Chapter 183 – Part 2

Translation: Charlotte

When I returned to the hall where I fought the two Wendigos, I saw another party.
Wait, the party looked very familiar…

It was Guren’s party!

「Wait, what???」

I had a feeling my greeting made me out to be a bit of a fool.
They were just heading into the cave to do some hunting.

The time was 11:40 AM.
It was a good time indeed.
Just standing around while we chatted seemed like a bad idea, so I used Instant Portal to get us a place to sit.
While I was at it, I decided to have some lunch too.

「The Wendigos are nice quite nice prey, but really…」

「The Sasquatches?」

I recalled Obsidian and summoned Bunraku.
I got him to prepare me a meal.
While waiting for Bunraku to finish, I spent some time exchanging information with Guren.

Apparently, the branch I was heading towards led to a snowy field.
Not just that, it was in a neighbouring map.
I was going to have to walk all the way to N2W2, huh…
Guren’s party tried the path, but apparently they got ambushed by a Sasquatch on the way and got taken out.

「Anyway, about the event that’s past here…」

I made sure to provide Guren with some information too.
It was just a simple explanation of the fight that was still freshly ingrained in my mind.
Unfortunately, I didn’t take any screenshots…
All I could do was hope I conveyed my experiences properly to Guren.

「A warrior in full armour, yeah?」

「So it’s going to be a different type of tough enemy compared to the Wendigos…」

By the way…
Four of Guren’s party members were playing with Heather as we talked.
I understood how they were feeling.
It looked like Heather was looking for people to play with too.
Senki, on the other hand, sat quietly by himself.

After exchanging some more minor pieces of information, it was time for a lunch break.
Guren’s party provided part of the ingredients too, so Bunraku could make a proper feast for all of us.
We ate lunch together as we continued chatting.

After we finished eating, Guren’s party logged out for a short break before we left the Instant Portal.

「Well then, we’ll do our best to win the battle waiting for us.」

「Please do your best.」

And with that, we parted ways.
I didn’t really have to think much of it. As long as we were exploring and hunting in the same general area, we would cross paths again sooner or later.

After a while, I saw a branch in the cave in front of me.
The route to the right would mean backtracking even further. I couldn’t discount that route.
But that meant the route to the left was the one leading to the neighbouring map, huh.
If Guren was right, the cave should open up to a snowy field.
And on the way, there would be lots of Wendigos trying to stop me.

I was looking forward to seeing some new scenery.
I thought the cave would lead to the other side of the river, but I guess I was mistaken… I could look into that more some other time.

I recalled Bunraku and summoned Obsidian.
The neighbouring map…
It’s been a long time since I visited other maps…

The thought of that made dealing with the Rudy Bats a little easier.
The cave somehow getting narrower helped a lot too!
Not just area-of-effect attacks spells, but even wall spells were starting to become feasible to use against the Rudy Bats.
Thanks to that, I didn’t even have to deal with the poison status effect too often anymore either.

The same went for the Wendigos.
Fighting them was clearly a lot easier.
It was a lot easier for Senki to get up close and personal, pinning the Wendigos against the walls of the cave.
The terrain was objectively not that good, but Senki managed to turn it to his advantage somehow.
In any case, the route I was on was a very nice route to fight monsters on.
If only there were more monsters around, I would consider making it a more permanent hunting spot.
But unfortunately, there weren’t that many monsters. Using Call Monster only confirmed that for me.
What a pity.

The air was starting to feel chilly on my skin.
But all of my Summoned Monsters seemed to be doing just fine.
I took out my winter clothes and equipped them, and while I kept walking, cast Resist Ice on my whole team.
At some point, I saw a light at the end of the cave.

I was almost outside.

When I left the cave, a new sight was set before me.
It wasn’t exactly a snowy kingdom of any kind…
Guren was actually quite accurate in describing it… It was just a vast snowy field.
The weather looked cloudy, adding to that effect too.
Wait, no, I was mistaken.
It was snowing.
It wasn’t a blizzard, so that was nice, but it was still going to be quite tough.

I didn’t want to have to climb any mountains in this weather…
Just the thought of it was quite scary.

I was about to return into the cave for shelter before I noticed something out of the side of my eye.
When I turned around, it was already way too close for comfort. An ambush.
Neither Volff, nor Obsidian, nor Tigris were aware of its approach.
Of course, I didn’t notice anything either.
The first of my Summoned Monsters to get attacked was Senki.

A Wendigo?
A Sasquatch?

No, it was neither of them.

Silent Ermine Lv3
Demon Enemy Target Active
Battle Position: Ground, Snow Ice Attribute

Wait what, what kind of monster is this?
It’s so small! What’s an ermine supposed to be?
Looking at its outward appearance, it looked like a small, white, cute weasel.
But that wasn’t the main point. There was something else I was more concerned about.
There was a marker showing that Senki had fallen into a status abnormality.

The monster separated from Senki and dove back into the thick snow.
Where did it go?Volff completely lost sight of the Silent Ermine’s figure.
Even its smell disappeared along with its body into the snow.
It was all very confusing.
That was the only word I could use to describe it.I suppose I had no choice but to focus on intercepting its attacks.
I gripped my Black Rope in my two hands.
After steeling myself, I kept walking into the snowy field.
I got Volff to duck and hide in the snow as he followed along.

Come on.
Come on, Come on!

Not long afterwards…
They came.

The attack came from my side.
A furry mass shot itself at me.
Of course, it was far too fast for me to avoid it.
But in exchange, I wanted to try catching it.
As the monster tried to retreat back into the snow, I tossed my Black Rope at it.
It got caught on both its front legs and around its neck.
That was all I needed to tie it up.

The whole monster’s body was engulfed in flames.
And not long afterwards, it went down.

What’s this?
Why was it so weak?

AH, maybe the fire attacks had something to do with it.
Guren mentioned it in our small talk earlier.

Apparently, fighting Wendigos was easier when using weapons enhanced with Enchanted Fire.
That same effect may have played a part in how my Black Rope took down the Silent Ermine so easily.

《【Mental Reinforcement】 Level Up! 》

Well, a level-up was good and all…
But I first started by sticking my Survival Knife into the Silent Ermine’s body.
It didn’t drop anything.
I even had 【Disassembly】 active.

I pulled up a search engine using the in-game browser to figure out what kind of monster it was.
A stoat with a white coat of fur?
Oh! They were also quite cute! How could the GMs turn this cute thing into a monster!?

Oops. Almost forgot.
I had to check something else.
It had to be some sort of Abnormal Status Condition.

My own marker had another smaller marker overlapping it, indicating an abnormal status condition.
I checked it and saw that my AGI stat had fallen.
The effects of Resist Ice were still active…
But it looked like there was no getting around the abnormal status condition.
The Silent Ermines were actually a lot stronger than I anticipated…

I checked Senki and found the same status condition on him too.
But looking closer, I realised Senki’s status condition was different to mine.

Silenced… Did that mean the status condition was preventing Senki from speaking?

I tried to get Senki to howl or growl, but he couldn’t make any sounds whatsoever.
Oh dear…
That really was scary!
I pictured myself getting affected by the status condition…
The more I thought about it, the more terrifying it became.

I would definitely have to use Psycho Pod before proceeding any further.
I really wanted to avoid abnormal status conditions at any cost.

But besides that, was there any way for me to get rid of that status condition on Senki?
I tried using Dispel Magic.
The markers showing abnormal status conditions disappeared.
I also tried using Dispel Magic on myself.

The Silent Ermines were really dangerous…
But I was grateful for the measures I had to counter them.
I was also glad I managed to figure out all these important factors in the very beginning. I could step forward with heightened confidence.

After confirming that I was indeed in the N2W2 map, I decided to go back into the cave.
I wasn’t done exploring the whole cave, after all.
I wanted to know what would happen if I decided to take that right turn earlier.
I had to go myself in order to find out.

I backtracked in the cave until I reached the branch from earlier.
Returning from the snowy field, I was ambushed by Wendigo after Wendigo, but I didn’t run into any Sasquatches.
They were definitely the scariest monster in the cave.

But after some walking, I realised it wasn’t just going to be monsters in my way.
What I saw in front of me was something I had never seen in a cave before.

It was an underground lake.

It looked like some parts of the cave were submerged.
How was I going to get past here…?
The only options that came to mind would be to either swim or dive.

I tried using Flashlight.
The surface of the underground lake shone a bright green. It was truly beautiful.
It was very attractive in a strange way.

But I couldn’t keep staring at it for long.
In the next moment, the scenery in front of me was transformed to one under the water.

I tried struggling, but my hands couldn’t grasp anything.
Something was tangled around my leg.
The water above my head kept growing.
But I could still see the ball of light from Flashlight above the surface.

Something was pulling me to the bottom of the lake.
Was it a monster?

I looked to the bottom of the lake and spotted it.

Magic Waterweed Lv3
Demon Enemy Target Active
Combat Position: Underwater, Ground Water Attribute Tree Attribute

I see…
These kinds of monsters were prevalent too, huh…
The vines wrapped around my foot didn’t look like they would give up so easily.

As I struggled, I noticed I started breathing water into my lungs.
Is this how drowning feels?

Not long afterwards, I lost consciousness.
