CHAPTER 136: THE LONGING PART 1

There were many people watching us right about now, so we left the area with Ax for a moment, so as to not attract unnecessary attention to ourselves.

When we moved to the outskirts of the village, we stopped and resumed our conversation from before.

「So, what was that all about…… Getting you the Hero’s autograph?」

「Yes, that’s right! An autograph! Do you think that you will be able to get it for me!?」

「I’m sorry. I’m afraid that it won’t happen. Or rather, it’s going to be impossible.」

I mean, since Ax was the one who was asking for it, I might have as well tried to get it for him……

But since I would be the one asking him for it, there was a huge probability that Arios would simply deny my request.

「I could go and ask him for it, but he would probably turn me down on the spot…… For you see, we don’t actually get along all that well. Or rather, we actually hate one another’s guts.」

「Oh man, seriously……」’

Ax’s shoulders slumped and he looked really disappointed.

I can see that his admiration for Arios, or rather the Hero, was really strong, so it was actually understandable that he would react in such a way.

「If you want Arios’s autograph so badly, then why don’t you go and get it from him yourself?」

「I-I can’t do that! I mean, he’s the Hero! If I were to just go and talk to him completely out of the blue like that, I would only end up embarrassing myself!」

「What are you, a maiden in love or something?」

Just like Cell mentioned before, I could see that Ax was one hell of a pain in the ass to deal with.

Seeing the scene unfold, Cell let out a sigh.

「I’m really sorry for this. It seems that Ax said something stupid again and put you all on the spot because of that. But don’t worry. I’ll make sure to train him properly later to make sure that something like that doesn’t happen again.」

「Hey, hey, disciplining the man you love, hm? Cell, I didn’t know that you could be such a little perv. But it’s okay, I really like that! But if you say something like that to me, this is only going to make me all hot and bothered and GUBUEAH!?」

Once again, Ax’s head has been hit with Cell’s bow.

Is it just me, or does this man have some very strange idea what the term “discipline” means?

「But still, why is it that you adore the Hero so much?」

Kanade asked Ax that question curiously.

「…… Hm? Why? I mean, he’s a Hero, you know? THE Hero, you know? I have heard that he has been on all sorts of adventures and managed to overcome various hardships throughout his journey…… Oh yes, I have heard that he even managed to take down the Demon Lord’s Four Heavenly Kings fairly recently! So, when you hear about the Hero’s brave exploits like that, doesn’t that light that fire inside of you? Doesn’t that make you want to be just like him?」

「Even though the guy might be rotten to his core on the inside?」

「No way, that’s not true. He’s the Hero! So he must be a truly virtuous and upright person!」

「Nyaah…… I know that they say that love makes people blind, but that’s going a little bit overboard.」

Although Kanade was looking at Ax rather dubiously just now……

In all honesty, Ax’s reaction was a fairly common one.

On paper, he was fighting various monsters and demons on a daily basis while on his journey to destroy the Demon Lord.

That’s the general public’s image and opinion of the Hero.

Not many people out there would have met him in person, so they wouldn’t know what kind of personality he had, what he says and does on a daily basis.

As a result, his image would slowly become more and more beautiful and exaggerated over time……

For some people out there, it was true that they would adore him like some sort of idol.

Ax here was a perfect example of such a person.

So if he just so happened to talk to the person that he adored so much and would see how he was really like, his perfect image of the Hero might actually shatter into a million pieces.

But then again, there is always a chance that something like that would not actually end up happening.

And since it was Ax’s problem and no one else’s, I was not going to dictate him what to do.

「…… What do you admire so much about Arios as a Hero, Ax? Can you perhaps give us some more specifics? If you don’t mind, that is?」

I didn’t mean to interject here, but I was really curious about that one, so I posed such a question to Ax.

「Hmm, let’s see…… Well, it is true that I have always admired the Heroes because of the various tales about their brave exploits, but…… Yes, for me, the main factor would be that I have happened to meet the Hero once before. Or no, meet is too strong of a word for that. I was able to see him in person, but we didn’t really talk. And that was the reason why we were able to meet in the first place.」

「And what’s that supposed to mean?」

「It happened a long time ago…… It was when I had just become an Adventurer. I didn’t even know Cell at the time and I was on my own. But I’m a little embarrassed to say this, but at the time I thought that I was an incredibly talented guy who really believed that I could do pretty much everything on my own. So naturally, I ended up being quite reckless because of it.」

「Just for the record, you are still as obnoxious now as you were back then.」

「Would it really hurt you if you did not hold that comment to yourself?」

「Nyaah, Ax and Cell, you two are in perfect sync, as always.」

「Please stop that. I don’t like the way you’re looking at me with those eyes of yours just now.」

「No, I get it. It’s all on me. I should be the one who should reflect on my current behavior……」

Right about now, Ax looked about ready to break into tears at any moment.

As for Cell, she was still as expressionless as ever.

What an interesting duo the two of them make……

「But anyways, we are getting way off track here. Where was I…… Oh yeah, that’s right. At the time, I was in a hurry to become strong and famous, and I was always being quite reckless because of that. Naturally, that bill of arrogance was soon to be paid in full, and I have managed to find myself in quite a bit of a tight spot because of that.」

「Meaning you ran head first into the monsters’ nest all by yourself and got cornered by them in the matter of seconds.」
