CHAPTER 32: SETTING THE STAGE

*NINO’S POV*

“Uncle, shouldn’t we stop her? If she continues like this I’m afraid she will end up killing herself. After all she is a promising adventurer.”

“Let her be, I don’t remember the guild being this lively ever since Nord and his company moved to Kapitalia. Besides, that man over there will take care of her. He is plenty strong to do it just fine.”

Uncle left. Since I didn’t have any work for today I decided to have a drink as well. I
should be fine as long as I don’t start drinking with Naoko-san. I sat a few tables away and observed. Humans in this town were really interesting, no matter what, they could turn any occasion into a celebration, singing, dancing, feasting or drinking. I was lucky that my job allowed me to interact with them so much.

Because of that same job, I became familiar with most of the inhabitants of this town and I was sure that this man standing next to Naoko-san had not come by here at all. I don’t know where he came from but she seemed to be quite relaxed around him.

Since I was curious, I decided to look at his aura. The moment I set my eyes on him I
froze. The ghastly gray and deathly still aura made me feel extremely afraid. All my senses were telling me to run away from him as if he was the death himself. I forcibly cancelled my vision and tried to calm down, but my heart wouldn’t listen. I had no idea who that person was, but to have such annaura one would have to be surrounded by death every day. Either killing others or killing yourself, otherwise you wouldn’t have that aura.

I was scared but I activated my aura vision once again. I wanted to make sure that Naoko-san was not under a spell cast by this man. I was worried she might get hurt if she stayed next to someone that was so dangerous. But when I looked at her aura it was different. Crystal clear and ever changing, the color kept changing attribute but the clarity was never lost.

It was beautiful to watch and at the same time also terrifying because she gave me the same feeling as that man but on a much smaller scale.

“I am unbeatable, the last boss! How’s that? Not even four of you can take me down. Well then how about I take you on, my dear companion?”

What the hell is she thinking about? Can’t she see that was reckless and dangerous? This man is definitely not someone she can take on. This man that was with her however shocked everyone with his next words and action which was further deepened by Naoko-san’s reaction.

“Hmm… this ought to be enough for now. Don’t forget why we came here.”

The man stood up and embraced Naoko-san before bringing his head down, but before he could move even further Naoko-san literally jumped and curled her legs around his waist and placed her hands on his neck and pressing her lips against his.

Such blatant show of affection in public made me drop my drink and I wasn’t the only one. Soon there was an uproar among the adventurers. I should have known this, there were not many female adventurers in the guild here and seeing their Queen being taken away like this did not sit well with everyone, especially that her position had become more like the guild’s princess with her neat look and generally polite manners towards everyone aside from Anika-sama.

“Our Queen, give back our Queen”

“Your Queen makes her own choices, and she is choosing this man.”

She broke away from her man and ordered another drink. Somebody should definitely
stop her. This is going too far. I got up and decided to put a stop to it. I was approaching the very drunk Naoko, when from the corner of my eye, I noticed the very same dark green toxic aura I have been chasing all day long.

No way, if that person attacks now, she won’t be able to defend herself at all. She is already barely walking, if she were to fight now, she wouldn’t be able to even hold a sword properly. I looked at the petite person whose figure was hidden by a cloak. I need to catch them and interrogate them. I immediately changed my direction to catch them but it was too late, the person raised a tube to their mouth and shoot out a small dart.

“NO! STOP!”

I yelled out turning my head to look at Naoko-san filled with worry. Someone help, if that hits her, who knows what will happen. But when I looked back she was no longer there. What?

Where did she disappear to? I only saw her man smiling oddly satisfied.

“Now that was not really nice, little lady. If this thing hit me I would have died.”

My head snapped to find Naoko-san standing behind her attacker holding the dart between her fingers, playing with it. How the heck did she arrive there?

“Let me go you witch!”

A high pitched nasal voice screamed out. A woman was the attacker? But why scream ‘let me go’, she wasn’t even being held by Naoko-san. Did she cast some kind of spell? But to do that without even gathering mana and no incantation, I simply cannot believe something like that can be done at her level.

Trying to figure out what was happening, I realized that the entire space was filled to the brim with mana belonging to Naoko-san. No wonder she didn’t need to gather it, it was already here in the first place. But to prepare like this, I can’t say if she is foolish or brilliant.

“I have no plans to do that little missy, you see, you have caused me quite the headache over the past few days. It is really frustrating avoiding death all the time.”

“I have no idea what you are talking about!”

“You may be able to trick everyone else on this planet but you will not trick me. Your
aura is so disgustingly green and you left me more than enough greeting cards to be aware of it. If I didn’t have my summoned beast with me I would have died a hundred times over.

Summoned beast? What was that? Could it be that she had discovered another type of magic application? All that studying must have been for this cause. If that magic becomes public and many people can use it, she might be even awarded a title of nobility. But to confirm that Naoko-san has aura detection, that is a true treasure, since this is an extremely rare gift. Only those with sensitive eyes can hope to learn it one day.

“Tsk, this wasn’t what we were told about your abilities. In that case I demand a fight against you under the rules of the adventurer’s guild and stake our lives in exchange for freedom.”

Huh? A duel can only be held between two adventurers in order to be an official one.

“I Irina von Loren, B-rank adventurer challenge you Naoko Maeda to a life or death match!”
