CHAPTER 234: LOOKING FOR THE TRUTH

***VITOU’S POV***

“Princess Zimo, how do you explain this? I never allowed anyone to insult me and you daring to poison my fiancée is the biggest insult to me, her and the entire Kingdom of Elicia. Do you want me to make a move against your family?”

How dare she poison my Naoko?! I will not tolerate such disrespect and I will make sure to take revenge if my Naoko doesn’t wake up soon. And I am not the only one feeling like this.

“No, I… Vitou-sama, I… this…”

She was stuttering and couldn’t even make a single sentence. Seeing her acting like this only made me feel even more enraged. She is daring enough to poison a person in broad daylight, but couldn’t even answer a single question and immediately started sobbing like a baby.

“Vitou, calm down. Zimo couldn’t have done this. You know just as well as I do how polite and well behaved she is. Wait until everything is concluded to cast your judgment. Think about it clearly, you also drank the same wine as the Duchess and you are perfectly fine, aren’t you?”

“Vitou-sama, I… this is not my fault. I only wish Vitou-sama would be happy and if Naoko-sama is the one to bring you such happiness, who am I to destroy that? I never wished for anything to happen to her.”

I couldn’t help but doubt if she really poisoned Naoko or not. After all, just like the King said earlier, I drank the same wine, but I am feeling perfectly fine. On the other hand, Nakamura was the one to say there is poison in the cup and I know better than anyone how great his abilities are. I am sure that he didn’t lie to me when he said that. And Princess Zimo was the one to bring the poisoned wine to Naoko.

“Bring me everyone that was involved with drinks for tonight. If I find out someone tampered with the drinks, please forgive me Your Majesty, but I intend to retaliate. There should be some evidence on those people that gave poison to my Naoko, I want everyone searched.”

“Guards, you heard our distinguished guest, go and search for the poison.”

At least the King had enough sense to help out with this investigation. I glanced at the Archduke who seemed like none of this had anything to do with him. He was the one that made me think Princess Zimo was the culprit, so why isn’t he saying anything now. Could it be that he was only guessing and realized it was a wrong assumption. There is no point trying to figure out what he is thinking in his head. I turned my attention to Naoko who wasn’t showing any signs of waking up despite being treated several times with magic.

The doctor that was called looked confused about something. He was able to confirm that there was no more poison inside her, but according to his own diagnosis, she should have woken up already. He kept muttering that something was wrong and this makes no sense at all.

“Your Highness, I am truly incompetent, but I advise you to prepare for the worst. This one had a special talent since birth and can sense the breath of death around others. Right now such breath is very heavy around her.”

I lost all strength. I could not believe what he was telling me. How can all that be true? She was always so energetic and full of life, so how come she turned out to be this way? This can’t be true!

“Doctor, you must be wrong, please check again.”

“Vitou, don’t forget, my cute little sister had already died once. It is normal to have the breath of death around her.”

The Archduke spoke for the first time since all this commotion was occurring, and his words were truly like a drop of water in a desert to me. That’s right, she died before coming to this world. It is normal to be surrounded by death. Nakamura, who was trying to figure out what was wrong with Naoko, also chimed in.

“Your Highness, you should know this, but she always had an aura of death around her. But unlike the Heroes it is more prominent than ours. As time passed, such aura slowly faded away from us, but hers keeps on getting stronger and stronger. I think this should have something to do with her not having the blessings of any of the gods. However, this doesn’t seem to bother her at all. After all, she is livelier than all of us combined.”

The doctor seemed interested with what Nakamura said and started discussing with him about her circumstances. He wanted to know if that is what caused her to fall unconscious. As they were discussing all this, he kept on sticking silver needles into Naoko. I was worried, but seeing Nakamura wasn’t reacting to this odd treatment, I decided to let it slide. When it comes to medicine I admit to not be knowledgeable enough. This doctor should know best what he is doing.

“Your Majesty, Your Highness, everyone was brought here.”

I looked at the line of maids, chefs and castle staff, but none of them seemed nervous or worried. Either they were excellent actors, or they are innocent and have nothing to do with the poisoning incident.

“Search them, find the poison! Vitou, I will give you an answer, so you shouldn’t worry. As soon as the culprit is found, I will ensure they provide the antidote. The Duchess will be fine at that point.”

The guards kept searching, but unfortunately, nothing was found. I was stumped, could it be that no evidence would be found? I refuse to believe it! I was putting pressure on everyone around me hoping that I could find some clues about the culprit and make sure to take revenge for Naoko.

“Nakamura, just what poison is in that cup? If we know that, maybe we can narrow down the suspect.”

“The poison is called Cold Embrace, but I have no idea how it manifests. There is also no record about it in my appraisal.”

I never heard about this poison. A part of my studies included different poisons and ways to detoxify them in case something happens to me, but I never came across this name. There was a person that reacted when he heard that name.

“Doctor, are you aware of this poison?”

“Your Highness, I really did hear about this specific poison, but I was not aware that it existed in this place and time. This thing is ancient and the materials to make it should already be extinct. There is an antidote, but I don’t have materials to make it. But if the poison truly is Cold Embrace, something is definitely wrong.”

I was surprised, this doctor didn’t seem that old, and yet he was aware of such old poisons and not only did he know how to make it, but he already knew the recipe for the antidote and even knew that the materials were extinct. Such a person should be kept at watch and if there is a chance, I should try and persuade him to join Elicia. Even though the two kingdoms were at peace, I didn’t like the fact Vilikis has such a good poison master as this young man.

“What’s wrong?”

“The poison at hand should not have been manifested in this manner at all.”
