CHAPTER 88: BACK HOME

“Took you long enough, if you hadn’t come by tomorrow, I would have left alone. As you are sneaking around I assume you want to avoid the King and Vitou. Man, they really are throwing a fit, the last time there was this much noise was when Vitou announced he was planning on becoming an adventurer. You sure know how to make things lively Naoko-chan.”

I had barely entered the room and he was already shoving his entire luggage to me. I had no idea when he noticed me, but since he was able to, I could realize that earlier, during our match, he definitely didn’t go all out against me. Otherwise there is no way I would be able to escape his attack. Honestly speaking it hurt a little to know that.

“I am sorry about that, but aren’t you planning to tell the King that I am escaping?”

“Heck no! I am standing on Vitou’s side this time around. Since you know that man I don’t want to disturb him. He alone could wipe out an entire country if he wanted to, so that is why I am sneaking away alongside you. Who knows, he might even think of me in a positive light and not bother me for as long as I live? Anyways, I already sent my guards away and in the eyes of the public I am not in Kapitalia anymore.”

What on earth is he talking about? Why does it sound like he is also running away and hiding by sending the guards ahead of time? Feeling defeated, I simply stuffed his belongings inside my inventory and was about to head towards the stables when he reached out and stopped me.

“What do you think you’re doing? You have [Blink], which means there is no need for horses. That is way too slow. Follow me.”

“What do you plan on doing? Using [Blink] can only get you so far, not to mention the extreme mana cost for such a small distance. I don’t think it is a smart idea, I would be exhausted by the time we barely escape the city.”

“Mana cost? Your [Blink] needs mana? I never noticed that with me whenever I used it. Could it be it is different magic, but it shouldn’t be, as it feels the same when I use it?”

How cruel is this world, if my theory is right his agility stat must be ridiculously high to be able to neglect the mana cost for the magic. But even if that is true and there is an unlimited amount of times he can cast [Blink], the range of it still remains the problem.

“Yeah it costs a lot of mana to cast it. I can regenerate mana easily, but it will still force me to stop from time to time. Well, with more points in agility the cost should drop, but that is not the main problem, how do you plan to deal with range limit of the spell?”

“Lucky for you, that is something I resolved a long time ago. Listen well, I will teach you something great I learned from many years of experience. When you are standing still the range you can move to is roughly fifty meters. This is probably what you are worried about, so let me tell you this secret. Just by walking that range will jump up to about a hundred meters. Try to run a little and it will double the distance again. Going into full out sprint will make the distance go up to 500 meters. I bet you didn’t know that, right?”

Is this for real? How did he discover such rules? I looked at him in worship, this is really precious information and he was willing to give it out for free, Earl-sama, I respect you. This really made sense to me since the cost of [Blink] was related to the agility value, the range being affected with speed is only logical.

“So you plan on teleporting while running at full speed, it is faster than a horse, but wouldn’t we cause a commotion if others saw us appearing and disappearing alongside road?”

“No, we won’t be running, besides you can’t reach such high speed with running along, we need something more extreme. Come follow me. I will show you the best way to travel.”

Intrigued with his explanation, I followed behind him, but instead of going out of the castle he kept going up the staircase after staircase. Thinking about everything he told I suddenly had a terrible feeling. He couldn’t be thinking of that could he?

“Umm.. Earl-sama, you surely aren’t thinking about jumping from the tower or something
like that to gain more speed, are you?”

“Oh, your head isn’t that bad after all. You are correct, we will use the speed of falling down to travel far in one go. I’m surprised you noticed that when falling down you gain speed the longer you fall. I want to know the exact value but it is hard to measure it.”

“If the mass of this world is anything like the Earth, then that number should be 9,81 meters per second per every second. You should thank sir Isaac Newton since he did the math before.”

As soon as I said that, I realized I made a blunder. Only the heroes and the King knew I wasn’t from this place originally and was also brought here from Earth. However, from what I just said I basically exposed myself in front of the Earl-sama.

“Hou, now that is something I didn’t expect to find out. Naoko-chan you are full of secrets and yet this is something that makes so much sense. I should have realized it sooner..”

He stopped walking and looked at me up and down. How could I be this careless? I can’t believe that I gave myself away because of such a stupid matter. I shouldn’t have listened so well in class.

“Please don’t spread it around.”

“We shall see, anyways we are here now. From this place we will take a running start, jump up and Blink upwards and then start falling through the air for exactly seven seconds. Take a good look at that tower in the distance; that is our destination. It should be about two to three thousand meters away.”

I looked at the tower he was pointing at. This is one of the towers used to light the emergency signal and inform everyone that a threat is in the kingdom. I stormed over the idea the Earl just explained and the more I thought about it the more it made sense to me. I guess I will become as eccentric as the Earl-sama today.

“You are crazy to even think about this thing, but then again so am I for actually doing this and not going the other way.”

Right now, I was very grateful to the fact that the Earl is alive, since that means he
already did this many times and survived. I can trust him and follow his orders. Letting the Earl go first I took a deep breath and ran after him and just like he explained I jumped, blinked upwards and let myself free fall towards the ground. Upon counting to seven I used Blink once again while looking at the tower. It was only a few seconds but the distance travelled was huge.

“Okay now to repeat that until we reach back home. After you Naoko-chan.”

That evening I found myself standing in front of the main gate of Town of Orzak. I couldn’t believe this, a trip that took so many days before, was now shortened to several hours. I bid the Earl goodbye and told him I would collect my reward tomorrow and moved towards the Azure Dragon Inn where, hopefully, my bed is waiting for me. I am finally home.
