CHAPTER 289: HIS DISCOVERY AND DISGUST

“Don’t you want to know what I need you to promise?”

“It doesn’t matter to me. No matter what you want, I will do my best to do it. I don’t have anything interesting to do in the near future so I might as well do your request.”

I was definitely escaping reality and claiming to have nothing to do. It’s not like I was trying to change the world order and ruin the royal wedding in the passing.

“Good. What I want is to escape this prison. I want you to find a way through which I would be able to roam free once again. I am tired of this place.”

So he wants a body, doesn’t he? Since that is the case, I will be able to do it somehow. Considering I am a spirit magician, I should be able to figure out something. At the very least I will make him into an undead and let him go do what he wants.

“It’s a deal. Come on, tell me what happened to you? I really want to know.”

“As I told you, my name is Sai and I used to be part of the second generation heroes along with seven others.”

Oh wow, he’s old. This all should have happened well over 500 years ago. It is no wonder he’s grumpy and doesn’t want anyone to use Obsidian Curse.

“Anyways, the day we were summoned, we were all told that this world is facing a great threat and that our help was needed. They sang praise about our strength and gave us the best items before sending us off to fight with monsters.”

“It seems that things haven’t changed much over the years.”

“I am not surprised, they were quite stuck up back then as well. Anyways, we fought together and grew stronger day by day. I wasn’t the most outstanding among the heroes, but I still had my part to play in the party. It was during our raid against the Demon Race that I overheard something interesting.”

Oh, we’re finally getting to the good part.”

“Before I say anything else, there is something you should know. I was the only person among the heroes that could use Spirit Magic, that is why I was often able to see things that otherwise were invisible to others. And among them ghosts were quite numerous.”

“I know what you mean, I had to find a way to deal with them quite some time ago. If I didn’t do anything, I don’t think I would be able to live peacefully.”

Thankfully, that blessed salt did its part and I can live normally.

“Heh,  I don’t envy you. Anyways, what I saw were two giant ghosts arguing over who was wrong and who was right. One of them was saying that eternal life should be available to everyone and the other said only the strongest can be entitled to it.”

“At first I planned on ignoring them, but as they kept on following behind us I ended up hearing everything they said. Finally they stopped arguing and started cursing someone called Thanatos, blaming him for all the problems in their lives.”

Ah, I already know what happened to him and why he was never mentioned in any of the books talking about heroes.

“Let me guess, you found out that the twelve gods of Doren aren’t the true gods and they only worked as underlings of Thanatos-sama.”

“How… how can you know that? I still remember the Church burning all the books and evidence of Thanatos, the Titans and other traces of gods. I tried to fight them, but when I confronted other heroes, I lost all my strength because the Blessing of Hamill disappeared. When I got caught I knew that all of them abandoned me.”

What a sad story. But those guardians are really pretentious. I bet that Hamill dropped his Blessing to stop the knowledge about Thanatos-sama from spreading. Either that, or he lost a bet.

“I know it, because Thanatos-samais the one that sent me here. Actually, Rosa was the one to take me from Erath, but she only wanted my friend, so she dumped me, but none of the other gods wanted me, because I wasn’t pretty. I used to have a nasty scar across my face and those so-called gods wouldn’t want someone like that to be their representative.”

“Ouch, I haven’t thought that you had such a thing happen to you. I knew they were a no-good bunch, but I didn’t think they were so bad.”

“You don’t even know the worst. The whole ‘world is in danger’ cliché is nothing more than a game they play to pass the time. In fact, they place bets on how their heroes will perform and observe everything like it is reality TV; each hero has its own channel.”

Thankfully, Thanatos-sama acts like an overprotective parent and he made sure that nobody dared to make things difficult for me and there were no real obstacles coming from the guardians. I will not mention a certain someone that seems to be spoiled by Thanatos-sama as well.

“WHAT?! How dare they? How many people have died because we were not strong enough to defeat the monsters? And now, you’re telling me that they are doing all this for fun?!”

“Hey, I’m just telling you what I learned about the situation. It’s not like I can do anything about it. I mean, even if they are underlings, they are also gods. Not something mortals like us can go against. The only thing we can do is live our lives and keep those close to use safe. And that is exactly what I am doing.”

“Aren’t you angry about it? What about Thanatos? Why doesn’t he condone their behavior?”

“He’s too lazy to bother with them. He won’t do anything as long as it doesn’t implicate him. The only reason he saved me is because I made him get up and do work.”
