CHAPTER 139: THE CONSPIRACY PART 1

Hearing that, everyone was utterly speechless.

Did Arios really kill that man?

But why? Why on earth would he even do that?

All of a sudden, my mind was so confused that I have found myself unable to formulate my thoughts into words properly.

Everyone else seemed to be that way as well…… Aside from Ax, that is. Because he seemed to be rather upset with that sudden revelation.

「…… Can you tell us anything more about it?」

I asked Sora and Luna, trying my best to stay calm in this situation.

Because no matter what, what we needed the most right now was information.

「Even though you ask us for details, this…… this might prove to be really difficult to do.」

「It’s been quite a long while since that man passed away, so only fragments of his soul…… fragments of his memories remain in his body. It’s not like we are able to clearly see through all of his memories.」

「That’s fine with me. Just tell us. Tell us anything else that you are able to see.」

「U-Umu. I understand.」

Just like that, Sora and Luna began to talk about the scenes that they were able to see inside of the dead man’s memories.

That man was an Adventurer, and he was hired by Arios and his Party to work as a guide for them as they trekked through those mountains.

Together with Arios and his Party, they climbed on top of this very mountain.

The person who actually destroyed the shrine was none other than Arios…… and there was no way to think otherwise.

Then, when the shrine was destroyed, something went horribly wrong and it was just…… for some reason Arios cut the Adventurer down where he stood.

「…… These are the memories of this dead person that Sora and I saw just now.」

「And believe me, this is not a lie. These memories are all true.」
「……………」

When Sora and Luna were done, I was actually speechless.

I really did not want to be suspicious of someone I used to call comrade for committing such heinous crimes, but……

But I also could not help myself to think that way, because just as Sora and Luna said, the memories of that dead man were all true.

But still, out of all the heinous crimes to commit, the fact that Arios just murdered someone in cold blood like that……

Why would someone regarded as a Hero even do such a thing in the first place?

I would try to be a little bit understanding if the one they hired as their guide was a bandit or a convicted criminal, but that person was an Adventurer, just like us right now.

Or…… Could it be that this Adventurer did something that Arios and his Party deemed as problematic?

And even if he indeed did something like that, was it really something that would justify killing him on the spot like that?

Does the shrine itself have anything to do with the reason for his death?

According to Sora and Luna, the shrine was destroyed by Arios himself.

I don’t know why he would actually do something like that, but……

Could it be that this Adventurer blamed him for something related to that matter and he got on Arios’s bad side because of it?

Then, as a result of that, Arios drew his sword at the man in the fit of rage and…… Wait, no. That’s not good.

What I am doing here now is just guessing, that’s not even something that can be called a genuine deduction.

I know exactly why I’m thinking like that here. It’s because I am currently confused because I was presented with some facts that I completely did not expect.

We need to cool our heads off here, first and foremost, before doing anything else.

「T-That’s bullshit! There’s no way that something like this could possibly be true!」

Moments later, Ax shouted out loud in an angry tone, presumably regaining his composure enough to speak up.

His fit of rage here was understandable. After all, there was no way that he was just going to accept the fact that his beloved and respected Hero actually killed someone in cold blood.

He then walked towards Sora and Luna, grabbing them by the arms and shouting at them once again.

「This has to be a mistake of some kind! There’s no way that this is true! There is just no way in hell!」

「Sora and Luna delved into the memories of that dead Adventurer, did you already forget about that fact? Sure, those memories were all fragmentary at best, so we don’t know the full extent of the whole story…… But it’s still the undeniable truth that this man was cut down by the Hero himself.」

「Ax, I understand that you respect the Hero quite a lot, right? That’s actually really weird, but you do you, I guess. Well, that’s all well and good to respect someone, but it’s a fact that he committed murder, as hard as it may be for you to accept. And believe me, we would never stoop so low as to lie about things like that.」

「B-But that’s…… That is exactly why this has to be some sort of mistake! Maybe your magic was cast wrong, or the spell itself twisted the guy’s memories! This has to be it!」

「Unfortunately for you, that is not the case here. For you see, Sora and Luna are experts when it comes to all things Magic-related. We can use our spells in a calm and composed matter, and under these circumstances, there’s no way that we are going to make a mistake.」

「Yes, not even a chance of our magic being a miss.」

「Kuh……!!」

Both Sora and Luna denied Ax’s words in a tone that would not tolerate any further talk-back.

Witnessing that attitude of theirs, it was something that made Ax flinch on the spot.

「That’s preposterous…… There’s no way that this can be true……」

It seemed that it was really difficult for Ax to be able to just accept Sora and Luna’s words as truth.

Ax looked confused and was mumbling to himself for a moment out there……

It was then that Cell gently tapped onto her partner’s shoulder.

「Ax.」

「Cell……」

「Calm the hell down.」

「GUAAAGHAAH!?」

「「「HUH!!!???」」」

While saying those words in a pretty nonchalant tone and with an expressionless mask on her face, Cell struck Ax right to the face.

「N-Nyah!? What the hell, nya!?」

「J-Just now, did you just hit him straight to the face without holding anything back!?」

「C-Cell!? What the hell!? What gives!? Why did you hit me like that……!?」

「It seemed to me like you were only going to lose your cool more and more. So I did that to bring you back to your senses a little bit, you know?」

To Luna, who asked her a question with a rather frightened expression on her face, Cell returned an answer in her usual tone and without any kind of hesitation.
