am certain she has the legendary cooking skill.”

“Ina, I feel you… uwah, that food was to die for. I heard you need to spend years cooking and inventing new recipes to learn that skill. This skill is so rare, that merely by possessing it you are qualified to become the royal chef on the spot.”

I looked at the two girls that were completely unaffected by the special event tomorrow. I really admired them how carefree they can be. We all stayed together for a bit longer discussing what tomorrow might hold before going back to our rooms.

I took out a pen and paper and was about to write my report. At first I had no trouble writing this letter to the Crown Price, but as time passed and I got closer to Naoko-sensei it started to be unbearable. I really didn’t want to keep betraying Naoko-sensei, but I couldn’t betray the Crown Prince.

‘Knock’’Knock’

“Luca-kun, can I come in?”

Shoot! I immediately hid the paper and the report and opened the door. Naoko-sensei was standing there. She entered the room and sat down at the table. I couldn’t help but feel nervous.

“What brings you here sensei?”

“Luca-kun, you and your sister are working for Vitou-sama, aren’t you?”

H-how can she know that? I was certain not to show it in any way.

“You must be worried about that. Lately the two of you seemed very stressed so I want the two of you to know something. No matter what you do, you are free. I knew that when I sent a notice of recruitment there would be others that wanted to use this opportunity to send their spies and yet I didn’t care. To me you are my student and to Vitou-sama you are his informant, those are both your identities, so do not worry and just be yourself. You can tell him everything that you are being taught, you can tell him everything that you hear about me, because this is your job.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I was so sure she would send me away once she learned the truth, but I didn’t think she was aware of it all this time and still did not care. I really didn’t know what to think.

“Look here, I don’t care what that spineless fickle person learns about me. He already thinks he will end up the winner, but I will show it to him that he will never be able to possess me. So do tell him about that in your next report. Don’t forget tomorrow you have to be prepared for the special event.”

I stared dumbfounded as she got up and left. I wasn’t able to speak all this time. Right now she looked so cool and majestic, just like how I imagined the leader of Dragon’s Descent would be. I took out my report and finished writing it including the report where she is already aware of my identity and her words to him. I probably shouldn’t have done this, but hearing her words I had the courage to send such a report to His Highness.
