Chapter 246: Installation

The Earthkin were extremely stimulated by the spider nest that I put there in place of a screen, the floor made of the giant tree, the spirit lights and the window frame.

I 【Teleport】them here, but the moment they saw my handiwork, all eyes gravitated toward me — it felt uncanny. They took keen interest in the spirit lights and raved about it, but they didn’t approve of the design.

Well, the lights are fashioned the way they are because of my【Manufacturing Ability】after all… Really, experience should be used hand in hand with a stylistic style or else the finished product would still end up lacking, huh…

They exuberantly discussed whatever worked and what wouldn’t while measuring here and there — really boisterous. I got the urge to summon the cold-sensitive Earth-kin living here, but yeah, I shouldn’t. I took the representatives here on the condition that they shouldn’t leave the tower after all.

If the folks themselves didn’t know where they were, then it’s fine even if they were asked anything. But then, they could see the sea from the window and it’s hot so that’s already a dead give-away that they’re in the South. Well, these folks are the type to say ‘Come what may, I don’t care, bring it on, no need to care about the details!’, so I guess it’ll be alright.

I requested that they not make it too gaudy or flashy, then sent them back to the Northern Continent. They’re an ebullient crowd, and they moved jauntily around a lot so it felt like I was being jostled in a crowd while at a festival. It was tiring, but I felt my spirits soar too.

Alright, what else was on my agenda? Ah, right, the bough.

「X-Stick. 」
「What’s up, Master? 」
I took X-Stick from his case that I had on my back. The 20cm bough stretched and X-Stick popped his head out.

「Can you give me a bough? 」
「Ou! 」
As soon as he replied, part of the thin branch wrapped around X-Stick’s lower-half (?) extended and snapped.

It transformed mid-air before landing on my hand, and what appeared was a branch with a diameter of about 4cm with 2 twigs protruding left and right just above its center. It also had two dark knots — what’s this, a haniwa?* It really resembled the ‘dancing’ figures with smooth expressionless, no, simple faces.

What to do? It felt as if I’m going to be scolded if I decorated this. **
「Master, what do you think of my Bough? Will you decorate it or something? 」
「Yeah. Uh, it’s so you. 」
Ack, X-Stick’s eyes were sparkling with anticipation.

「I’ll also get one from Khan, so I’ll do both together. 」
「Ou! 」
Sorry, forgive me for running away.

— The bough I got from Khan was an exquisite, faintly glowing one with two branches, a white silver one and a black iron one. Argh, what the heck, Khan! You’re such a burly guy so why are you giving me such a delicate bough, huh!? If you only gave me a fat something then I’d be able to hide Haniwa behind it! What should I do with this huh!? No matter how I decorate these boughs, the Haniwa is sure to stand out!!

If you only gave me a horse haniwa….! Argh, get a grip, Jean, that won’t be a bough anymore!!

I secretly sneak into 『Fae’s Bough』. Alright, nobody’s here. Are they done with the pedestal? The doors of 『Fae’s Bough』opens to a garden surrounded by corridors. Several narrow waterways that are either still bare earth or lined with stones also run through the garden.

Hmm, maybe I should make it more like a small stream or brook? That way there will be areas with strong currents that spray, and places with water flowing gently without creating waves. Seedlings that still look unstable also grow in several places, probably planted by Charles. It’ll definitely turn into a lush garden once they grow..

A building with a few rooms stands at the very back of the garden. Huge 『Fae’s Bough』’s have resident priests permanently stationed in them, and one of their tasks is to exorcize the mischievous spirits possessing people. It seems somebody will be living here to manage the place just in case.

One of the rooms in the building doesn’t have walls, supported by pillars only, and it opens into the garden. There’s a gorgeous basin, with flowers floating on the surface of the water. We can sell the water if more spirits come here supposedly, but I think it has the same quality as the water flowing in the canals of the entire island. Plus, the most effective water can be sourced from the pool that accumulates in the tower room.

When spirits blend with the flowing water, the fine ones easily disappear. Even those that remain will huddle together and end up becoming spirits of splashes or something like that, and the water will lose its effect. Thus, the best place to scoop will be the still waters with lots of spirits submerged in them.

The room with the basin has a huge door at its very end. It’s locked and no one would be able to open it on their own. Well, I have the key and I don’t have any problems with it even if I’m alone. I gently press it open and quietly slip in. By the way, it’s designed to fully open during festivals so that people can see the bough displayed on the pedestal behind it.

A thin cloth hangs from the ceiling of the room with a stunning display of reliefs. A thick, heavy-looking deep blue cloth with a crest depicted on it also hangs right in the center of the wall facing the door, and the pedestal in question stands in front of it.

I wonder why they worked so hard on this, when they’re planning to put a fake here in the first place. Ahhh, the Haniwa will really, really stand out at this rate. Huh, I give up, let’s just make it simple.

I station Haniwa in the middle, then position Khan’s bough so that the two branches kinda entwine it, with the black and white base placed behind it.

Yeah, that’s it, with white and black in tow, it will be the most powerful —

「Whoa!!! 」
Oy, Haniwa, your eyes are glowing!? Ah, not eyes, knots!!

Uh… What to do if Haniwa starts dancing in the night? Oh well, I’m done decorating it so let’s just leave Soleil in charge of it. She can even rearrange it if she wants.

I try to pretend I didn’t see it despite being the one placing it on the pedestal. I wonder when they’ll notice it here? If it demonstrates its ability to summon spirits before they notice then she’ll probably give up.

I firmly believe that Soleil is a woman who values the end result rather than the means!

T/N:

Dancing Haniwa figures 😀 They’re usually made out of clay, and were used in funeral rites and placed on the tombs. I remember reading a Japanese manga collection of horror stories with a cute Haniwa character featured on every single chapter as a side character provided for comic relief when I was a kid, but I already forgot the title.

** I’m not sure if he’s going to be scolded for arbitrarily decorating a Spirit Bough, or if he found it sacrilegious to do that to a haniwa-looking thing as a Japanese guy. XD
