CHAPTER 49: ENTERING THE ROYAL CASTLE

“Naoko-chan it seems our trip is done. We will be staying for a few days before going back to Orzak. Once you return be prepared I will be taking that 20 gold back.”

We were lined up to enter the city. There was no such thing as special entrance for nobles, everyone outside royalty had to be checked before entering the city. This was to ensure no criminals pass easily.

“That will be hard Odi-san. I’m currently abstaining from drinking. Nothing good happens when I drink. I think you understand.”

“Just you wait. We all say that. And then the weekend comes…”

I heaved a sigh, it’s true that adventurers liked to celebrate no matter the occasion. It’s your birthday, let’s drink! It’s a national holiday, let’s drink! You finished a request, let’s drink! It is a dangerous job, but overall it pays well so they can afford it.

After two long hours of waiting we finally reached the gate. Getting off the horse felt amazing but my entire body was sore from the long ride.

“Please give me your IDs, purpose of visit and report all items you are carrying.”

Before I could say anything Earl-sama left the carriage and took charge of talking to the guard.

“Here, we are transporting a prisoner to be trialed and as we were in quite the hurry we could only travel light to save up on space and speed.”

That liar, he still had several barrels of food and drinks in my inventory. I bet he is avoiding paying taxes for all that. Aren’t you worried about state treasury? You’re a noble for heaven’s sake.

“Earl Orzak-sama! Welcome, we were informed to escort you to the castle as soon as you arrive.”

“Yes, yes but first let us pass.”

The Earl-reentered the carriage and luckily the guard didn’t bother to check inside since both Ichi and Nii were there. The rest passed as well, however when it came to my turn…

“I’m sorry but I cannot allow someone with a fake ID pass through. I’m afraid I will have to arrest you, please don’t resist.”

WHAT?! How did you conclude this ID is fake? It is an official guild card, only I can use it. It has my information, just why did you say it is fake?

“It’s not a fake. Why do you make wild assumptions?”

“Little girl, no matter how I look there is no way you are 17 years old, even less so a C-rank adventurer. I don’t know how you tricked your companions but I will not allow you to get away.”

That hit a nerve, I could feel a vein popping on my head. Calling me a little girl and denying me entrance, I’ll show you exactly who I am and what I am capable of doing.

“I can vouch for her, that is her real age, although C-rank is wrong, should be B-rank at the least. After all she was the one that defeated Soaring Flame Princess in a single attack.”

The Earl poked out his head and spoke up.

“EH? She did? Please excuse my rudeness. Naoko-san.”

“It’s fine… I can pass, right?”

“Yes no problem, two guards will accompany you to the castle.”

I entered the city at last, from this moment on half of my request was completed. Volt-san and Odi-san received their payment and per agreement, I paid them additional 10 gold for letting me keep all the monster corpses. I bid them farewell and proceeded to go to the castle accompanying the Earl and the guards.

The castle was sitting upon a hill overlooking the city below it. Its high walls and towers only added to its majestic feel. Looking at it I was reminded of European castles from history books. I never thought I’d be able to see something like this. Upon entering the courtyard I could see numerous plants and trees that were carefully tended to as well as several statues decorating the yard.

While I was still immersed in my surroundings we made a stop in front of one of the buildings. A person was waiting there, greeting us as soon as we arrived.

“Earl Orzak I welcome you to Kapitalia. Thank you for your hard work in bringing Duke Loren here. I will be in charge of him from now on. Oh, what’s this, you seem to have another prisoner, who is he?”

“Thank you for welcoming us Prime Minister, from what we learned he is a mercenary and was hired to kill us all. His name is Sotou and we heard there is a bounty on his head along with two other that are already dead. Interrogating him might give us more answers. Also if he misbehaves just call this girl here, that will calm him down.”

No, don’t call for me, don’t even think about me. I don’t plan on getting involved with this anymore. The only reason I am still here is because this is a request. And the Earl is holding my bears hostage most of the time.

“Heh, I assume she is the one that uncovered the truth behind Irina-chan. Somehow you seem younger than I expected. You also look like one of the Heroes, tell me are your ancestors related to past heroes?”

“You could say I have Japanese roots. Prime Minister I will leave the Duke and this thug in your capable hands. Thank you for welcoming us, even though you must have been busy.”

“It is not a problem, Earl you and your servants can stay at the room in the eastern wing. Four rooms have been prepared for the five of you.”

Five of us? Does that mean I get to stay at the castle as well? Whoa I will finally have somewhat similar treatment that the rest of the heroes received. I can die happy right now.

While I was following behind Earl I could almost feel myself skipping. Upon entering my designated room I jumped onto the bed which had soft bedding and smelled like spring. Ah, c’est la vie. For the next seven days that I have free I plan on exploring this wonderful city to the fullest.
