Chapter 65

Translator: Charlotte Editor: Weasalopes

Author’s note: 「I tried cutting off the chapter at a nice part and ended up with a longer chapter.」

Fiona began fighting a group of four Branch Golems.
I could hear all of them casting spells.
Followed by the flashy lights and sounds from those spells.

But I had better things to do than just watch them fight.
Two Rush Fungi attacked me.

I told Senki to hold his position while I went for the attack.
I managed to throw and topple one of them. Jericho quickly held it down with one foot.
I needed to give Senki an example.

I grabbed the other Rush Fungus under its obscene-looking cap and pulled it from its body.
Next, I randomly put my hands on whatever was left at the top of its head.
I made sure I had a good grip before separating my hands and ripping the mushroom in two.
It wasn’t too difficult a process, but I used my feet too to get more force into the tearing process.
The mushroom was easily defeated.

Well, that was it.
Senki was alertly watching me.
That’s all. Try it out yourself.
I got Jericho to let go of the Rush Fungus under his foot.

Senki did it perfectly right from the start.

I wished I could have actual conversations with my Summon Monsters.
But even without words, I could still sort of understand what they were feeling.
Or at least that’s what I told myself.

We arrived at a room without monsters.
There was another party there, but they left as soon as we entered the room.
We could communicate by using the Whisper function, but talking normally felt so much nicer.

「How was it?」

「I got it!」

「I didn’t get anything.」

「Me neither.」

Looked like it was just Saki.

「I can learn【Tree Magic】now. It costs 5 Bonus Points, though.」

「That’s a little heavy…」

「Just as much as【Light Magic】and【Dark Magic】.」

「Are you going to learn it?」

「At least you already know what spells you’re going to get out of it.」

「I have an idea actually. Growing trees.」

「I wonder if that spell works on mushrooms too…」

「Even if it doesn’t work on mushrooms, I can still be a massive help to any farmer. I’m learning it.」

Fiona and Saki discussed it for a while, but it looked like Saki reached a decision.
I hadn’t been using it, but there was a spell that could speed up the growth of plants.
It would definitely be a good spell for any production job player, especially a farmer.

「Let’s get back on topic.」

「I wonder why I was the only one…」

「There must be something Saki is doing that the three of you aren’t.」

They started discussing the topic.
But they couldn’t reach a conclusion.
Looked like they were a little lost.

They tried comparing INT and SPI, the stats most affiliated with magic.
Out of the four of them, Saki was the lowest in both.
Just to be polite, I didn’t ask for the exact numbers, but it looked like Helga had the best stats.
It didn’t look like stats had anything to do with it.

Then what was the other condition?
The total number of times you used each spell?
It didn’t look like that was the case.
They tried out a lot of theories, but they couldn’t reach a solid conclusion.

「We’re just wasting time doing this, let’s try it again.」

And with that, their little meeting ended.
Another one of them might pick up the skill after fighting another group of monsters.
They were all hoping on that.
With that in mind, we all kept going.

Adele and Irina managed to take out the next group of three Branch Golems without any issues.
I managed to easily take care of a group of seven mushrooms that attacked us from behind.
Fiona and the others were clearly taken aback by my fighting style.
Jericho was calm, but Senki, Goki, and me were having the time of our lives ripping mushrooms in two.
Adele and Irina remained completely straight-faced.

Fiona and the others took on the next group of four Branch Golems.
Of course, they tried to use exclusively spells to take them out.
They defeated them without any major issues, but it didn’t look like they got the result they wanted.
I could tell from their facial expressions.

We arrived at another room without monsters.

「Guess that wasn’t it.」

「Ahh! It’s so frustrating being stuck…」

「We just don’t have enough information at the moment…」

Fiona, Saki and Fay started complaining at their situation.
They had been taking care of me for a while.
Looked like it was time for me to return the favour.

「How about we compare everyone’s stats with mine.」

「Is that really alright?」

It was taboo to show anyone outside of your party your skills and stats.
It was good manners to not ask even your party members.
I wondered why such a culture formed in this game.
Maybe it had something to do with the game allowing PK.
Maybe it was just a way to protect yourself.

Those were just a few things I learnt through my frequent chats with them.
I was just a solo player, so I didn’t have to worry about anyone killing me in my sleep.
I didn’t mind showing them.

「But that wouldn’t be fair.」

「I’ll show you my stats too, you want to see?」

「No, I really appreciate the way you feel, but I’m good.」

Fiona and Saki didn’t say anything else.
It wasn’t really something I had to know, I didn’t want to be nosy.

Well, that’s what I told myself, but in reality, I just didn’t want to know anything that might put me in a dangerous spot in the future.

「They’re my stats from a few days ago, so don’t worry about it.」

While telling them that, I sent Fiona a screenshot of my stats and spell list.
It was from right after I learnt【Ice Magic】.

Fiona sent my screenshots to everyone else.
The more information they had, the better.

Everyone stopped talking for a while.
Looked like everyone was reading over my stats on their own.
Likely comparing them to their own stats.

Someone was laughing.
It was Fay.

「You’ve been so thorough, there’s nothing I can do but laugh.」

「Too many skills!」

「About half of them are production job skills…」

「And【Speedcasting】?, 『Spell Archive』? What’s that?」

「That’s interesting too, but let’s focus on figuring out how to get the new spells!」

Reina yelled out something that brought everyone back on track.

「I feel like I get what’s going on…」

「Why did you take all the magic skills? Isn’t that a bad idea?」

Irina and Adele struck up conversation with me while the others were busy thinking.
Well, they had probably already seen all of my skills in action.
I doubted that showing them my stats and skills would make any difference.

「You want to see?」

「I’m definitely interested, but…」

「That’s alright, we’re fine.」

Adele looked over to Irina as if to ask for permission, but she was instantly shot down.
Adele put on a dissatisfied face.

Fiona and the others were doing their best to find any lead they could.

「I really have nothing in common with Keith when it comes to stats.」

「Yeah, me too.」

「What about skills?」

The whole room went back to silence.

Saki struck up a conversation.

「Keith, you have【Dual Wield】, huh.」

「Yeah, it became available to learn at some point, and I just took it.」

「You have a lot of production job skills… Was【Cooperation】there from the very beginning?」

「I’m not so sure, but yeah, I think so.」

Saki kept thinking.
Looked like she just figured something out.

「I have a theory.」

「What is it?」

「I think that the stat that controls when we can learn the new magic skills isn’t INT or SPI, but DEX.」

「But Saki… Fay, Helga, and Shinohara have higher DEX stats than you.」

「I think there’s also something else involved, namely,【Cooperation】.」

「I figured it out when I noticed that both Keith and me have【Dual Wield】」

「Huh? Really?」

「Yeah, we didn’t think of that…」

Fiona looked like she was deep in thought.

「Keep going.」

「I thought that【Dual Wield】was a skill that only production job players with high DEX stats could get, but now it looks like that’s not the case.」

「You’re saying that you got【Dual Wield】because of【Cooperation】?」

「And if Fay, Helga, and Shinohara don’t learn【Cooperation】, they won’t be able to learn the new magic skills?」

「…Not exactly.」

「Why’s that?」

「I think Keith became able to learn the new magic skills because of his stats, and the level of his【Cooperation】skill.」

「This is my theory. To learn for example…【Tree Magic】, you will need have【Water Magic】at Lv.4, 【Earth Magic】at Lv.4, and the total of your DEX stat and【Cooperation】level must be over 20.」

「Why DEX?」

「Because you need be dexterous to be able to fuse two skills together and use them effectively? I don’t know.」

The room went back to silence.
It didn’t look like the theory had any holes.

「I don’t see anything wrong with that theory…」

「In other words, players that don’t have【Cooperate】will have to raise their DEX stats all the way to 20 before they can learn new magic skills?」

「Sorry, could I have a minute?」

I wanted to confirm something.
Saki’s idea did seem plausible.
I turned to Fay.

「Fay. What spells do you use when you make glass bottles?」

「Uhh… 【Resist Fire】and【Physical Enchant: Aqua】…」

His eyes widened.

「【Physical Enchant: Aqua】! You think it would count even if we only temporarily raise our DEX values?」

「Let’s try it. Can you use【Physical Enchant: Aqua】to make your DEX stat reach 20?」

「Yeah! I’m just at 19 right now!」

Fiona looked over at Shinohara and Helga.

「I’ll try it.」

「I think it’ll work for me.」

Everyone exchanged glances.
It was well worth a try.

We had to try it.

The next group they encountered was a group of three Branch Golems.
I used【Physical Enchant: Aqua】on Fay, Helga, and Shinohara as they fought.
They took some damage during the fight, but managed to defeat the Branch Golems without any issues.

「I can learn【Lightning Magic】!」

「Me too! I can learn【Ice Magic】now! Looks like my DEX stat made it to exactly 20!」

「Might be unrelated, but I can learn【Dual Wield】too now.」

「Oh yeah, me too! Even though I’m a bow-user.」

「Ah, me too.」

Looked like all three of them got something out of it.

Helga learnt【Lightning Magic】, and Shinohara learnt【Ice Magic】.
Since Fay had a combination of fire and water, I had no idea what magic skill he was going to get.

「Fay, what magic skill did you get?」

「【Steam Magic】, apparently.」

「Can you learn it?」

「Yeah, I just barely had enough points for it.」

The debut for some brand-new magic spells was coming.

「It looks a little like this, Fiona.」

「Nice, I’ll send it to you Keith. Oh, and Adele and Irina too.」

I soon got a message from Fiona.
Let’s see…

Mist (Steam Magic)
Covers an area in a thick mist, making it difficult to see.

Acid Touch (Steam Magic)
Oxidises an object at close range. Can also be used on a target to deal slight damage.

Reduction Touch (Steam Magic)
Reduces an object at close range. Can also be used on a target to deal slight damage.

I didn’t know what to say.
How did fire and water combine to make spells that were essentially chemical reactions?

「Oh, that oxidation spell will be nice. It’ll be useful in making stained glass.」

Fay looked happy enough.
No, everyone was happy to get some new spells.

「Looked like we figured it out.」

「And you have a nice opportunity to try them out, too. Look, monsters.」

I saw some monsters coming our way.
It wasn’t a good place to stand and talk.

「Actually, let’s leave it to Keith.」

They’d already achieved their goal, they had no need to fight anymore.
I figured I could get some hunting in while I was at it.

《【Dark Magic】Level Up!》

After ripping a mushroom in two, my【Night Vision】spell ran out.
After recasting it on myself, a level-up happened.

We kept going along all the outer rooms.
It was the route we had to take in order to encounter the boss in the central hall.
We weren’t in any real hurry.
I had a good time fighting monsters.
They were strong, but I had even stronger Summon Monsters.

We took a short break in one of the rooms without any monsters.
I took the opportunity to update my forum post.
Well, to be honest, Fiona just told me exactly what to write.

「By the way, Keith, have you not been distributing your stat points?」

While Fiona was taking care of the forum post, Irina told me about stat distribution.
It was in the tutorial, but since I didn’t read that and just jumped straight in, I had no idea.

In short, it was possible to use Bonus Points to raise stat points.
As an example, suppose you had 15 points in DEX.
Using 15 Bonus Points, it would be possible to raise that stat to 16.
A little heavy, huh?
Well, small changes to the base stats really make a big difference.
But the more you do it, the more Bonus Points it will cost.

Taking the previous example, if you wanted to raise the DEX stat from 16 to 17, it would cost you 1.5 times as many Bonus Points, in other words, 24 points.
And to raise that 17 to 18, it would cost two times as many points, in other words, 34 points.
The pattern keeps going, with the multiplier going up by 0.5 every time you use bonus points to increase a stat.

It wasn’t very efficient.
But I was grateful to Irina for teaching me nonetheless.

「Well, it’s just kind of like you to not know that…」

Irina was trying to cheering me up.
Wait a minute.
Was she?

「Yeah, that’s so Keith.」

Fiona chimed in too.
I had a feeling she wasn’t trying to cheer me up.

「Yeah, that’s so you, Keith! You’re always super thorough in everything you do!」

Adele’s comment gave me a feeling of relief.

I didn’t even know why anymore.

After our little break we kept going.
Fiona told me to use【Fire Magic】as much as I could in the next battles.
The reason was simple.
There were still two other magic skills we didn’t know.

We switched positions, with me in the very front.
That wasn’t a bad thing.
I got some nice training out of it.
Fighting Branch Golems became a walk in the park with【Pyrokinesis】.
But it didn’t look like my【Fire Magic】was going to level up any time soon.

The time was 8:20 pm.
We were nearing the end of our trip.
At this rate, we could even fight the boss.

「Are we going to fight the boss?」

「While we’re here I figure we might as well. I don’t mind getting back by respawning either.」

「Then let’s prepare outside the central hall.」

「I think even we can beat that kind of boss with enough knowledge and a good strategy. There’s quite a few useful tricks here.」

A short lecture started.

The boss’s name was Plant Golem.
It had mushrooms growing along its outer layer, which could drop down to become Fungi monsters.
The mushrooms were easy to destroy with a weapon reinforced with【Enchant Weapon】.
Although it was possible to just take them all out at once using【Dispel Magic】.

In terms of attack spells, as expected, 【Fire Magic】spells were the most effective.
And as long as the tank of the group could take the boss’s hits, it would be an easy fight.
That was more or less their strategy.

I had some Recovery Pills on me.
Out of the eight I had on me, I gave four to each of the two groups.

「Oh! We didn’t bother buying any of these.」

「That would leave you with none! I can’t accept that!」

「It’ll go to waste if you don’t use it to fight this kind of monster.」

「I think you guys might need this.」

I placed them in Fiona’s hand and forced her to take them.
They were really apprehensive about the whole thing.
The more recovery methods, the better.

Without breaking the『Union』, we headed into the central hall.
I expected it to be forcibly broken when the boss appeared.
We kept walking.
Suddenly, everyone except for me disappeared.
The boss event was probably starting.
I picked a random spot to sit down and wait.

It had been about two minutes since Fiona and the others disappeared.
【Flashlight】ran out, so I recast it.

《【Light Magic】Level Up!》

It was like the game was making fun of me.
I wanted to raise【Fire Magic】, not【Light Magic】.
Well, I couldn’t expect things to always go my way.

Both my【Light Magic】and my【Dark Magic】were at Lv.4.

With fire, wind, water, and earth, I could get a hybrid skill of sorts when they reached Lv.4.

I wondered what was between light and dark.
I was kind of curious.

I walked around the room, peeking into the eight exits to the outer rooms.
Is anyone out there? Any monsters want to come fight me?
I realised I had no reason to just wait passively. I used【Called Monster】.
Three Branch Golems shuffled out of one of the exits.

Could it be…
Maybe I first had to…
I felt a strange excitement.

I left one to Jericho, one to Goki and Senki, and took on the last one on my own.
Of course, that was so I could use both【Light Magic】and【Dark Magic】to fight.
I prepared to cast a spell.
At the same time, I went in close and grabbed the Branch Golem.

「Confuse Blast!」

A direct hit at point blank range.
No status effects, but I wasn’t disappointed.
Its HP bar went down to 70%.
I prepared to use the next spell.

「Dark Stare!」

I released another spell at close range.
With this, the conditions should all be fulfilled.
I just had to defeat them all and end the encounter.

I threw it twice, and the golem disintegrated.
The other two Branch Golems were defeated a long time before mine.
My Summon Monsters were very efficient.

《A skill link has been established! You may now learn【Spacetime Magic】.》

The info screen I was hoping for appeared.
I was hoping for it, but the result was a little strange.
【Spacetime Magic】?
I wondered what kind of spells it would have.
It costed four points to learn.
I took it without any hesitation.

I quickly checked the spells.
What a strange name.

The spell list for【Spacetime Magic】appeared in another window.

Levitation(Spacetime Magic)
Telepathy(Spacetime Magic)
Return Home(Spacetime Magic)

Another three spells.
No attack spells.

【Levitation】let you, well, levitate.
But apparently, it was only enough to float a bit above the ground.

A spell used to communicate using the Whisper function to members of your friend list from far away.

Last was【Return Home】.
A spell used to return the user to the place where they last logged in.
It could be used on a whole party at the same time.

The last one sounded very useful.
No, all of them sounded useful, but【Return Home】had a special charm to it.
It felt a little overpowered.

《You have received some info from the GMs, do you wish to read it?》

What timing.
I looked at the subject line.

《Tournament Best Bout: The voting period has ended and the results have been announced!》

Best Bout, huh.
I felt like I heard that come up in a chat I had some time ago.
I couldn’t vote since I took part in the tournament, so I kind of forgot about it.
Let’s see…

1st Place Second Match ○Summoner vs ●Sorcerer
2nd Place Third Match ○Lumberjack vs ●Summoner
3rd Place Final Match ○Lumberjack vs ●Fighter
4th Place Second Match ○Fisherman vs ●Bard
5th Place Second Match ○Fighter vs ●Treasure Hunter

I saw a note at the bottom saying that they planned on publishing the video of the first-place winner, but they ultimately decided not to do it.
Instead, a video of the second-place winner’s match was published.

Probably the right decision.
They didn’t put down any specific reason, but I knew why the GMs were hesitant to show a video of the match.
Was it my fault?
And why wasn’t the final match the first-place winner…

I couldn’t understand the community’s way of thinking.

The boss fight kept going.
I knew they would message me if they lost, so at least I knew they were still doing well.
While I was waiting for them, two Rush Fungi came up to attack me, but I didn’t feel like getting up and just left it to Senki and Goki.

Fiona and the others suddenly appeared.
Adele and Irina were there too.
They looked pretty exhausted.

「We somehow managed to win without losing anybody, but I got hit by a status effect three times!」

Reina’s face was pale.
Fiona’s, Fay’s, and Adele’s HP bars weren’t looking too good.

「Well, for now, let’s just go to a room without monsters. I’ll take the lead.」

「Please do…」

Fiona’s voice was weak.
It reminded me of something…
It reminded me of when I fought the Snow Ape.
I took so much damage, I felt like I couldn’t even move.
The fatigue really made it impossible to fight.
Adele collapsed on top of Mii-chan and had her follow us.

The corridor felt a little longer than usual, but after fighting only one group of five Branch Golems, we arrived in the empty room on the other side.
Fiona and the others sat down and took a break as soon as they entered the room.

I passed out some potions while listening to them talk about the boss fight.
Apparently, there were two bosses.
They were two separate parties, so it was to be expected.

But what made the fight difficult was the fact that the two Plant Golems seemed to work together at times.
One of them stood in the front while the other stayed in the back and made the mushroom minions.
It sounded tough.

They were already exhausted after taking down the first one.
And they couldn’t find a gap to use【Dispel Magic】on the second one.
If they didn’t have a Wood Golem.
Or if they didn’t have any Recovery Pills.
Or if they didn’t have【Enchant Weapon】.
We would probably not be sitting in the room at that moment.

I had something to tell her too.
【Spacetime Magic】.
Everyone’s eyes widened at my story.

「【Return Home】sounds really useful!」

「Yeah, that’s a cheat-level useful skill.」

「【Light Magic】and【Dark Magic】, huh… I don’t know any players who have that combo.」

「I want it! But raising them both to Lv.4 is difficult…」

They had taken a lot of damage, but after sitting down for a while, we were all talking and laughing again.

「Saki, could you help Keith write that down in the forums?」

「Yeah, you rest for a bit, alright?」

Saki sat down next to me and we took care of the forum post.
I didn’t really know why, but our last post seemed to have gained a lot of traction.
Must’ve been due to Saki’s and Fiona’s help.

「Hey, Keith.」

「What’s up?」

「Posting this will definitely be like dropping a bomb. Are you really alright with standing out like this?」

「I already stand out as a bad guy, it’s a little too late to be worrying about that.」

「How carefree. I kind of envy you sometimes, Keith.」

I wrote a draft and had Saki look it over a few times before posting it.
It was a short post, but Saki was probably right in that it would be like dropping a bomb.

Well, as long as I didn’t look at the forums, I wouldn’t have to deal with the issue.

The time was a little after 9:00 pm.
We rested for a little longer than 10 minutes, and it looked like Fiona, Fay, and Adele could finally get up and walk around.
It was already late.
We had to get back to Legias as soon as possible.

「I’ll take the lead again.」

「Sorry, and thanks.」

I took the lead again and headed towards the exit.
We were on our way home, but we couldn’t get careless.
We encountered a group of seven Branch Golems in the hall with the exit to the western forest.
I used throws to take them all out without any problems.

We went through the green corridor and reached the forest without any issues.
I recalled Jericho and summoned Jean.
Just in case, I also recalled Senki and summoned Volff.
It would take about 30 minutes to get back to Legias. I wanted to be as prepared as possible for any surprise attacks.
Irina also recalled Goliath.
But it looked like she didn’t have the MP to summon another Summon Monster.
Oh well.

On the way back, we were attacked by Hunter Bats and Striped Raccoons.
Could they sense that we were at a weak point?
That would be interesting…
We made it through all the ambushes and arrived in Legias at a little after 10 pm.
Everyone was completely exhausted.
For various reasons.

「Good work, everyone…」

Nobody had the strength to reply to Fiona.

「I wanted to discuss everything we learnt today, but it looks like we’re all a little too tired for that. Why don’t we all meet up here again tomorrow?」

「We’ll have breakfast for everyone.」

「You too, Keith. Do show up if you can.」

「Alright, that’s all. Let’s go home.」

Everyone left to go to their respective inns.
There was something I wanted to test out on my own.

The spell【Return Home】.

I prepared to cast the spell.

「Return Home!」

Nothing happened.

《You are within a village. Please leave the village and try again.》

An info screen appeared in front of me.
Looked like the skill couldn’t be used anywhere.

I left Legias and tried using【Return Home】again.

「Return Home!」

My surroundings blurred and disappeared.
I could only see my Summon Monsters.
Some time passed and suddenly, I was in front of Master’s house.

Very useful.
My MP went down by just a little.
About the same as a Lv.3 attack spell.

I had a transport spell. Perfect.
I imagined how much more time I could spend exploring now that I had that spell.

The spell was a game-changer.
That much I knew.

I recalled all my Summon Monsters and entered the house.
I took off all of my equipment and got into bed.
I decided to leave arranging my inventory for the next day.
While thinking of that, I logged out.

  1. Thanks for the chapter I can only imagine how many waves he will leave on the forums.

  2. Most useful spell ever makes it’s appearance! Hurrah!

    Thanks for the chapter!

  3. Thanks for the chapter!

The only thing I can think of its how Keith will get a short hop teleport and will add it to his meele combos xD

  4. Every level in spacetime magic should count as a racial level for the purpose of item boxes.

  5. I’m wondering what will happens if he combines those composite spells into a super-composite spell (is it even a thing? lmao)

    • You can only get so far with elemental combinations (and imo Tree Magic is already kind of a stretch, but otherwise it would feel odd to have only Ice, Lightning, and Spacetime as advanced elements).

  6. Thanks for the new chapter!

  7. Ultimatecalibur

I think that the title “The Summoner is Going” isn’t the meaning the author intended. I think that “The Summoner Leads the Way” may be closer to the intended meaning of the “Summoner-san ga iku.”

    • That makes sense, but we hadn’t read that far ahead to find out about his OP nature. The synopsis kind of suggests “easygoing” too, since Keith just likes to go with the flow.

  8. Meant to say it in my past comment, but short term memory trumps all.

It’s about time the author gave definition to how the bonus points can be added to stat points. Ever since the mention of this mechanic it’s been in the back of my mind nagging at me. I can now rest easy knowing Keith wasn’t duped over by his negligence.

    • Only because of the scaling system lol.
It’s good when you have a stat dump and want to add a bit of security, but very costly when you’re trying to raise it all at once.
Also I wonder if it just rounds up if a 1.5x multiplier is applied to a stat with an odd number…

  9. Thanks for the treat.
