【Sam’s POV】

“Well, that sure was wild.”

Definitely not something I’d expect from a meeting with the King of a country.

“That was because we all worry for Cecile. I hope you can understand that.” Leilani smiled wryly.

“Of course, I do not fault you for that.” I nodded. “Though the Cecile you’re talking about almost eloped with Leige today.”

“That’s not my fault! In fact, it’s your fault for suddenly using a skill there.” Cecile harrumphed.

“Oh, and how was your date, Ms. Cecile?”

“Leige only fulfilled his duties as the Captain of the Zeroth Order of Knights. Nothing more, nothing less.”

“Did he now?”

I was originally shipping her with Solomon, but I guess a relationship with Leige wouldn’t be bad either. A princess falling in love with her knight who diligently protected her from all dangers is a classic; quite romantic, if I may say so myself.

“Haah, talking with you is useless.” She sighed.

Though what’s more interesting is that no one batted an eye even though the King’s bodyguard abandoned his post to evacuate the Third Princess, which implies that not only are they used to it, they also expected it.

Hmm, but what could be the reason for that? That Leige dotes on Cecile like his own daughter? Sounds too simplistic. What if Cecile is the real ruler behind the scenes? Now that would be interesting.

…That doesn’t sound too far-fetched, actually. Maybe I should look into it.

“Not to mention that Leige would be coming with us when we go back to the Duchy. Almost seems like he’s following you there.”

Usually, we would have stayed here and let the Heroes come back; the Imperial Capital is our base after all. But the Heroes decided to stay behind as they wanted to train in the dungeon. Of course, we killed all the monsters the last time we went there, but respawning monsters is one the dungeon’s many capabilities.

I was also told that the dungeon has a second floor, combined with a Boss and many stronger monsters, reserved exclusively for those who have passed the Trial. Of course, that’s what the Heroes are aiming for. They also hope to get the God class weapons.

“You are doing this on purpose, aren’t you?” Cecile scoffed. “If I’m to compare Sir Leige with anything, then he’d be like the friendly neighbourhood Uncle.”

“Really?”

“You still doubt me?”

“Kinda.”

“Please do not tease her too much, Samael.” Leilani interjected as Cecile frowned.

“You are right. My apologies, Leilani.”

“…You sure are acting chummy with my sister.” Cecile squinted.

“Hahahaha.” Leilani giggled. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to steal him.”

No, that’s what she isn’t worried about.

“Are we?” I tiled my head. “Well, you could call us comrades in arms.”

“Comrades in arms? How?”

“In that we enjoy the suffering of the same person.” Both me and Leilani glanced back at Lantz, who averted his eyes with a failed whistle.

Cecile also peeked at Lantz, and after some moments, understood what we were talking about.

“Of all things, you befriended each other over this?” She held her temple.

“I don’t see anything wrong with that.”

Experience tells me friendships can start from even the smallest things. I remember making a friend just because we wore striped shirts. It truly is a weird thing; I’m so old and I still don’t understand it clearly.

Well, whatever.

The meeting with the King had ended on a good note, though he did ask about my goals and why I had recruited Serasta La Graes, the former Dark Hero. It seems he was rather convinced with my answers, for the talk about cooperation and such progressed smoothly after that. Though he did tell me that Leige will be coming on an inspection of Serasta when we go back.

We- me, Lantz, Cecile and Leilani- soon arrived at the office we had stayed at earlier. Lantz opened the door, and Sarah hopped off from the sofa and trotted towards us.

The 4 feet brat looked up at me and spoke.

“So, how did the meeting with the King go?”

“It went well, I suppose.”

More importantly, can someone get this Satan off me, please? Gosh, and I’m supposed to be the Ruler of Hell. Goddamnit.

“So you’re now officially marrying Cecile?”

Waww.

“No. We’re not at that stage yet.” Cecile replied and went on to sit on the sofa, and Sarah followed her.

“What does that mean? Do you not love him?”

“I do, but we’re just friends.”

“Aww, that’s a shame.” Sarah looked at me with sad eyes. “And I thought you’d be a good match for Samael.”

Hmm, her wording was strange, wasn’t it? Yup, no matter how I look at it, Sarah the brat is full of flags. I need to stay the fuck away from her.

“Please do not tease her, Sarah.” Leilani put her hand over Sarah’s head. “They don’t plan to marry at all.”

Oh?

“…As I expected, I can’t hide anything from my sister, can I?” Cecile sighed.

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh?

“Of course. I’m your older sister after all.” Leilani winked.

Looks like her all-seeing eyes weren’t just my imagination.

“Since when have you known?”

“Hmm…” Leilani put her finger on her chin. “Since I saw you at the meeting?”

“And you didn’t say anything?” I asked.

“Why would I? If Cecile is doing something, she must have a reason to do so.” She shrugged.

“You trust her a lot, huh.”

“I’m her older sister after all.”

That makes sense, I guess.

“So you two aren’t marrying?” Sarah’s head drooped.

Why the hell is she the one who’s sad? Her disappointed figure looks just like a mother who was shipping her son with his friend.

“Oh?” Leilani smirked. “Why are you so sad? Is it because you wanted Lantz only to yourself?”

“Huh?”

“Lantz? Uweeaagh.” Sarah made some retching sounds.

“Oi, that’s rude.” Lantz grumbled.

Everyone laughed. Just then, the door slammed open.

Yup, of course, I knew this was going to happen. Enjoying a peaceful time with everyone? Pfft. What the fuck is that even supposed to mean?

Now, let’s see what bad news has come our way.

“Commander Lantz, my apologies for barging in unannounced, but this is an emergency.” The soldier saluted and said before he could be reprimanded.

“Speak.” Lantz also shifted into his Commander mode.

“A huge dragon is heading our way.”

“Then let the 3rd order deal with that.”

Hmm, if I remember correctly, the 3rd order was responsible for aerial combat.

“They tried, but the problem is that their attacks are not affecting the dragon at all.”

“What?” Lantz’ eyes narrowed. “Where is the dragon right now?”

“By now it should have entered the city.”

“What?!” Lantz stood up. “What are those guys doing, letting it past the walls?!”

“I-I do not-”

“Forget that! Inform Leige now. I’ll go deal with the dragon.”

“Yes sir!” The soldier saluted and left the room.

“You coming along?” Lantz turned to me.

“Sure, why not.”

I would be troubled in a lot of ways if Lantz somehow failed and this city was destroyed as a result. But what is a dragon doing here?

A dragon wouldn’t attack a city full of humans unless it had a clear reason to do so. So, what is that dragon after? Was it driven out of its territory and is now looking for a new place to reside? Or is it just passing by? Maybe it’s lusting after all the gold that can be found in the palace? Or perhaps…

Without further delay, we left the room, and for some reason the others were following as well.

“Is it alright to take them with us?”

Wouldn’t it be dangerous for the two Princesses to accompany us? Wouldn’t people question his fealty if something happened to them?

“Don’t worry, they’re capable of protecting themselves.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes, it is.”

Well, to each their own, I guess.

We soon arrived at a large balcony facing the city. The sun was high in the sky, and in front of it was the silhouette of a large dragon flapping its wings, heading towards us with tremendous speed.

“Give this to me.” Meanwhile, Lantz took a lance from a soldier on standby.

He lowered his posture and drew back his hand holding the lance. Mana flowed from his body and lightning crackled around the lance. Within some moments, the lance was exuding a tremendous aura.

As my eyes adjusted to the light, I could see that the dragon was red in colour, and there were… three people on its back. As I thought, this is a planned attack, and most likely, the riders are the ones responsible-

Hmm? Red?

Wait.

However, Lantz threw his lance before I could stop him. Within the blink of an eye, the lance travelled the distance between the palace and the dragon, leaving behind a trail of lightning.

The dragon simply rolled in the air to dodge it, and the lance passed by her. However, it turned around and started following the dragon (what is it, a homing missile?). The dragon noticed that but didn’t do anything.

“W-what is that?” Someone among us muttered.

Suddenly, dark clouds gathered in the sky. Lightning cackled and thunder boomed. The lance, true to its master’s orders, followed after the dragon with incredible speed.

However, just before it could hit the dragon, a large bolt of lightning fell down from the sky, lightning up the sky as if the sun had descended, and turning the lance into ashes.

“Hooh?” Lantz raised its eyebrows, seemingly intrigued.

But before he could do anything further-

“Stop it, Lantz. There’s no need for you to do anything.”

“Hmm? Then will you handle it?”

“Actually, there’s no need to handle them.”

“And that means?” Cecile raised her eyebrows.

“They are my comrades.”
