CHAPTER 72 – SEMIFINALS BEGIN

As soon as the quarterfinal matches were over I was informed about my next opponent. It turned out to be Earl Orzak, I was kinda expecting this to be the result. He is one of the people I really wanted to battle. I want to see how it is to go against someone using the space magic. I really felt bad about Hii-chan, he was an opponent that was defeated. I just hope that he didn’t lose too badly.

If I were to say, the most dangerous people I met in this world are, in order; My mystery man, Earl Orzak and Blink-san from Cerberus party. I could not determine the strength of the Crown Prince but from what I saw in his matches, he was slightly weaker than the Earl and Blink-san.

Because the Earl is such a strong opponent, I need to think of a way to defeat him. Since he can teleport and without much cost, he can easily evade all my attacks both physical and magic. From my observations, the only thing I can do is go for is the counterattack and small margin that exists between two teleports. If I can catch him that way there may be a way to defeat him. But first and foremost, I need to do something about my high mana expenditure using Blink. If my conjecture is correct, the Earl doesn’t use much mana because his agility and dexterity are high enough so the burden of magic lessens.

I opened my status to distribute the unspent skill points when I noticed a small addition to my skills. So this is the gift that the elemental was speaking of.

The [Thunder Resistance] skill was self explanatory but I was more interested in the other skill I have gained: [Thunderclad]. Upon inspecting it with [Heaven’s eye] I learned it was a sort of a defensive skill that would cover my body with electricity and jolt away anyone that touches me. This skill does not have levels, so it should be rather high tiered. I don’t know how strong the electricity is, but I will make sure to experiment with it in the future. But this really came at a good time since I didn’t have any good defensive skills.

Running and jumping up and down the room I tried to adjust to the sudden change in the strength. I didn’t want to look like a complete fool in the arena because I was unaccustomed to my new strength, but luckily such sudden change is not something I have experienced for the first time that is why it didn’t take too long to get used to it.

Pulling out a list of papers from my inventory I read about all the information my underlings have gathered about Earl Orzak in the past two days. He is the type of person that rarely goes on the offensive and usually relies on counterattacking by exploiting opponents openings and then strikes them down with overwhelming speed and precision. Knowing about his style, I could only hope to be able to counter his counter with my own otherwise things will not turn out pretty. I had a feeling that this competition will truly be a contest of speed and reaction. I even considered using dual swords for this battle, but gave up on the idea since the extra weight will make me slower. Upon some more consideration, I decided to use Amethyst. It was lighter than metal swords and much sharper. I thought that if a blacksmith couldn’t tell that it was a legendary ranked weapon then it will be safe to use it in front of everyone.

“Viscountess Maeda-sama, please follow me onto the stadium. The semifinal matches are about to begin.”

One of the people working at the arena came to get me. It still felt weird to be addressed as a Viscountess. Acknowledging him, I followed behind him. I really wished I had some fancy or powerful outfit to wear as I enter the stage. I bet that would leave quite an impression on everyone present.

Stepping onto the stage, I could feel the excitement in the air. This was perfect, in this place I can truly shine bright. The sun had set below the high walls of the arena and the soft light was ideal to fight in. These small things were all giving me confidence in being able to fight on even grounds with Earl Orzak. The seats in the audience area were filled to the brim with even more people standing behind the arranged seated area. It would seem that half the residents arrived to watch the matches.

Crown Prince, Earl Orzak, Ishikawa Taichi and I all stood one next to other below the King’s viewing area. Since this was the semifinals he would be the one to announce the beginning of the matches.

“Ladies and gentlemen, dear citizens and friends I welcome you all to enjoy tonight’s matches between our contestants: The Disappearing Demon, Earl Toriwa Orzak and a dark horse, Elemental Empress Naoko Maeda, and between valiant hero Ishikawa Taichi and our very own Crown Prince, Vitou von Elicia.”

An explosion of cheers and claps, this kind of enthusiasm is not something I have experienced before. Even inside the game where I had some popularity such atmosphere could not be emulated properly. It made my heart flutter with excitement.

“First to take the stage are Earl Orzak and Viscountess Maeda, but before they do I will take this opportunity to announce tomorrow will be a festival to celebrate the ending of the tournament so make sure to come by tomorrow and cheer for your favorites.”

Seriously!? Just how carefree are the people in this world, this entire week has been one huge festival and now you’re telling me that the festival will only be tomorrow. Sometimes I wonder how this kingdom can function when every day is like a holiday.

“Orzak-san, Maeda-san please get ready for your battle, others please give them some space.”

“Naoko-chan I knew I would come to fight you sooner or later, do not disappoint me now.”

“Earl-sama it seems are thoughts are the same. Tonight I will stop your legend and create my own. Prepare yourself.”

This is it. Everything depended on me now. If I could outrun him or not, my victory depended on this. Only one person can reach the finals and I plan for that person to be me.
