CHAPTER 254: TO ACT OR NOT TO ACT

“””WHAT?!”””

“What are you thinking, taking him in?”

Everyone aside from Fulgy and the Archduke jumped up and started clamoring. I was expecting this and merely waited for everyone to calm down. The notoriety of Black Hand is simply too much. If any of the guests learn about this, the reputation of this inn will. While it doesn’t matter that much to me, I still don’t want bad stories to be spread about it. On the other hand, if I can apprehend the Black Hand member, it will definitely boost the popularity of the inn and I could probably raise the price further. Who knows, maybe one day people won’t be grunting and be willing to pay such outrageous prices.

“Who is he? How do you know he’s a member of Black Hand?”

When the Archduke asked, everyone woke up from their manic state and calmed down. His words acted like cold water being splashed onto them.

“Remember the guy that attacked Kapitalia? He’s the one. I wanted to make a move, but he didn’t seem to recognize me. He talked to me and showed no reaction. His behavior was strange and I didn’t dare to act then and there.”

“Smart move. If he is the same kid, there will be someone else monitoring him. I don’t know who it was, so it is better that you didn’t act.”

Could it be bait? Did they think I would come here and are testing me if I will react or not? I was skeptical. How come he didn’t recognize me? I mean I never disclosed my identity as a Duchess when I was working as an innkeeper, but there should be some people that know what I look like. When the announcement about my engagement with Vitou was made a picture of me also was released. Now that I think about it, nobody recognized me as a Duchess aside from that dude from Blood Knights group that we destroyed a long time ago.

“Naoko, you may not know this, but when you are acting as an inn proprietress you turn into another person. I don’t know how you are able to do it, but if I didn’t know you personally, I wouldn’t be able to connect you to the Duchess that has so many legends about her. Nothing about you, from your aura and demeanor to your clothes would make me think of you as a future Crown Princess.”

I frowned at Taichi’s words, but didn’t dwell too much on it. I was always taught to adapt to many different situations. Acting a small role like this is nothing to be proud of. But still, why is the effect so big?

“My bride is the best, no matter what she does.”

Fulgy said it matter-of-fact, but I could hear the pride in his voice. I sighed helplessly before speaking up again. I will not let his praise go to my head.

“I think this may be a trap. That is why I called everyone here. I don’t want to let a chance like this pass by. We should take this opportunity and lure the person behind the scene. However, we must be extra careful not to alert him. We need to act covertly.”

“Nao-chan, what do you have in mind?”

Vitou was finally calm and was sipping his tea. He seemed to have come up with an idea of his own, but he decided to give me precedence and let me say things first.

“I want to borrow the guards’ hands. Aren’t they looking for a murderer who just happens to be a Necromancer? I want to bait him into using undead magic and at that time the guards will accidentally catch him red handed.”

If I simply march into the guardhouse and report it, I would be suspicious. There would be countless questions to answer and I don’t want to deal with any of that. Not to mention that it would delay our return too much.

“How do you plan on luring the person behind?”

“Through temptation. Don’t Necromancers need good corpses to raise undead? If I offer a rare monster corpse, and the Black Baron can’t act upon it, do you think the person behind will remain still?”

This way I can get one to show him magic, giving the guards a suspect and a culprit. If the person behind decides to make a move we can use the same situation and catch him. The later part will be completely reliant on the Archduke. If the person is someone we can deal with, it will be great. And in the case it is not easy to deal with or the fight will incur other difficulties to the Archduke, I can plant a spy among enemy lines.

Everyone fell silent and they were thinking about the possibility of the plan working out. I gave them time to think about it clearly and then moved over to discuss something with the Archduke. It was somewhat inconvenient to discuss in front of everyone, so I put up another barrier to isolate all sound.

“What’s so important that you need to hide like this?”

“Can I borrow some dungeon points from you? I want to buy a monster and bring it out of the dungeon. I will need two million points to do it. I don’t have that much at the moment.”

I already had a perfect monster that I could use, but I had no idea how to get it, aside from grabbing it directly from the dungeon catalogue. The reason why it is so expensive is because I want to bring it out of the dungeon that will cost double the price of the monster.

“So it is about the dungeon. No wonder you want to hide things. But that won’t be wise. Just use one of your normal monster corpses. Those guys aren’t picky. As long as it is rare, they will fight for it. You are underestimating their greed.”

I was silent. The monster I originally wanted to use is called Crystal Thunderbird. It has countless crystals all over its body and it is very convenient to hide a few recording or surveillance crystals among them. Plus that monster is rarer than dragons, and lives in difficult terrain.

“Are you sure? I wanted to plant it as a spy if we can’t deal with them.”

“Don’t you have faith in your big brother? Even if the Black King arrives I will have a way to deal with it. Later on, I will come to your room to discuss something with you. Let’s deal with this first.”

He waved his hand and the barrier I set up dissolved instantly. I wanted to complain, but I couldn’t. I can only do as he says and go back to my seat. The others looked at the two of us with questioning looks, but neither of us bothered to explain what we talked about.

“To act or not to act? What do you think?”
