CHAPTER 82: STRENGTH OF A NEW GENERATION

***ERIK’S POV***

My eldest son Vitou is hailed as the strongest magician on this entire land. Nobody could ever match with him in battle. Ever since he was young he could learn many things with such ease that he was praised by countless people that were brought to teach him. My son is truly a genius.

When I decided to name him as the Crown Prince none of the nobles protested the idea, in fact the all happily agreed saying it was only natural for such a decision to be made. After all, having a ruler such as Vitou would definitely lead towards the kingdom’s development and stability. This was announced to the public on his thirteenth birthday.

For the next three years, I had him learn everything about leading the people and governing the kingdom. He was like a sponge absorbing everything I imparted on him, if he would continue like that I was certain that I would be able to retire in peace and live out the rest of my life leisurely and the kingdom that Vitou leads would truly be at its most glorious moment thus far.

That is why on the day he turned seventeen, I was stunned shocked with his request to go out and travel the land as an adventurer. I had no idea where all this was coming from and was very reluctant to let him go, but he was so stubborn about this and was not accepting no for an answer.

In the end I had to let him go, but only under the promise that he would go with several other people. Luckily he agreed immediately and introduced the rest of his party. They were all important people; the son of the Viscount Orzak; a peculiar young boy born without magic, but a sharp mind. The other one was the daughter of the Church’s High Priest and the second son of the King of Vilikis who was staying in Kapitalia for his studies.

Together they were an odd bunch, I didn’t even know when or how Vitou got acquainted with them, to a point where he was willing to travel with them for a long time. To let me have a peace of mind, he I added two personal guards to watch over them and help out.

On the day that they set off, Vitou finally told me why he was so adamant on going out to experience the world. At that moment, I was willing to wait no matter how long and keep the kingdom safe for him. He said that he deemed himself unfit to rule the people without first meeting them and learning everything there is to his people from commoners to nobles. Only by doing that, would he be able to be a good ruler. I was so proud of him at that moment.

For five years he travelled Elicia and Vilikis freely and among the citizens his party was slowly becoming a legend. They were called the Heroes of this world and were loved by all.

They were able to stop all enemies and solve all mysteries. The perception people had of adventurers was slowly being changed, instead of calling them jobless drunks, they started thinking the adventurers were noble fighters that are willing to help anyone.

Afterwards, you could also hear rumors of other great adventurers and their parties among which Cerberos was one of the more prominent ones. Those news made me both sad and happy as my other son was there, sadly he could never do anything well, at least he was not embarrassing me outside.

It was at the end of the fifth year away from the castle that a tragedy struck and a horde of monsters invaded from the north. Things like that sometimes happen when there is a big trouble brewing and it is a sign that we might need to ask the gods to summon the Heroes, but an invasion on this scale was never seen before and it scared a lot of people saying that the end is near and that gods are angry.

I had deployed the army and marched immediately to stop the rampaging monsters only to be greeted by the sight of our victory. Listening to all the soldiers and adventurers present on sight, I heard about the feats my son and his party did alongside others. I was very proud and upon returning to Kapitalia I rewarded all those that stood out, but Vitou remained unnaturally quiet and somewhat unhappy despite his victory.

“Father, I have seen my kingdom and met its people and I fear that against such a formidable foe I cannot protect them.”

I was startled, we just won the battle with minimal casualties and he was saying such odd things.

“My son, what did you see out there to make you feel that way?”

“Father, it is true that we won by defeating countless enemies, but there is one thing you don’t know. The true hero of that day wasn’t me or anyone in my party, not even among the adventurers that answered the distress call. The person I am talking about was able to kill three times the amount of monsters we did, simply by using some weird magic I have no knowledge of. When I tried talking to him he didn’t bother to acknowledge me at all and only after a while he said something before leaving. He said I should relay his words to you and to always keep them in mind.”

“A time of darkness will come; beware to not stir the sleeping devil for those that oppose it will know not of hope or salvation. Your guardians will bring it here and its might will come to be unmatched.”

Those words sounded more like a prophecy to me and that is why I decided to call the heroes. It took us almost two years to prepare everything before the ritual could be completed and then to everyone’s surprise all twelve heroes were called. It came as both a relief and a worry.

Since all twelve gods sent their representative, they would definitely protect this world, but what kind of danger is approaching to make all the gods take action?

Soon after the heroes went on their adventure to practice, I began hearing about an unusual person that was rising in popularity among adventurers, a swordsman and a magician at the same time. I thought she might have been someone of a noble rank, but upon learning she was a commoner, I realized there was no need to pay so much attention.

And yet this commoner became too powerful to be left alone. After the trial ended, I knew that she had to join the royal family so I can have her as a weapon against the devil. If not, I would rather she is dead than falling into enemies claws. That is why I want Vitou to marry her as soon as possible.

And now that the tournament is over, I was certain, only someone like her is worthy to bear the royal heir. I looked towards the broken arena and the empty space left there before looking up to the sky above the arena walls.

This time around I can say for sure that the new generation can take care of this mess. There is no need for the old man like me to go out and fight. I looked at those gathered at the arena and began calming them down and organizing everything so that nobody gets hurt.
