CHAPTER 93: TEMPLE OF BOUNTIFUL HARVEST

By the time I got to temple, I was soaking wet. The rain was falling so heavily that I was wondering how nothing was flooded by now. Even as I was approaching the temple, I had a hard time seeing it through the rain. It was definitely raining more heavily near the structure.

The style of the temple reminded me of old Egyptian buildings that I saw on TV with overly large pillars supporting it. The entire structure was also leading underground, it was no wonder that it was not discovered by now. Even the aboveground part was half buried and in a dense forest. Before setting deeper inside, I needed to do something.

“Come elementals, wind and light, I offer you my mana in exchange for your help. Wind, clear the air in this building, light please show me the way.”

“Ay ay captain.”

“Naonao, this will be a piece of pie.”

Ever since my elemental affection reached 90% and I gained [Blessed by Spirits] title, whenever I call any of the elementals all types tend to flock. Also when I am idle and not doing anything, I can catch them stealing mana from me. Technically, I could deny them access to my mana, but since they take barely noticeable amount and I regenerate it almost instantly I mostly just let them be. The only downside is that it is always somewhat noisy around me.

Tuning out their bickering as background noise, I began my exploration of the temple interior. I was looking for anything that might give me an explanation of the origin of this temple and maybe even what caused the rain to fall, but sadly there were neither painting nor drawings on the walls of the temple. I was also trying to keep an eye on what might have been an archive room or even a treasury. After all any and all books could turn out priceless.

Being underground, I soon lost all sense of time passing. I was simply going from room to room and slowly gaining some loot, but it was nothing really precious, a pendant here and a ring or bracelet there. A lot of things I found were already destroyed with the passage of time and couldn’t even be sold as scrap metal, so I left them behind.

The entire place was huge. It was like there was an entire town underground with how many rooms I went through. And the whole place was built in different levels. Upon going down another set of stairs, I found myself in a large open area. Even with light elementals shining brightly I couldn’t see the end of the room. I asked for more light elementals to gather, just so I would be able to see the whole room. It was bigger than the guild building in Kapitalia, but sadly it was empty. There was nothing in this room, not even a chair or table. The walls were bare, even the huge pillars didn’t look as imposing in this space.

“Earth elementals, can you sense anything in this room? Please take a careful look.”

Despite it being empty and plain, I had a feeling something about this place was special. This was a sacred room in some way, I was sure of it. Because the moment I entered, I could feel something great and powerful residing near here, it is just that I could neither hear nor see what that something is. I even used [Aura Detection] and [Presence Detection] to highest ability I could, to try and sense this thing.

“Nao there is nothing here. Completely empty.”

“What does the daughter of death want with an old woman like myself”

I jumped at the sound of an unknown voice. Talk about jump scare, I turned around but couldn’t see anything. Staying on guard, I called out to the voice.

“That is rather an unusual way to address someone. May I know who I am speaking to?”

“You enter my temple and dare talk back to me. Humankind sure grew bolder over these long years that have passed.”

Her temple, does that mean she is a priestess or a goddess? A shape began materializing in front of me. It looked like a middle aged woman with curly hair and a plump build, but overall lovely and beautiful.

“I mean no disrespect, but with the passage of time this place had become forgotten and only recently it was discovered again. I came inside to look for the cause of the rain that doesn’t stop falling.”

“I am the one making the rain fall. Until the people of this land bring me thanks for the rain I brought them, I will not let it stop. The dry times are coming and this rain will ensure the good harvest.”

“In that case I will give you my thanks. The rain that had fallen on the ground shall help nourish the growing plants and provide new life.”

“A lone thank you from a single child will not do.”

“But I was sent by the people from this area.”

“If you really are the one to represent them, you should be able to do a small task to prove your worth. If I listened to any child that came by, I would be called a foolish goddess.”

This will not end well, I could see it already. This ‘small task’ will definitely not be small, but sadly I don’t have much option, do I? I sighed and nodded agreeing to do her task.

“Very well… beneath this room there is a chamber, inside which there is a deep pool of water. All you have to do is dive inside and bring out a locket that fell in there. Only with that locket I can stop the rain from falling.”

So it is not a matter of her not wanting to stop the rain, but rather not being able to stop it. Since that is the case, I guess my only way out is to get that locket. It is a good thing I was the first one to come here. If others found this place before me, I don’t think I would be able to search for the locket in peace. Plus I had elementals that can help me look for this locket in water. I guess this won’t be any trouble after all. There was just one thing I didn’t count on. The ‘pool’ the ghost mentioned is by no means a pool of water. It was a friggin’ underground lake the size of the entire temple.

“You’ve got to be kidding me!”
