CHAPTER 266: THE MEMBERS OF SCARLET PHOENIX PARTY

I entered the main lobby of the mansion and chatted with the members while I waited for Mia to return. I wanted to meet her party members before heading off to deal with other matters of the clan.

I should have done this when they first joined, but I was too busy being lazy and avoiding tea parties to do it. Not a very responsible action if you ask me. But now that I am here, I will act like a proper leader and deal with everything I am required to do.

I didn’t have to wait long and soon six people entered the lobby. I must say this group of people is by far the weirdest bunch of people I saw. If all of them were standing in the guild next to each other, there is no way to tell that they belong to the same party. Usually, the people in the same party would have a similar feel about them, something you develop as you spend a lot of time together, but I couldn’t detect it. Even Banbo’s harem party seemed more harmonious than these people.

Right now, these six people looked to me like someone picked them up on the street and wanted them to work together for the first time. When talking about an S-ranked party, this is not what I had in mind. If they look like this when filling requests, I don’t know how they were able to reach S-rank.

“Welcome to Dragon’s Descent, I should have greeted you earlier. You must be the Scarlet Phoenix party. Can you please introduce yourselves? I want to know more about you. I am Maeda Naoko, the leader of this clan. Call me however you want, just don’t address me as ‘Honorable Boss’.”

When they sat down, the other members of Dragon’s Descent, present in the lobby, all retreated and allowed us to be alone to chat. I was already familiar with Mia, so there was no need to introduce her and she went to get some tea and snacks. I was expecting the oldest person to talk, but the one that started the introduction was the youngest one, or at the very least the one that looked the youngest.

“In that case, I will call you Naoko-chan, just like Mia-chan. My name is Lorien and I am the party leader. I am in charge of making sure that our requests get completed successfully. I am also the reason why this bunch of hoodlums can work together.”

So, she’s aware that they look nothing like a party. I let her continue on.

“The old guy is called Peter and he is blind, but don’t underestimate him. His magic is the strongest among all of us. He uses water magic, but is very proficient at hand-to-hand combat. Don’t ask me how he can fight when he is blind, even I don’t know. However, I can tell you for sure that he is completely blind.”

I looked at the old man that seemed well over seventy. I just couldn’t see it. How can a blind man fight like she said? Does he use mana to perceive the surroundings? Well, he can stay in this party, this alone proves his strength.

“The fatty is Evan, he’s the one that can take the best beating. No matter how badly beaten he gets, the next morning, after a good night’s sleep, he is like a new man. Naturally he is our meat shield when we get in fights.”

I felt pity for the man. Obviously, he is risking his life to protect everyone, but the party leader treats him as such. It’s no wonder they look like strangers standing next to each other.

“The invisible one is Nathaniel. He has no sense of presence even when you are talking to him. I don’t remember how many times we have set off to do a request and forgot to tell him about it. It is always Mia that has to go back and bring him along. He is a light mage and our carrying mule. For some reason, all monsters and bandits keep on staying away from him and they never attack him.”

I looked at the man sitting next to Peter. He seemed quiet, but it didn’t feel like he has no sense of presence. But now that I think about it, I completely overlooked him when I saw everyone. I guess there is some truth about her introduction after all.

“You already know Mia, so I won’t speak about her. As for Bob… Hey Bob, why are you in this party?”

I couldn’t believe this, she doesn’t even know him? According to my information, he should be an S-ranked adventurer alongside Lorien and Mia. Seriously, with a party leader like her, how can these folks work together to bring down monsters or hunt down bandits?

“I’m here to ensure that you can actually kill monsters. Maeda-san, I am a swordsman dealing explosive damage. I’m the only heir to the Devil Sword Style first popularized by Hero Hori. I have heard about your peculiar sword style and I wish to meet it one day in a duel and see how well it fares against my own.”

I looked at this man who was dressed in all black clothes and covering his face with a demon mask. I don’t know if this was to stay true to the theme of the sword style or merely his preference, but it didn’t suit his gentle and kind voice at all.

“It’s nice to meet you, I hope that Dragon’s Descent can live up to your expectations.”

Although they didn’t seem to be what I thought they would be, I should still believe in the ability of an S-rank party. Moreover, these are all people that Mia introduced; if anything, I can trust her.

“Now that the introductions are out of the way, let’s talk business. You didn’t call all of us here just for a small chat, did you Naoko-chan?”

When Lorien said that, the atmosphere in the room changed completely. I could feel the temperature drop and a sense of killing intent spread among the five members that I just got to know. Standing opposite them, I could feel a real sense of pressure, something that not everyone is able to make me feel, this much didn’t even come from an A-rank monster when I faced them. I could finally see how these people were able to become so strong. They must all be battle maniacs.

But there is one thing that I discovered from this situation. The weird magic that makes everyone treat me like a mafia boss, didn’t seem to be working on them. Now that is an interesting fact. That magic was set up by Thanatos-sama himself, so it shouldn’t be possible to resist it, unless there are some special circumstances, or they were able to figure out the magic and find a loophole to evade it.

“Indeed, I want to give you a task and a position in the clan at the same time. You joined under your own volition, so there must be something that attracts you here. Let’s get along in the future, there is a long way for us to go.”

I looked at the five people that I just met. Without effort, I was able to get some amazing people to join Dragon’s Descent. I think that things are about to get interesting.
