CHAPTER 64 – THE TOURNAMENT BEGINS

The mansion is way too big I need to do something about it. Oh, and I should probably do something about all those adventurers that are stuck being my underlings. Since it was Thanatos-sama that placed this curse on them, I don’t think it would be that easy to remove it as I did with Irina’s Black Hand mark which was done while I was drunk. But at the very least, that thing was placed by a human and not a god. With nothing better to do, I decided to sleep off the rest of the day in preparation for tomorrow.

The tournament was scheduled to start at noon to accommodate as many people as possible. Thanks to that, I had some free time in the morning which I used to head out of the city and kill some wolves in hopes to get [Dual Wielding] skill, but no such thing happened. Feeling disappointed I returned to the city and immediately headed for the arena.

“Your name, age, race and class.”

“Maeda Naoko, seventeen, human, Magic Swordsman. I was wondering how many entries were there this time around.”

The person looked through the list and seemed to have been surprised when he looked at me again.

“My apologies Viscountess for not recognizing you. It says here you are entering the fight as well, is that correct?”

“Yeah, I should have applied yesterday, I think.”

“Y-yes no problem, so far over six hundred people applied, but we are expecting more to come today. We are limiting it to a thousand so applying yesterday was a smart move. Realistically, there should be about eight hundred.”

So many? If they go with knockout system it will take 10 rounds to reach the finals. This ought to be easy enough. As long as there isn’t a weird round like Free-For-All or something like that which will cause chaos and mayhem, I won’t have any trouble.

I was led to a waiting room where others gathered. I didn’t want to stand out and simply observed all these people that might be my opponents. I need to make sure not to underestimate any of them. Old, young, women, men… I shouldn’t judge any of them based on appearance.

Most participants were men between 20 and 40 by my estimate which was what I expected. Over time, the room started to get filled up and with that my plan to remain unnoticed failed miserably, as a group of my devoted underlings took notice of me.

“Honorable Boss, it is an honor to have you participate in this tournament, please do not go easy on us once we meet in battle and show us your true strength.”

At first, it was only one person then whole wave of them arrived in front of me and greeted me with a full 90° bow which naturally attracted the attention of everyone else in the room.

“Shush, can’t you see that I am trying to keep a low profile. And stop with that greeting, it’s embarrassing.”

“Honorable Boss, that would be impossible. Only the one that put on this spell can break it, but if you ask any of us, having a cute leader like you is not that bad at all.”

Urgh! Stupid Thanatos, why did he do this to me? I still don’t know everything that happened after the heroes left. I just hope I ended up protecting my lips from all those
adventurers. Soon, the bell sounded that indicated noon and the door to the battleground area opened up.

“Welcome dear citizens to this tournament made in order to celebrate the instatement of my brother Edward as a territorial Duke and to show everyone the might of this country. We are strong and this time we have all twelve heroes participating, as well as my dearest son Vitou, The Rogue Earl Disappearing Demon, Earl Worshire the Golden Hammer and Count Mirez the Nimble Sharpshooter.”

Holy smokes…. The crowd counted in thousands and hearing all these names they went wild. I recognized the names as those people I insulted while the drunk Nao was in charge. But I had no idea they were this popular. It appears I agitated some very strong enemies that day.

“We have full thousand participants, a new record for an unofficial tournament. A lot of prominent people from the kingdom and adventurers’ guild have joined us. Now let’s present the rewards for the winner and the runner up.”

An armor stand with crimson armor was rolled onto the podium where the king stood. I could immediately feel my mouth drooling upon seeing it. Two more weapons were brought out but those were unimportant.

“That armor is mine!”

I mumbled out and immediately I earned quite the number of glares from those around me. I decided to inspect it and sure enough it was epic ranked equipment.

[Valkyrie armor] RANK: Epic
An armor created by the High Elves from the finest silk cloth. It has the sturdiness of metal but remains as light as cloth. It allows the user to connect with the spiritual realm and gives the blessings of the elements.
*[Victory cry] – Sends a soothing wave to all standing next to the wearer and eases their minds slightly

“Now to explain the main event today. You will be divided into three groups; blue, red
and green and given special weapons. The goal is to eliminate your enemies. The last sixteen in each group standing will proceed to the next round.”

Oh, a free for all round. I can already see that this will turn ugly soon. A thousand people in a large mess, a perfect formula for a disaster.

“To assure fairness, fifty judges will be spread out throughout the arena, all distinguished members from Magic Research Department. Let’s commence this festival of fighting.”

The crowd cheered at King’s words while the competitors all retreated to waiting room, where we were equipped with rubber knives, swords, arrows and pellets. According to explanation they were all filled with paint infused with magic which reacts to the suits that we will be wearing. I do wonder if I could find a loophole to exploit this fact. It is time for a huge paintball fight.
