CHAPTER 138: AVOIDANCE

I used the moment that the Guild Master was stunned to do the only logical thing in such a situation; I ran away. Using [Blink] I moved to the street and from there I broke into a sprint towards the Goblin Lair and my future dungeon. I needed to not rake up any contributions and remain a B-rank adventurer for the rest of my life. But someone seems to have different ideas and I had a pretty good idea who that someone is.

“Naoko-sensei you are back early. I thought you would come back tomorrow.”

“We finished early. I’ll be in the dungeon. If the Guild Master or anyone else from the guild comes by looking for me tell them you haven’t seen me all day. Bye!”

The one that found me was Ehni-kun. I didn’t want to go to the inn because that would be the first place they would come looking for me. I quickly reached the fourth floor of the dungeon and crashed on the portable couch I had installed there. I should be okay here since nobody has reached the fourth floor so far, not to mention that there are still some D and C-rank monsters roaming on the upper floors.

“This is so much better, at least for tonight I will stay here. If that guy comes by he might not leave until I go back to the guild with him.”

I am certain that if I had remained at the Guild he would have definitely awarded me with more contributions than what I really did and will most likely still do that once I show up, but at least for now I will be at peace.

Lying on the couch I began organizing my inventory and waiting for sleep to overcome me. I will most likely be in trouble tomorrow, but I will deal with that once the time comes.

I woke up feeling refreshed. As I was underground I couldn’t hear the roaring of the dragon and was able to sleep peacefully. Reluctantly I got up and went outside. Sadly today wasn’t a day off so I had to go and teach my students. I was certain the Guild Master would ambush me outside, but once I arrived there was nobody there aside from my students.

“Good, now that everyone is here the lesson for today can begin.”

“Naoko-sensei I saw something really interesting in town at dawn. Did you really take down a huge ogre with two heads in one hit?”

“I heard about that as well. Did you also eliminate an entire village of ogres in half a day?”

I froze and my mind went blank. They shouldn’t be aware of this fact. The heroes couldn’t have arrived here and the only other person that could tell them was the Guild Master, but I don’t think they would have heard it from him as he doesn’t meet with everyone.

“Why are you talking about that? Who did you hear it from?”

“There is a huge projection crystal showing it at the Town Hall. Also a petition was started for you to show up so your contributions can be calculated. Ina and I want you to confirm is it really true and I am pretty sure others are curious as well.”

“I’ll tell you once you finish my training Luca-kun. Until then it is a secret if what that crystal is shown is true or not. For today I will have you work in two groups of twelve, this is the next to last step in your training. Now that you are familiar with more specialized roles you should be able to work better in larger groups. Later on you will consist of a full raid party.”

“Sensei, you mentioned this before, but why do you call it a full raid party with only 24 people in it? Isn’t that too small of a number? Other groups for raiding have 50 people or more depending on the monster they are planning to take down.”

“Because coordinating such a large number of people is a pain in the neck for me. The more people there are the more variables there will be and the opportunity for someone to screw up will grow bigger. Besides the amount of time I would need to spend on training them is way too much. It would be endless. Also the food, the living expenses… I shiver just thinking about it. Anyways all of you have been trained to work even in smaller parties so in case you separate during some request/raid you will be able to work just as well.”

This was the answer I prepared for when they asked. It is logical to think that with more people they would take down the monster faster, but I want them to not think within boundaries, but to think outside the box and fight creatively.

Moreover, they are still not aware of it, but all of them are much stronger than the average adventurer of their rank. I think that because they have been fighting monsters that are by no means weak in the past few months, they were able to progress so fast. In my opinion, they will be able to run dungeons all by themselves in the next two months.

“Actually starting today your lessons will change a bit. I will have all of you become B-rank adventurers. Zyra you already achieved this, but since you are part of the team, you are still working with them.”

“That is only logical. Nobody gets left behind.”

“Good, that is the way to think. Every time you finish a request you will have a day of theory lessons with me, and in case I am not here I want you to do self study. If you have any problems you can always come seek me out. Now for today try and reach the third floor of the dungeon.”

The group dispersed and I was left alone. Time to set plans for my dungeon in motion.

***NINO’S POV***

“Nino dear, as soon as you see Naoko-chan add a completed A-rank request to her contributions on the guild card, also make sure you put this tracker on as well. She is suspicious, I think she had completed much more high level requests than what I thought. Another thing I want you to pay attention to is the materials she is selling and the quantity of it.”

“Uncle you are acting odd. Sure Naoko-san hides her power, but she really seems desperate not to rank up. I think putting up that projection crystal was too much. Also you’re leaving all your work to me again.”

“It’s our luck that the annual meeting of guild masters is coming up. Close to 900 ogre corpses are in her inventory and god knows what else. I will definitely borrow the Stick of Truth from the Capital’s Branch.”

I stared at my Uncle in disbelief. The Stick of Truth is a legendary item created by the first generation heroes. Among them one was quite shameless and often resolved to thievery so he created an item that would allow him to expel the contents of item boxes and inventories.

“She will retaliate if you do that, don’t you know that? I won’t go against her. It is the same as signing a death contract.”

“I know, I know, but we really need another strong adventurer. You already realized that more and more strong monsters are appearing near here. Also the news about a new dungeon in the Icefire Mountains and a dragon that nestled nearby all make me feel bad. I need someone that can take on S-ranked monsters and Naoko-chan is the best candidate.”

I knew that as well, but the fact she was unhappy was very clear to me. Also having all twelve heroes being summoned means that a great Calamity will hit this world and I cannot help but worry about it. Having a talent like Naoko-san is priceless and that is why we must nurture it, but I am scared she might run away if we push her any further.

Seeing that my Uncle had no intention to change his mind I could only complain in my head as I went to see him off and return to the guild.
