CHAPTER 37: THE HERO’S LINEAGE AND WHAT TO DO FROM NOW ON PART 2

「Oh, I see, I see, nya…… So that’s how it works, huh?」

「So, does that mean that when we were fighting those guys earlier that chump was not yet awakened? Is that it?」

「The current Arios is still only as powerful as a normal Adventurer, I would say. Otherwise, if he was truly awakened as the Hero, I don’t think we would be able to win.」

It was then that Sora raised her hand.

「If Rein was to make contracts with even more and more Ultimate Species, he would only become more and more powerful, right? So maybe…… Maybe he would one day grow so strong for him to be able to go against even the Demon Lord himself?」

「Huh?」

「If that was to happen, we wouldn’t have to rely on a phony Hero like that jerk from before! Don’t think it would be a good idea if Rein defeated the Demon Lord!?」

「Huh? Don’t be ridiculous! Such a far-fetched story……」

「Hey, that’s actually not all that bad of an idea. I like it!」

「Luna?」

All of them should have just laughed that idea off as something incomprehensible and impossible, but strangely enough, Luna seemed to be on board with this idea.

But it was not only Luna.

Contrary to their previous words, both Sora and Tanya looked as if they thought that this was actually not all that bad of an idea, and they did not dismiss Kanade’s proposition right away.

「Are you against that idea, Rein? Don’t you want to fight against the Demon Lord?」

「T-This is……」

Fighting the Demon Lord.

I will fight any opponent out there, if it is to bring peace to the entire world.

When I was still in the Hero’s Party before, that was the goal towards which I was striving so hard all this time.

We fought day in and day out, trying to win peace for everyone with our own hands.

But then I was banished from the Hero’s party.

I also lost sight of what I needed to do and my purpose was gone just like that.

Now I’m just going through my days, just drifting along the tide.

Kanade and Tanya.

Sora and Luna.

I’ve met some of my most important friends thanks to that, but……

Beyond that, I’m still unable to find my real ‘purpose’.

What do I want to do?

What can I do?

「Unyaah…… I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking about how you might feel about that at all, Rein……」

Kanade slumped her head, and I gently patted her on it as if to tell her that she had nothing to worry about.

And certainly, her face brightened up in a matter of moments.

「To be perfectly honest……」

It was a brief but collected thought.

I put the feelings inside me into words.

「If I can really do what Kanade says she thinks I am capable of…… If I really can have a shot at defeating the Demon Lord myself…… I would really like to try doing just that.」

What comes to my mind is the scene of my once destroyed hometown.

Everyone in the village was dead, their houses burned down, everything disappeared in a matter of seconds……

As long as there is aDemon Lord, the same thing will be repeated in many other places around the world.
