CHAPTER 180: BAD LUCK

The party was over and while luckily not being a complete disaster, I could feel something was wrong. The atmosphere in the air felt dangerous. It didn’t help that one of the guests bumped into me and made me spill wine on my clothes and later on I stubbed my foot on the table when heading for my room. But I shouldn’t focus on bad things, luckily the Archduke was here to prevent her from doing any more damage, but with how things are going I feel like she will become more unbearable.

I let Ishikawa and Nakamura go rest and was about to hit the sheets when there was a knock on the door.

“Vitou, may I have a word?”

“Father, come in. What brings you here? It is already late.”

My father looked upset. Something must have happened. He wouldn’t have come here otherwise. I cannot even fathom what it would be, but I was sure of one thing. I would not be getting any rest tonight.

“The Undying Necromancer raised and army. It is marching here as we speak. The messenger proclaims that he wants the Cursed Dark Sword otherwise he will not call back his troops. There is just one problem, there is no such item in our possession.”

“How many?”

This is really bad news. How come there was no prior warning to this? I know that he can appear however he wants to and summon his army at will, but why is he doing this now. He never made such a direct attack for years now.

“First assessment is about two thousand. If he has more bodies, then we will most likely have to gather an army of eight thousand, if not more. Those that die might even turn to our enemies. I hate his magic so much. You can never relax, and can never know who your enemy might become.”

Two thousand seems quite the small number considering his past achievements. What is he planning? He can’t be thinking of taking on the entire capital with only that number.

“How about we don’t prepare an army at all and meet him head on with a dose of his own medicine? We do have a potential Necromancer right here in the castle. I bet she could come up with a way to deal with his magic. If we promise to move the wedding back to a later date, she will definitely accept.”

The undead are terrible because unless you completely destroy them, they will keep coming to kill you. Never hungry, never tiring, never feeling pain. There is only one way to hold them back and that is with overwhelming power and numbers and even that is not a certainty.

“Umm, about that, she might not accept. Believe it or not the undead army is good news. The true bad news that I have, my dearest found out the truth. Naoko told her everything and she might be having plans on her own.”

Oh… We’re screwed. If Royal Mother knows I can see why Naoko would refuse the offer. I better come up with a deal she would accept. But seeing that she knows, I am not surprised why this is happening tonight and why I am having such bad luck with everything. Let’s just pray Nao-chan does not know what the Queen is planning on doing and still decides to lend a hand.

“Doesn’t matter, the wedding will still, doesn’t matter if she knows it or not. Father, I will go and meet with Nao-chan. Who knows, she might accept it after all.”

I dressed myself and went towards Naoko’s room. The only worry I had is that she was not in her room and I would have to search for her, but it seemed I worried for nothing as she was sleeping already. Well it is an emergency, so I guess she won’t be mad about me waking her up.

“What do you want? Unless you are here to apologize I don’t want to listen.”

“There is an emergency, can’t you hear it? Kapitalia is under attack and it is the Undying Necromancer. His army will reach the outer outpost in an hour. If you can take it out I can promise to move the wedding at least one month later, it’s a bargain for you.”

“Three!”

“Two.”

“Fine, but I want all the loot from the undead. Everything that is confiscated from that battle will end up in my inventory. Otherwise I won’t move a muscle and simply go back to sleep.”

“Deal, now come on. We need to hurry.”

I could not believe that she agreed so easily. On the way I told one of the guards to bring out the wyverns and to rouse all the reserves that were in the city at the moment. It would be reckless to leave everything to Nao-chan. There is no guarantee that she would be able to deal with all of them.

The clearing to the North of the city was lit with countless lights. Everyone was on alert and in fear. I really hoped Naoko would be able to calm them down, but when I looked at her, I couldn’t help but shiver. Her bloodlust was wild and she seemed extremely thrilled. I can’t believe how she can change her whole personality in an instant, she’s a complete battle maniac.

“You’re Highness, there are five thousand soldiers on standby. What are your commands?”

“Wait for now. We will first deal a preemptive attack and then take further measures. I will go up with Naoko and my father will arrive to command the soldiers.”

I waited for Sharpbeak to be brought here. With me on the wyvern, the soldiers would definitely get a morale boost and it might even give the commoners who were feeling scared some ease and hope for the best outcome. Also no matter what Naoko does, the two of us would look like a power couple. Definitely a win-win situation for me. After all, no matter how impressive her tiger was, it could not compare to a wyvern.

I looked at her again. She seemed to be murmuring something to herself and drawing a circle on the floor. It was not my first time seeing a magic circle, they were used to amplify and describe magic and were considered part of now ancient magic. The Hero Summoning Ritual uses a magic circle as well and according to the books that was the most powerful magic the gods left us. There was just one major flaw to using them; it takes way too much time to set one up.

“Your Highness, Sharpbeak has been brought over. Are you setting off alone?”

“Not alone, she is going with me. Nao-chan we must set out. I can’t have the undead come any closer.”

“Shut up, I’m concentrating. However, if you have time, gather everyone in one place. If you split them into three parts, you will be annihilated.”

“What three parts? Everyone is already here.”

“Idiots, this is only a third of an army. You have two more forces marching towards East and West each. Now run along while I finish preparing things here.”

I turned pale. There were not two thousand, but rather six thousand undead. This Cursed Dark Sword, why does it mean so much to him that he would raise so many undead just to find it. I wanted to fly out and deal some damage to the army when Naoko finally finished, placed her hand onto the circle and with a huge movement of mana activated it. Soon a bright light shattered the night.

“Who dares to call me and awaken me from my sleep? I will not allow any creature to treat the great me as so.”

“I call you, and I want to form a contract with you. How about it? It’s a deal for you no matter how you think about it.”

I regained my vision and saw Naoko facing a giant golden colored bird that brightened up the entire place from the glow of its feather. It was not something I saw before, but something I only heard heroes talk about. A legendary creature that can rival dragons.
