CHAPTER 178: THOSE WHO HIDE INSIDE OF THE RUINS PART 1

After the battle was over, we all got back on Tanya’s back again and we let her fly through the air.

Then we rushed forward a little bit faster than before, since we were now in a serious hurry……

The ruins to the east that the villagers had told us about were now in our sights.

However, it seemed that the main Strike Force had already arrived at that location and that they managed to make encampment tents all over the ruins, as if they were trying to surround them that way.

And since we couldn’t really allow ourselves to be spotted by them, we decided to go around the encampment and land a little bit further away, in the small gap between the forest and the ruins themselves.

「Alright, what do we do now?」

Tanya asked that question after landing and changing back into her human form.

「Normally I would like to run some reconnaissance into the round first, but I guess that in our current situation we don’t really have time for that, right?」

From when we were still approaching through the sky, we could see that the main Strike Force had almost finished setting up their tents for the camp.

So that would mean that they were almost ready to go with their own attack strategy. That was the assumption that we had to work with here.

「Sora, Luna. Do you have any idea where Iris is? Can you try to locate her?」

「Leave it to us!」

「We were just waiting for the opportunity to prove ourselves some more!」

Sora and Luna closed their eyes and concentrated.

Just like that, they murmured their incantations and used their area search magic……

Sora then tilted her head slightly, and Luna cocked her head in apparent confusion.

「Hmm, that’s strange…… There’s no response at all coming from the ruins.」

「So, does that mean that Iris is no longer in the ruins……?」

「Hmm, I wouldn’t be so sure about that. We can detect everything that surrounds the ruins themselves, but as for the ruins themselves, we get nothing. Nothing at all.」

「It might just be that the ruins themselves were made to be impervious to magic of any kind. We cannot dismiss that possibility.」

「Or maybe there is some mechanism inside of them that seals up all forms of magic in their vicinity…… But either way, it’s a really sticky situation. Because unless we go into the ruins themselves, we have no idea what to expect or who’s inside.」

「Does that also mean that you won’t be able to use magic inside of the ruins?」

「Hmm…… It’s a possibility, I’m not going to lie.」

So the problem here is that we don’t know what’s going on inside of the ruins, but……

More than that, the fact that we might not be able to use magic at all will be even greater of a hurdle for us to overcome in the near future.

So even if Iris was inside of the ruins and waiting for us, we wouldn’t be able to seal her away right away, at least not without taking her out of the ruins first.

We would have to find a way to lure her out of her safe hiding spot.

Honestly, it was quite cumbersome and difficult of a task for us to execute.

But still, there was no way that we could just give up here and run away with our tails between our legs.

「For the time being, will you stay behind right here, Sora and Luna? Since we don’t know what might happen when we step into those ruins, I want you to be on standby to seal Iris away at a moment’s notice.」

「I understand.」

「Roger that!」

「Nina and Tina will stay here as well. I want you to support Sora and Luna in case of emergency…… Or if anyone tries to come through here, just make them POLITELY turn back.」

「I will…… do my best.」

「We’ll take care of it.」

「Hey, hey, Rein! What about us?」

Kanade tugged at the edge of my clothes with an energetic enthusiasm.

「Would you like us to go into the ruins with you, Rein?」

「No, we are going to do it differently. It might be a little bit risky, but there is something that I would like the two of you to do for me.」

「Hmm, and what is that?」

Tanya doesn’t seem to be the least bit intimidated by being told that she would be stuck in a potentially dangerous situation.

Rather, she seemed to be somewhat happy with it.

If I had to take a wild guess here……

I was sure that she was happy to be trusted with dangerous task like that.

She surely thought that being entrusted with something dangerous was the sign of utmost trust on my part.

「I need you to make the main Strike Force occupied for a while.」

「So, you want me to create a diversion for you?」

「Yes, that is precisely what I want you to do. If we leave them as they are right now, the Strike Force is sure to march right into the ruins sooner rather than later. That is why I want you to slow them down as much as possible, so that they won’t get in our way.」

「Hmm, I see…… Alright, I understand.」

「Just don’t push yourself too hard out there, okay?　Tanya will change into her dragon form and Kanade will ride on her back…… Like this, create just enough chaos to stir them into action while staying relatively safe in the sky. But should you decide it’s too dangerous, don’t push yourself, and just retreat immediately.」

「Oh my. Are you that concerned about our safety?」

「Our opponents here are an elite group of Adventurers gathered specifically to take down Iris. We can’t underestimate them, no matter what. Besides, we can’t afford to put the two of you in harm’s way.」

「Does that mean that you are REALLY worried about us?」

「Of course.」

「I-I see…… Well, if you are THIS worried about us, I guess we have no other choice but to listen to your instructions and do as you say, right?」

Tanya’s cheeks tinted a bit in crimson shade and she said something as if she couldn’t bring herself to be honest with her own feelings right about now.」

However, her tail was wagging from left to right, just like a dog that was just reunited with their owner.

「Nyaah…… So, does that mean that you are going into the ruins all alone, Rein? Will you be okay? Won’t you get lost?」

「Yes, I will be fine. And I promise that I am not going to do anything reckless.」

「「「That sounded mighty suspicious.」」」

For some reason, everyone was looking at me with eyes filled with doubts.

「You mustn’t do anything rash, Rein! It’s a promise!」

「If you are going to be reckless yet again, I am going to burn you to cinders with my Dragon Breath, you hear me!?」
