CHAPTER 3 – CERBERUS PARTY

“Naoko-chan, don’t be depressed, magicians that can use dark magic are often wanted
in many parties since they can help take down strong monsters.”

“Lassie, magic is a force of mind. You might find yer own way of usin’ magic that is
different from the norm.”

I was rather glum after learning about my magic. Currently, I had no strength to
fight on my own and no offensive magic to back me up.

“Look here, up until recently light magic was thought to only be for purification and
healing, but I was able to find a new use for it and attack with it as well. Behold;
Light, come forth and form an arrow. Pierce my enemies –[Light Arrow]

A shiny arrow formed atop his hand and he hurled it towards a nearby tree. It struck the branch and exploded on impact.

Did he actually destroy a monster right now? But this magic he showed was considered something new and innovative here? It is like the most basic magic spell to use in games. If you can manipulate the element, you should be able to form it however you want as long as it has matter. Maybe it is not too late to cast off all magic just yet.

“Pretty impressive, eh lass? Our Colt here is one of the best out there.”

“Um yeah, it’s good… very impressive Colt-san”

My words sounded dull, but I felt some hope. Since magic is not very advanced I will just experiment on my own to test my hypothesis and suspicions.

On our journey east I needed to learn more about the world that is why I made sure to
find out as much as I could. This world was divided into two large kingdoms; Elicia on the North and Vilikis on the South. The two are on peaceful terms and have been the past hundred years.

The common currency in both countries was called Lyr and it was divided into four types of coins. Copper which was worth 1 Lyr, silver worth 100, gold worth 10,000 and platinum worth 100,000 Lyr.?

Just for reference, a single night in an average inn would cost about 150 to 200 lyr with meals included. One gold coin was enough for a four man family to live for a month comfortably.

“…Nord… ahead…bad people…”

Blink-san who was usually on lookout duty, suddenly reappeared next to the carriage
scaring me half to death in the process. The other two seemed completely unaffected with his sudden emergence.

“Bandits, thieves, it doesn’t matter, I can finally move around a bit. I was startin’ to get really bored only waitin’ around. Lassie, make sure you stay behind near Colt and don’t you worry one bit.”

We proceeded onwards with slight caution. Nord-san was slightly ahead of us with
Colt-san and me driving the carriage. Blink-san disappeared off who knows where and he couldn’t be seen at all. Since everyone was aware of the enemy I wasn’t too concerned about surprise attack.

“Well, well… what do we have here? It seems a group of travelers, and quite strong looking ones. Young missy you sure look important to have such bodyguards.”

An unruly man stood in the way blocking our path. He was somewhat short and large,
nothing like a warrior type. Moreover he was alone as far as I could see, but I knew better than that.

It seems like Blink-san was starting to work behind the scenes. But it was creepy to just
receive EXP from nothing. I wasn’t even in the party and I gained experience.

“Who are you? What do you want?”

Nord-san held up his axe and asked with a panicked voice. It sounded very convincing
even I would be fooled if I didn’t know how excited he looked just a few moments ago.

“Ha… haha… I am Sancus of the Black Hand and you just enter our territory. You can
forget about leaving this place with you lives.”

The moment this guy introduced himself three people died almost immediately. These
messages were making me feel slightly ill if I must say so. After all they were all people and Blink-san killed them.

“I’m warning you, let us pass. If you don’t I might turn violent.”

“Nothing but false bravery… Everyone attack them!”

He yelled out and immediately took out a metallic wand out of his coat. So it turns out he is a magician. As he gave the order two men jumped out from their hiding place and attacked Nord-san and us.

My heart began racing. This was a real battle. I felt as if I am back inside “Free World” with the sensation of a fight hitting me. Licking my lips in anticipation I prepared myself to cast magic. I didn’t know what I could do but there is no regret in trying. I raised my hand and prepared to try out a random chant, but before I could utter a single word Colt-san wielded his staff and hit the approaching bandit on the head knocking him out and with a short chant hurled several ice arrows at the magician. The moment arrows reached him Blink-san appeared immediately behind him and cut his throat. Nord-san who was going
against another axe-wielder easily overpowered him and cut him down.

The last bandit alive, the one Colt-san knocked out earlier came to and seeing his
comrades dead uttered in fear and terror.

“Who are you people?”
“A-rank adventurer party: Cerberos at your service.”

With those words he swung his axe down killing the last bandit.
