CHAPTER 212 – ABOUT MAGIC

The storm ended up lasting for another day before it died down. This meant that I was forced to spend an entire day with Vitou who kept on observing my every single movement as if he was expecting something. And it didn’t help that Marc was the same. It was the worst whenever I was around Mia.

Taichi and Daisuke were messing around with Space magic and the inn turned into their personal playground. According to them, what they were practicing was precision and also started betting on who would be able to do it better. Good for them, at least they weren’t bored.

Currently there were two adventurer parties staying at the inn to avoid the storm. They were both C-ranked parties with only one B-rank adventurer among them. While I was talking to them I suddenly had a thought that our party would most likely be categorized as S- or maybe even SS-rank, but since it was temporary party there was no need to register it with the guild.

“Naoko, can we take some of your time? It is just a small thing.”

I will give in. The two Heroes looked like puppies begging for treats. It is probably something about Space magic.
“Fine, what do you need? I will help you.”

“Yes! Anyways, it is about [Blink]. I get that it is short range teleportation, but why wouldn’t it let me go through walls? It should work out if you think about it.”

Oh that, now that I think about it, I didn’t tell them about it. I can use this opportunity to explain it to them.

“To use Blink you need to physically see the target destination and only then would you be able to achieve it. If you have a way to see it and it is in range of your magic you will be able to use Blink. Instead of thinking it about disappearing and reappearing, instantaneous movement should be more precise. I think that is why Earl Orzak was able to discover it, he must have thought about moving so fast that he would appear to be disappearing and his magic activated. This also explains why you can’t move through walls.”

“Oh, so that is the catch. But there should be a way to get past the obstacle. Like some other form of magic. I’m sure you have a way to move to places that you don’t see.”

“There is, but it is exhausting and if you force it beyond your limit, there will be a penalty. Unless you are certain that you won’t pass out from exhaustion don’t even try doing it. I will tell you that it is called ‘transfer’. You will need to figure it out on your own. But first make sure you are extremely familiar with using Space magic through Blink.”

I don’t think it is good to take shortcuts when mastering magic. It is best to discover it on your own. I am actually glad that I didn’t make any shortcuts when studying because that allowed me to develop my unique way of using magic. Also through trial and error I was able to become more focused for longer periods of time.

“Transfer you say, hmm… I have some ideas as how to use it. What is the penalty that you are speaking of?”

“I’m not so sure about the exact thing that happened to me since I was unconscious, but from what others told me I seemed to be unaffected by the passing of time or something like that. Ask Vitou, he knows about it. But luckily I was able to come back to that time. I don’t know if that is normal or a person can forever be stuck in a state like that.”

Moving over a hundred objects even across a small distance was too much of a hurdle for me at that time. As I got more familiar with Space magic it became easier to handle anything to do with it. Even the cost of casting Blink went down. Right now I should be able to transfer three or four people alongside me as long as it is not some insane distance.

“Naoko-chan, sorry to interrupt, but I want to know, can you move instantly across any distance.”

As soon as Mia asked that both Vitou and Marc turned around and stared at the two of us. Seriously what is wrong with the two of them?

“Not exactly anywhere, the longer the distance that I need to travel the harder it is to accomplish it and it will exhaust me more. I prefer using Blink over Transfer because it is easier and much faster as it activates instantly.”

Transfer needs time to activate, because of that it can be interrupted even by weaker magicians if they are aware of it. When I am in battle I don’t want a situation like that to occur. Also I could not bear to tell her that I could escape her pursuit at any moment without breaking a sweat.

“Naoko, I also have a question. I heard you summoned monsters when you fought the undead army. What magic is that, is it also counted as Space magic?”

Marc decided to join in as well. I saw that the two parties staying at the inn also moved closer to listen in. New magic is always interesting. I think they want to join us, but seeing Vitou and Marc made them hesitate. Poor guys.

“Not Space magic, it is light magic for light creature, dark for dark creature and so on. Think of it as non-attributed magic. However you need a medium for it to activate and even then you can’t exactly know what will come out. When Elyra came out she scared the crap out of me. I never intended to summon a phoenix, creatures like that cannot be bothered all the time.”

“So what do you need to do in order to summon them?”

Nice try Vitou, but I won’t be spilling the beans. You already are aware of summoning magic, so just figure it out on your own.

“Luck and mana, I’m not saying more.”

At this moment the party leaders gathered up the courage and decided to approach.

“Please excuse us Your Highnesses, can we join your conversation. Lady Naoko seems very knowledgeable about magic and I wish to learn some more.”

I smiled, this day had turned into a magic lecture day. Why not, at least this way I wouldn’t be bored, so let everyone ask questions. It made me feel the same way when I was teaching my elite raid party. I miss those kids. I hope I will be able to see them soon, after all I need to tell them about the wedding and to ensure all of them are present at that time.

And so the rainy day was spent discussing different types of magic and skills. After all the exhaustion built up in the past few weeks took a toll on all of us and such a cozy and lazy day was much needed to relax. And with a brand new sunny day we set off for Orzak once again.
