CHAPTER 217: KAPITALIA AGAIN
Ah, the lovely Kapitalia, how I wish I could look forward to your walls, but sadly I only feel annoyed when I see you and it is all thanks to your rulers. How unfortunate, because ultimately you are such a beautiful city.
“Naoko, that is an odd proposition, but I will allow it as long as you have an escort. Also it needs to be from our party, and you can’t leave just yet.”
“Agreed. I will take Mia with me properly, I promise.”
Finally, I am free. I decided to use up my remaining three weeks of freedom to roam freely around the city. Well somewhat freely, seeing as I will need to bring Mia along. Not that I wouldn’t have taken her with me in the first place.
Just the other day I got the answer to the invitation that I presented to her. She said she wants to be a trial member for a month first. If the conditions of the guild suit her and she finds herself being comfortable as part of Dragon’s Descent, she would agree and become a full member. This was a tough decision to make since I didn’t want to expose all secrets to her if she is only a temporary member, but just the mere chance of adding another S-rank adventurer to our ranks was too tempting.
Since I had my freedom to roam freely outside the castle I decided to gamble and agreed to her request. I am sure I would be able to sway her by showing her the guild’s workings as well as my trump card, the monster den. If my hunch is correct, she will be hooked and become one heck of a monster tamer.
“Mia, let’s go. Time for you to meet everyone at the Dragon’s Descent.”
I took her hand and led her away completely ignoring the warning Vitou gave me. I arrived at the headquarters and introduced her to Dogusu and told him to show her around. Once they were out of sight, I transferred to the underground base. This was a restricted area.
“““Honorable Boss, welcome back”””
I was greeted by a chorus of welcomes. I guess some things will never change no matter how hard you try to persuade them against it. I came here to check on research done to mana crystals and also a few different types of magic I had them working on. But first things first.
“Colt-san, what do you think of our little operation here?”
“Naoko-chan, you really have everything that you said you had. I must say I had some doubts about you, but once I arrived here, all of them disappeared. These here are all huge discoveries regarding magic. I heard the plan you had for the magic crystals and I can tell you with certainty that you will sweep the market completely.”
The main research on mana crystals is how to apply them in everyday life. According to my predictions within a year the first batch of shops will be opened and it will revolutionize the way people live in this world.
“I’m glad you like it. What is your take on our magic circle research?”
“I never thought you would turn back to primitive magic, but I can see it being quite useful in certain areas. I did look into it a bit, but it is way too complicated to me. I must do more studying on the topic to be able to provide more insight. Also, I was able to strengthen my Light and Water magic. Thanks to your book collections of theories behind elements the imagery and precision increased tremendously.”
Those book collections are something I originally planned on using to teach the kids for the raid team, but realized it could help all the members equally. It has an extremely simplified explanation of chemistry and physics behind each of the elements. I sent one copy to Kapitalia with everything summed up, but the members made a copy for each element separately and also added their own observations and conclusions. That is how a huge collection was made.
“I’m really glad you found good things here. I will leave you to your work. Did you happen to see Rio today?”
“He’s in his room.”
Rio was the member in charge of research division. He has some really weird ideas and often looks like he is in a daze or simply tripping on some weird stuff, but when he gets to work, he makes sure to finish it without fail. He is also a member that I personally recruited during one of my visits to Kapitalia after hearing about him from other craftsmen that I knew.
“Rio, I hope you’re not busy because I have a job for you.”
“Oh, Naoko-sama, welcome back. If you have an idea it must be something crazy. So what is it? Tell me, I’m excited.”
He was rubbing his hands expectedly. Right now he totally had a crazy scientist vibe around him.
“It will be tough since it is about Space magic. I want you to come up with a transfer gate, or transfer circle. Ideally one that has no distance limit, or at the very least a limit of hundred kilometers would be best.”
“Transfer gate? What would be the effect? If it is Space magic I assume you are talking about movement, but what kind?”
“Mass, long range, instantaneous teleportation. From my own experience it will most likely take up a huge amount of mana so implementing magic circles and mana crystals as fuel will be inevitable. Sadly, the information…”
We don’t have any information about space attributed magic circles. That was the biggest hurdle. The only thing we can do is blindly guess what shapes and runes go into making a space circle and hope for the best. I saw Rio going into a daze and gave up on talking to him. No matter what I say next, he won’t be able to hear it. I left him and returned to my mansion. Mia should have finished the tour by now.
I got back, but she was nowhere to be found. I decided to check on the finances, but even after two hours she did not back. I decided to look for her myself and found her and Dogusu at the monster den. She was being surrounded by countless monsters waiting for their turn to be petted. I knew that she was sold and would become a full member in no time.
“Dogusu, I think you know where to station her. She is an adventurer currently employed by Vitou so don’t give her too much work.”
“Honorable Boss, were you aware?”
“I had a hunch. We need to find more people like her, though I think it will be hard to do it. Also, I know you are already aware of this, but I don’t want to see any abuse of our monsters. Make sure they are well taken care of.”
“Yes ma’am!”
