CHAPTER 36: JUMP RANK

I am going to kill him. That lazy and shameless person that comes and goes as he pleases should just go and die. I was bound to have done something really embarrassing while I was drunk, I tell him my life story and this is how he repays me. I should have never trusted him.

I bet he just wanted to see me drunk.
I opened my eyes and squinted from too much light that was in the room. When I adjusted my sight I realized that I was not in my room. I had absolutely no idea where I could be at all nor what time it was. Getting up, I looked around the room. I was sleeping on a sofa in what seemed like an office room. I began searching for any clue of where I was when the door opened.

“Naoko-san you are finally awake. I came to report that Anika-sama has been caught and her grandfather the Duke Loren and her father were both been informed about all that had happened yesterday including the betrayal of Irina-sama. They have agreed that they will not ask you to compensate with your life.”

The guild master gave this report in a manner that I was his superior and not the other way around. What on earth happened yesterday? And who is Irina-sama? But more importantly…

“EEH? Bitc.. I mean Anika is the duke’s granddaughter?!”

“Yeah, didn’t you know that already? Anyways, the investigation of the Black Hand member concluded that he ingested a highly toxic solution that killed him almost instantly. This was done most likely so you wouldn’t extract any information from him.”

Black Hand, suicide, betrayal, poison? Just what happened yesterday while I was drunk?

“Is that so? Say, guild master I am sorry for asking this, but what the hell happened
yesterday?”

This time the one frozen from shock was the guild master. He looked at me like I was an idiot. Please don’t stare at me like that. Don’t give me that ‘you can’t be serious’ look.

“Naoko-san just to confirm this; could it be that you cannot remember at all what you did yesterday even after causing such commotion, having done all that you did and not recall it at all seems unlikely to me.”

“I am terrible with alcohol. Even a single cup hits me and I can’t remember anything I did the next day. That is why I generally avoid drinking. Last thing I remember is my myst… I mean the man that was with me bringing me tea and realizing he added alcohol to it.”

“I cannot believe this! There is no way that can be true; you of all people can’t handle alcohol? Last I saw you, you were drinking in a 4v1 match and you were winning.”

I stood motionless as I heard about everything that had happened last evening. The entire time he was recounting what happened I was screaming at myself internally. How the heck do I forget all that?! Just how reckless is my drunk self to even think about going into a deathmatch with a known prodigy and exposing two kinds of magic that was not known before this. I am insane.

I blame you my mystery man, everything that happened was your fault. You knew about my problem with alcohol and yet you do this to me. Sure you did help me catch the culprit like you said you would but it was not necessary to involve the drunken Naoko into the mix.

“That being said, you left the arena with me to discuss the course of investigation and afterwards you collapsed on this couch and there was no more waking you. I thought I might as well let you sleep the rest of the night since you have done almost everything already.”

“Ah, thank you very much for explaining guild master; I will be staying low for a while now. This is bound to get blown beyond all expectations; I know it and I want to be not in the center of attention.”

“I’m afraid that will be impossible, seeing that I would very much like to increase your
rank at the guild. It is quite obvious from yesterday that you are not on a level of a D-rank adventurer. Also, I would like to use my power as a guild master and appoint you directly to B-rank.”

A B-rank so soon after getting a promotion for D-rank, that is unexpected. Also wouldn’t this cause uproar at the guild? No way, I want to lay low.

“Is it possible to decline?”

“Sure but wouldn’t it be better to take more interesting requests?”

“Not interested in that. I am certain that I can reach it normally in time. Why rush, it is not about the goal, but the adventure, don’t you agree?”

“In that case I will promote you to C-rank, this will allow for designated requests and give you more options regarding choosing work. I will not back down on this!”

I could sense his determination and unwillingness to compromise further so I just handed him my guild card. This will be hard to hide from others, I’m certain that it will be announced since I was certain it was a record time to reach C-rank and there is a board that keeps track of best times. Apologizing for all the trouble and thanking him for promotion I finally left the office.
Things were about to become troublesome I fear.
