Right after she received her instructions from Homura, Ayato turned their boat to the right in the direction of the industrial area, just as she was told, and they proceeded towards that direction until a large waterway appeared before them, most likely the one in the shopping district. It was filled not only with the street stalls but also the banners of various Communities flying high in the air at the top of many luxurious-looking buildings. Most of them bore the same design, so they probably belonged to a single, most influential community for the given district. Scanning the entirety of the shopping district with his eyes as they were going through it, Homura tried to count the flags the repeated the most.
(Looks like the most flags are the ones with the design of the six scars etched onto them. Six Scars, huh? If I remember correctly, the spirit train was also bearing a similar emblem.)
That was most likely the flag belonging to the Community of the Underwood’s landlords. The rest of the flags belonged to the Communities called Draco Greif and Underwood, and there was also a flag that had a girl in the red background as its emblem. Just from that Homura was able to understand that in Little Garden flags must have been something that was greatly respected. Even though they were hanging out in the open there was not a speck of dust or dirt on any of them, so they must have been cleaned and washed on a regular basis. Additionally, only the flags of the 4 Communities mentioned just now were hung higher than the rest, which indicated that they must be somewhat more important that the other Communities residing in the City of Water.
(Initially I thought it might have been done out of fear, but judging from the way the people in this city act and how peaceful and cheerful the atmosphere was, it must not be the case? So then, it’s done out of respect for them, maybe?)
Whoever he or she was, the person in charge of his city must be someone who is highly respected by the citizens if they were able to not only gather as big of an audience as they did for this game, but also convince those who were using the waterways for work and travel to free them up for the purpose of organizing this competition.
(Could it be that Big Bro Iza… no, of course not. That’s impossible.)
Homura shook his head to clean it of any such unreasonable thoughts and smiled wryly. Izayoi undoubtedly possessed great power and an unspeakable amount of talent, but he was definitely not someone suited for taking the responsibility for so many lives upon his shoulders. His goodwill would never be targeted towards the entire organization, because as someone who lived a very hedonistic lifestyle, he was someone who would rather approach individuals who were just like him, strong-minded and self-centered. So if he decided that Little Garden was a place worth for him to live in, then it must mean that he found many people whom he values in here.
(Well, even if that was the case, he is probably way too busy to introduce them to us, but that’s all right.)
But if the rest of his companions are the same as that Kuro Usagi and Shirayuki-hime, then the Community that housed such individuals… must be a really interesting place. And speaking of Shirayuki-hime… looks like she is enjoying this Gift Game very much.
「All right, playtime’s over now, we’re going for a sudden difficulty tweak! How do you like this?!」
As if they were waiting for her signal, water sprouts began to appear one after another in quick succession. There wasn’t enough of them to cover every inch of the waterway, but there was enough of them to cause them serious problems if they were to ram straight into one, so Ayato, although very reluctantly, had to reduced their speed in order to safely manuever between them. Seizing the opportunity, Shirayuki-hime darted forward, drastically reducing the distance between them.
「Yeah, right, in your dreams! Suzuka, now!」
「Aye aye, captain!」
(So, they are finally going to attack me, huh?)
Shirayuki-hime assumed a defensive stance in anticipation of the attack that should be coming towards her anytime soon. She doesn’t know what kind of Gifts those three possess, but if they were summoned to Little Garden, they have to be some exceptional ones. Maintaining an extra degree of caution, she wanted to put some more distance between them just to be on the safe side, but when she wanted to slow down, all of a sudden everything in front of her eyes was dyed with a shade of pink.
「Geh!????」
Momentarily robbed of her vision, she had no choice to to emerge from the water. She had no idea what happened and how did they managed to hit her, but whatever they did to her, it caused her to thrash her head around in pain. Thanks to that and the fact that they forced her to raised her head above the water’s surface, she had to wait before she could resume the chase. Homura and the others used that brief period of time to reclaim the advantage of distance they had lost.
「Nice going! The paint hit her right in the kisser! Now’s your chance, Aya! Do everything you can to make her smell the dust behind us!」
「Oh… o-okay, but Suzuka, the Gift you used just now, that was…!」
「Ah, right, you don’t know about that yet. Although it might look an awful lot like teleportation, it’s actually something a bit different than that. My Gift is Apport & Asport, and in comparison to your typical teleportation it’s something much more inconvenient to use effectively.」
Homura explained, sticking his head outside of the carriage again.
Throughout the years of its existence, Canaria Family Home orphanage focused on gathering the children who possessed “slightly special” abilities in its ranks. Or perhaps it will be more accurate to say that the orphanage was a perfect gathering place for the children who had no home to return to due to being shunned for possessing abilities that were outside of the range of understanding of normal humans. Most of them didn’t have some big or awesome abilities that could be called super powers from the get go, but among all the children to ever end up there, two of them were an exception to that general rule.
Sakamaki Izayoi and Ayazato Suzuka.
「Apport & Asport? So essentially the ability to push and pull objects to you and away from you? And you can do both of those things at once? I knew it, you really are amazing, Suzuka.」
「No, not really. Just like Homura said, this ability is chock full of inconveniences and restrictions. For example, I can only pull things towards me if they are in the straight line away from my right hand, and push the things away from me following the same straight line principle as with the right hand, as well as instantly transfer whatever is in my right hand to my left. I can also transport myself as much as I want, but that ability cannot be used at the same time as the other two.」
