CHAPTER 158: A-RANK

“I hate you!”

The Guild Master had left the arena and I was left alone with the Archduke.

“Hate me all you can, but this is merely a passable thing. It’s not like you will die or something. Besides this is only logical since I knew you would avoid ranking up normally. If I didn’t give the push, you wouldn’t reach A-rank for at least another year or two depending on how much you wanted to intervene with your clan.”

He was completely uninterested with the stuff lying on the ground. Well it is a good thing since I had no way to stop him from taking whatever he wanted.

“Still, I hate you. What gave you the right to bargain with my life in the first place? If you wanted the dungeon, then you should have married a princess. Not force me to obey you like this with your stupid magic and curses.”

I was glaring at him since that was the only thing I could do. Sadly it was not very effective. I kept on cursing him inwardly when I could hear a literal ‘boom’ inside my head. I knew immediately that this sound is that of magic that bound me to Orzak being broken. It also meant I have now become A-rank adventurer officially.

“Good, gratz lil’ sis. I’m looking forward to seeing you in white. If you want to I will walk you down the aisle. Now it is my turn, I need to make sure you don’t harm the Guild Master. That means you cannot harm him either physically nor go after his position and status.”

Just as I got rid of one curse, another one was placed on me. I didn’t even bother to resist. What’s the point anyway, in the end everything will go according to his own will and I am just a pawn for him. I didn’t even bother retort about his comments and just remained emotionless while bound by magic.

“All done. Naoko-chan, you are now A-rank adventurer. I look forward to working with you in the future. As well as with you Archduke. Can I deactivate the relic now or do you still need more time?”

“She can’t move against you. Since my work here is done I will be off. I’ll see you at the capital Nao-chan.”

“Whatever.”

I watched him disappear. The guild master deactivated the magic binding me and gave me back my guild card which was now painted silver. As soon as I took it, he backed away and left the arena. Like a zombie I moved through the items, collecting anything that had value and leaving behind spoiled food and some low level monsters that I didn’t sell.

It was over, my life ended. I’m certain that bastard went to inform the King and the Crown Prince. I have spent so much time and effort trying to prevent this outcome in the foreseeable future and all of it was in vain since I got tricked by the aforementioned bastard and the guild master. I looked at the arena that was still in a mess and decided, since I cannot harm the guild master; it does not mean I cannot make things uncomfortable for him.

Encompassing the entire arena venue I casted a curse magic that will make the corpses rot and food spoil at an alarming rate. Then using [Transfer] a space magic I rarely used since it is extremely costly I moved two decaying corpses of orcs into guild master’s office just under the flooring and left the arena.

When I reappeared in the guild hall, everyone was congratulating me as the announcement about my promotion has already been made. But before they could swarm me I made sure to teleport away and hide.

I wanted to just curl somewhere and cry, but my tears just wouldn’t come. In the end I decided to head back to the inn and back to my room. I will stuff myself with food until I throw up and then I will just sleep. Sleep until all of this goes away.

I was moving extremely slow from Orzak and it took me five hours to reach the inn. I had concealment active and also made sure to avoid any and all presences around me. I wanted to be alone. I even thought about going to the dungeon, but comfiness of bed won over.

“Mistress, welcome back.”

“Princess, stay at the reception, I will be in my room. Sorry, but I will be leaving you with a lot of work.”

“Mistress, you seem distressed, what is wrong?”

“I’m fine.”

I left her at the reception and went upstairs to my room. I took out one of the few cakes that have survived and dug in using a spoon. I couldn’t taste it at all. Eventually I tasted salt. I must have looked so pathetic bawling my eyes out and stuffing myself with food, but I really felt like I needed to do that. Everyone has time when they feel like utter sh*t and can’t deal with anything at all

At one point Fulgy entered the room and sat down behind me letting his back touch mine without saying a word. He just waited there letting me know about his presence through this touch. I had long finished the cake and was only crying trying to lull myself to sleep.

***NINO’S POV***

I only saw Naoko-san for a bit today when I led her to the arena just like uncle told me to. I didn’t want to do anything more than this despite him trying to persuade me saying things like ‘you must be curious what she is hiding’ or ‘don’t you want to know if there are some legendary monsters in her inventory?’ but I didn’t want to hear it at all. I could understand his reasoning as to why we needed another high rank adventurer aside from Banbo-san, especially with everything happening in Doren lately, but offending Naoko-san is not the way to do it.

Afterwards I saw her once again as she left the guild. I barely recognized her. She was looking down, her shoulders slumped and looking utterly devastated. I could not believe that that is the same person that always looked down on everyone and never let anything put her down. But I could not understand it. This is not the way you would react to getting a promotion. I felt like I was missing some critical information and thinking about every time her promotion was mentioned and how she reacted I couldn’t help but shiver.

“Uncle, were you able to find out why Naoko-san didn’t want to rank up? Or did you do something that made her extremely sad?”

“Don’t be ridiculous. I didn’t steal anything, she did lose a lot of food though, but that doesn’t seem to be reason enough. Maybe she doesn’t want to deal with hard requests, but that also seems unlikely. Maybe she’s just shocked for reaching a rank in merely a year.”

I saw her and that expression definitely wasn’t shock. Maybe we should have gone along with Naoko-san and let her rank up at her own pace. It’s not like she wasn’t doing anything or ignoring the safety of this town.

“I still think something is wrong. I am afraid she might retaliate against us. Aren’t you afraid of that as well?”

“Don’t worry, I took some precautions. She won’t lift a finger against me.”

“Is that so, then why aren’t you in your office and taking up my space at the counters?”

“It’s impossible, she did something and the entire office stinks. It’s even worse in the arena. At least that place can be cleaned up, but inside my office I have no idea what she did to make it stink like that. It’s like there is a rotting corpse inside. It’s unbearable.”

Oh dear lord. I left my uncle to deal with his work and moved to another counter. Please dear lord save me from Naoko’s wrath. At least give me a chance to leave a son or a daughter behind before I die.

“Nino-kun, did you just say something?”

“No Millie, I didn’t say anything. Don’t worry, you can go home if you want. I will make uncle work if there is a crowd later on.”

Save her as well, she is too pure and precious.
